Job description 

We are seeking a Patent Counsel to help build and manage robust patent portfolios for Orion Corporation’s expanding pipeline in the pharmaceuticals industry. The ideal candidate brings deep knowledge of chemistry or biotechnology and experience in (bio)pharmaceutical R&D. You combine outstanding professional competence with agility and you thrive both as an individual contributor and as a collaborative team player. 

Your key responsibilities 

  • Identify and draft patent applications on pharmaceutical inventions in close interaction with inventors 
  • Prosecute and defend patents in opposition proceedings in all major jurisdictions. 
  • Manage patent portfolios in a time- and cost-efficient manner 
  • Conduct freedom-to-operate (FTO) risk assessments and landscape evaluations for both innovative portfolio as well as our generic portfolio development purposes and monitor patent filing activities of competitors 
  • Advise R&D and broader in house stakeholders on patenting strategy, FTO and risk mitigation 
  • Provide expert patent opinions and evaluations to stakeholders and senior leadership, particularly in the context of external asset evaluations and strategic decision-making 
  • Contribute to the further development of the IPR processes in the Company 

You will work closely with R&D and business teams and coordinate with external IP partners to execute our tasks according to the strategy. Your expertise will play an important role in shaping and implementing decisions that support Orion’s innovation pipeline and business goals. The responsibily area of the role will be defined in alignment with your skills and capabilities. 

This is a full-time and permanent position located in Espoo, and we also support hybrid working model. This position reports to Director Intellectual Property Rights.

Our expectations 

  • Diploma or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Pharma, or (Molecular) Biology 
  • Hands on experience with biopharmaceutical technologies and/or drug discovery and development 
  • European Patent Attorney qualification (part/full) is considered as an advantage 
  • Several years’ proven experience in pharmaceutical patenting (at least in EU and US), gained in-house or private practice 
  • Strong analytical mindset and attention to details. You have proven ability to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple tasks efficiently 
  • Highly motivated, collaborative working style with excellent communication skills (English being the main working language) 
  • Ability to simplify complex scientific and legal concepts and provide clear, pragmatic advice in a commercial context

Job description

We are seeking a highly motivated and goal-oriented Image Analysis Specialist/Engineer/Coordinator to develop and apply cutting-edge light microscopy image analysis workflows. The salary range is 3 140 – 4 440 € / month. Title and salary will be based on your experience, skills and merits. The position is initially available from 1.1.2026 to 31.12.2028.

The position

This role offers a unique opportunity to apply and integrate advanced image processing techniques to progress the fields of biomedical and life sciences. Working within a team of biologists, physicists and engineers, the specialist will help build robust and reproducible protocols to extract meaningful quantitative information from both simple and complex microscopy datasets and present it effectively. 

This is a joint position between Biomedicum Imaging Unit BIU at the Meilahti campus and Light Microscopy Unit LMU at the Viikki campus, which are open access core facilities offering a wide variety of basic and advanced light microscopy techniques to several hundred local, national and international users annually. 

Specific tasks

• Develop and apply different image analysis approaches to, for example, segment, track, and characterize cellular structures and dynamics in biological systems, including 3D and timelapse light microscopy data, and embed these approaches into the general service portfolio of BIU/LMU.
• Maintain custom scripts and software tools for microscopy image analysis and data processing, implement image analysis according to FAIR principles.
• Create a well organised, version controlled (including software version packaging) space for sharing image analysis workflows.
• Communicate concepts of image analysis and their relevance for biological questions to experts and non-experts.
• Take part in the planning stage of users’ imaging projects.
• Organise monthly Helsinki Bioimaging Call4Help sessions for users.

Qualifications

• PhD in computer science, biological science (e.g. cell biology, biophysics, bioengineering), physical science, or related science or engineering field; or equivalent combination of degree and experience required.
• Extensive experience with image analysis principles and algorithms.
• Proficiency with command line prompting and at least one programming language. 
• Familiarity with software engineering practices such as version management, build management, and testing.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a group.

In addition, one or more of the following would be advantageous:

• Knowledge of light microscopy imaging modalities, and image artifacts.
• Experience with 3D image data analysis and 3D image visualization.
• Experience with machine learning or deep learning-based segmentation algorithms.
• Experience with statistical analysis to interpret quantitative image data and generate biological insights.
• Experience in working in a multi-disciplinary environment in academic or industrial settings.

Contract & salary

The position is initially available from 1.1.2026 to 31.12.2028.

The salary is based on the salary system of Finnish universities for technical and support staff. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The salary range is 3 140 – 4 440 € / month. Title and salary will be based on your experience, skills and merits.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral researcher and Doctoral researcher (or Research assistant) to join the Photosynthetic Microbes group led by Professor Yagut Allahverdiyeva-Rinne. The positions are part of the AlgaCircle project funded by Business Finland and several Finnish companies. The work will be carried out at the Faculty of Technology, within the Department of Life Technologies, in Turku, Finland. Employment will start on 1 January 2026, or as agreed. The successful candidate will be offered a fixed one-year contract, with the possibility of extension. Doctoral Researcher will be enrolled to the University of Turku Graduate School  (UTUGS) and after that the person will be employed for at least 3 years.

About the Photosynthetic Microbes Research Group

We study the regulation of photosynthesis and apply photosynthetic principles to develop sustainable biotechnologies. Our research encompasses several areas, including the elucidation of photosynthetic electron transport pathways, engineering photosynthesis for enhanced bioproduction of solar chemicals, biophotovoltaic (BPV) systems, and large-scale algal cultivation for phytoremediation and the production of green chemicals such as biostimulants and biopesticides

The truly international and large PhotoMicrobes group is involved in several EU, Nordic, and national projects and regularly publishes its research outcomes in highly respected journals. We have established a broad research network with connections to leading international laboratories and industrial partners. Job description

The AlgaCircle project aims to utilize effluents from Finnish industries to cultivate microalgae and upgrade the resulting biomass through a multiproduct biorefinery approach. The project is carried out in collaboration with several industrial partners.

Position #1 will focus on testing different algal formulations on crops and will work in close collaboration with researchers operating large photobioreactors. Part of the experiments will be conducted together with the NAPPI plant phenotyping platform.

Position #2 will focus on optimizing the phytoremediation of industrial effluents by adjusting photobioreactor parameters and applying genetic engineering and synthetic biology approaches.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for highly motivated and enthusiastic applicants. Candidates applying for the postdoctoral researcher position are expected to hold a doctoral degree and have a strong academic background, including first-author publications in the fields of plant science, photosynthesis, agriculture, or biotechnology.

Applicants for the doctoral researcher/project researcher position must hold a Master’s degree (MSc) in biotechnology, plant science, molecular biology, biophysics, or a related field (good academic performance is considered an asset). Students who have not yet completed their degree may also apply and start as research assistants. Salary and trial period

The salary is determined by the collective agreement system of the Finnish universities. The salaries are determined in accordance with the university salary system for teaching and research personnel. The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience based on the University salary system and will at the beginning of the employment be for a postdoctoral researcher approximately 3600-3800 €/month. If a doctoral student is hired for the position, the starting salary will be approximately 2500-2600 €/month and for a research assistant 2280 eur/month.

The position has a trial period of six months.
