Role and salary
The selected ESR will work in a young enthusiastic research team focusing on RNA biology. Our research goal is to understand the molecular mechnisms of non-coding RNAs and unveil their role in normal brain and diseases. We are especially interested on epileptogenesis and drug-refractory epilepsy. Most of the research is done in experimental laboratory models. However, we also examine tissue from patients as we work in collaboration with the Kuopio University Hospital and Veterinary Teaching Hospital (Helsinki). In our studies we apply together with our collaborators various methods that range from classical immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization, molecular profile analysis (next generation sequencing, proteomics), RNA techniques (PCR, RNA manipulation) to bioinformatics, behavioural analysis and magnetic resonance imaging.
The position in the Doctoral Programme of Molecular Medicine (DPMM) is offered for the research topic of Non-coding RNAs: Mechanisms and therapeutic strategies for epilepsy. The main duty of the ESR is to complete a doctoral dissertation in accordance with the research proposal written in the beginning of the employment period. We are looking for a motivated candidate to work on a unique project that identifies and characterizes novel molecular mechanisms of non-coding RNAs and investigates their role during epileptogenesis. The candidate will have possibility to unveil fundamental aspects non-coding RNA and discover new treatment strategies to prevent or halt epileptogenesis and drug-refractoriness. There is also a possibility to assess biomarkers at different stages of the disease. The academic profile of the candidate should be in the molecular biology area, with the idea of complementing this background throughout PhD studies. The selected ESR will work in the Neuroinflammation research group the goal of which is to understand inflammatory cell functions, especially those of microglia and astrocytes and mechanisms and mediators of inflammatory reactions in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease. We use interdisciplinary approaches to find novel targets for modulation of neuroinflammation for disease benefit. We aim to form a functional fingerprint of microglia-neuron crosstalk in health and disease. We use novel, human-based models and develop new human iPSC-based models including microglia and immunocompetent organoids and use living human brain biopsies. We welcome highly motivated candidate to characterize the impact of Aβ and/or Tau pathology on cellular functions. You will be working with human-based in vitro models, state-of-the-art technologies to measure neuronal functionality, clinical data and/or transcriptomic and single cell sequencing data analysis. The entire study is carried out using human samples and data. You will join a very active and well-equipped group of neuroscientists studying various aspects of neuronal function and neuroinflammation in the context of different neurological diseases. The goal of the ‘Neurobiology of Disease’ research group is to provide in-depth understanding of the cellular and molecular events that occur in brain disorders. By using human biosamples we aim to discover biomarkers for mental health dysfunction in order to provide novel solutions for patient benefit. Biomarker discovery is facilitated by using highly sophisticated, integrative omics approaches. Validation and detailed testing is carried out in human cells, and animal disease models. We are increasingly interested in deciphering how environmental factors shape the brain and affect mental health.
EXPECTED PROFILE OF THE PHD CANDIDATE This research project needs the participation of people with passion for excellence in research, innovation, and societal impact. We are looking for candidates who seek to contribute to brain health innovation research with a keen eye on the application of research knowledge to the problems and challenges of society and industry. We are looking for a motivated candidate to work on a highly novel project that identifies, validates and characterizes new omic biomarkers for childhood and adolescence mental illness using human-based biosamples and animal models of neuropsychiatric disorders. You will be working with biosamples and omics data from children and adolescents that are at high risk of a mental health disorder, or that already have a diagnosis. If you wish, you may also join our animal studies on neuropsychiatric disease. You will join a very active and multidisciplinary, European-wide team of scientists (funded by Horizon 2020, project Equal-Life) studying various aspects of the exposome in relation to mental health. DESCRIPTION OF THE NEURO-INNOVATION RESEARCH TOPIC Adolescence is a crucial period for developing and maintaining social and emotional habits important for mental well-being. Some adolescents are at greater risk of mental health conditions due to their living conditions, lifestyle, genetic factors, and the environment they are exposed to. The goal of this research is to demonstrate proof of concept in being able to utilize newly discovered biomarkers for the early detection and risk stratification of mental dysfunction, especially targeting adolescents. This project will determine the utility and validity of novel biomarkers discovered by multiomic approaches for early identification of at-risk individuals and possible preventative measures. Additional functional data on the biomarkers will be generated with human biosamples and highly translational research models. The project also combines the biomarkers data on the living conditions of the adolescents. A key aspect of this project is to determine if the biomarkers have utility for risk prediction and commercialization potential. This project strives to meet the challenging outstanding medical need of early identification of mental health dysfunction in adolescence.

INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION The academic partner organizations (see the Neuro-Innovation webpage) will collaborate closely with us in PhD training and students are strongly encouraged to include a secondment and visits with these partners in their studies. During shorter visits (1-4 weeks), you will learn more about research and methods and build international networks. During secondments, you will work on their research project under the supervision of the co-supervisor from the hosting organisation and utilise their infrastructure. You can also attend courses, seminars, and other events in the host organisations.
The PhD candidate has the opportunity to visit one or two project partners for secondments, for example the University of Verona and BioTalentum Ltd, for a period that will be jointly agreed. This will enable the candidate to become familiar with the state-of-the-art methodologies in human biosampling and bioinformatics and gain knowledge in working in industrial settings.

The objective of the proposed research is to advance our understanding of mechanisms of mental health dysfunction and discover and validate biomarkers to serve both diagnostic and potential therapeutic purposes. In the long run, the data from this study can be used to categorize individuals to risk groups, aid in early detection of potential mental health problems, leading to lowering of the disease burden.

As our new Postdoctoral or Project Researcher in Biomedical NMR, you will be working in the A.I. Virtanen Institute at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Kuopio Campus.
The Metabolic MRI group at the University of Eastern Finland is aiming to develop hyperpolarisation-based methods for metabolic magnetic resonance imaging. The applicant will be working in a neuroimaging project, aimed to image stroke and other neurological models at high (3T) and low (0.6T) magnetic fields. The project will improve the understanding of the metabolism of hyperpolarised marker molecules (e.g. pyruvate) during stroke and help establish the experimental basis for further development of hyperpolarized low-field MRI. The researcher will join a group currently including 2 PhD students and the Research Director. In addition to collaborations within Finland, the project involves collaborations with research groups in Denmark and Italy.

The Faculty of Health Sciences operates at the Kuopio Campus of the University of Eastern Finland. The Faculty offers education in medicine, dentistry, nutrition and pharmacy, as well as in some other central fields of the health care sector. The Faculty is research-intensive, and its internationally recognised research activities are closely linked to the strategic research areas of the University.
