Postdoctoral Researcher, Population Genomics

A three-year Postdoctoral Researcher position in Population Genomics is available in the Ant Genomics and Immunity group (https://lumiviljakainen.wordpress.com/).

In this project, funded by the Academy of Finland, we will study genetic underpinnings of convergent evolution of multi-queen colonies (polygyny) in ants. We will investigate genomic architecture and selection across the genomes of monogynous and polygynous ant species using whole-genome sequencing. In addition, immune gene evolution will be studied in these ant societies to decipher whether polygynous lineages have followed similar evolutionary trajectories after convergent evolution.

Open position

  • the main duties of the successful candidate are bioinformatics and population genomic analysis of whole-genome sequence data of several ant species and dissemination of research findings
  • other tasks include supervision of Ph.D. and M.Sc. students

Qualification requirements:

  • Ph.D. in biology, obtained less than 10 years ago
  • Experience in population genetics, high-throughput sequence data and bioinformatics
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team, and supervise graduate and undergraduate students
  • Fluency in both written and spoken English

Salary

A salary in accordance with the Finnish universities salary system (for teaching and research personnel): level 5. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50% of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 3500€ per month. A trial period of six months is applied in the position.

Erikoistutkijan ma. tehtävä: mikrobiomitutkimuksen bioinformatiikka

Turun yliopiston Tietotekniikan laitos hakee erikoistutkijaa määräaikaiseen tehtävään mikrobiomitutkimuksen bioinformatiikan alalle 1.9.2021-28.2.2025. Hankkeessa kehitetään ja sovelletaan uusia bioinformatiikan menetelmiä ajankohtaiseen mikrobiekologian ja metagenomiikan tutkimukseen osana kansainvälistä yhteistyöverkostoa. Tutkimustyön lisäksi työtehtävät voivat sisältää muita tehtäviä, kuten hankkeen koordinointia, kurssien ja tapahtumien järjestämistä, opinnäytetöiden ohjausta ja muuta opetusta. Työ tehdään apulaisprofessori Leo Lahden tutkimusryhmässä Tietotekniikan laitoksella.

Odotamme itsenäisyyttä, analyyttisiä valmiuksia, erinomaista opintomenestystä, yhteistyökykyä, ja motivaatiota työskennellä monitieteisessä ympäristössä. Sopiva hakija on juuri valmistunut tai viimeistelemässä tohtorintutkintoa soveltuvalta alalta ja omaa julkaisuin osoitettua näyttöä alan menetelmien ja tutkimuskysymysten hallinnasta. Kokemus yritysyhteistyöstä katsotaan eduksi. Sujuva suomen ja englannin kielen taito ovat välttämättömiä.

Erikoistutkijan tehtävään otettavalta edellytetään tohtorin tutkintoa ja kykyä itsenäiseen tieteelliseen työhön. Tehtävärakenteen toiselle portaalle sijoittuvaan erikoistutkijan tehtävään voidaan ottaa myös ylemmän korkeakoulututkinnon suorittanut henkilö, jolla on erityisen hyvä käytännöllinen perehtyneisyys tehtäväalaan.

Erikoistutkijan palkkaus määräytyy yliopistojen palkkausjärjestelmän opetus- ja tutkimushenkilöstön vaativuustasokartan tasojen 4-6 mukaisesti, jossa tehtäväkohtainen palkanosa on 2591,28–3498,98 euroa kuukaudessa. Lisäksi tehtävässä maksetaan henkilökohtaiseen suoriutumiseen perustuvaa palkanosaa, joka on 6% – 50% tehtäväkohtaisesta palkasta.

Tehtävässä on kuuden (6) kuukauden koeaika.

Job Description

In this position you will be part of the Bioinformatics R&D team, and will also work closely with our Clinical Bioinformatics, Software Development, Data Science and IT Operations teams. You work as part of a team of domain experts combining independent tasks and teamwork. You are fully comfortable with modern software development process and share the common practices and responsibilities with the rest of the team.

Your main tasks will include:

  • Combining your NGS data-analysis and programming skills to further develop and maintain our state-of-the-art analysis pipelines and tools, leveraging the power of workflow management frameworks in the cloud
  • Facilitating the adoption of cutting-edge bioinformatics methods and data sources into NGS analyses in a clinical diagnostics setting
  • The evaluation and development of NGS methods
  • Participating in our scientific projects and helping to ensure that our clinical bioinformatics production efficiently utilises state-of-the-art methods and technologies
