Human Brown Fat Research Group (located in Turku, Turku PET Centre) is looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher for a fixed term position, starting 1 August 2026, ending 31 Januray 2028.

Job description

Your responsibility is the following: to implement and conduct a clinical exercise trial and conduct O-15 O2 and O-15 H2O measurements for brown fat and skeletal muscle perfusion and oxygen consumption (if available) using PET-CT imaging. Other measurements, including OGTT, fitness tests, continuous glucose monitoring, energy expenditure, etc., will be included. Other responsibilities include data analysis and reporting, scientific publishing, participation in supervision and research group activities, grant applications as well as national and international collaboration.

Who we are looking for

The candidate should hold a PhD degree. We are seeking a candidate with a strong background in Exercise Physiology and prior experience conducting clinical exercise trials. Experience with imaging methods -particularly PET-CT and MRI- is required.

The position involves designing, conducting, and analysing measurements using a PET/CT system. Candidates should preferably be able to demonstrate previous expertise in these areas, for example through relevant publications.

In addition, the role will involve working with omics data derived from skeletal muscle and adipose tissue. Experience in this field, particularly when combined with PET-CT image analysis, will be highly valued. Knowledge and experience related to obesity physiology are also considered an advantage.

Essential skills include excellent written and spoken English and Finnish, strong communication abilities, the capacity to conduct independent research and contribute to scientific publishing, as well as effective teamwork skills.

Salary and trial period

Salary is determined in accordance with levels OV05-OV06, the Finnish Universities Salary System for Research and Teaching Personnel. The task-specific salary is 3 293,89 ­– 3 841,13 EUR per month. In addition to task-specific salary, personal performance based salary is paid.

The position has a trial period of six months.

Research assistant, Exercise physiology – Jyväskylä

Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences is seeking to recruit a research assistant to work in the project “Female sex hormone and menopause effects on cortico-reticular functioning (MENSA)”. The position is a fixed-term contract for the period of 1.8.2026-31.8.2027, with the prospect of expanding the role into a doctoral researcher position either during this term or upon its completion.

The project seeks to establish whether fluctuating concentrations of estrogen and/or progesterone influence central nervous system functioning and whether this, in turn, affects physical performance. The project includes three experiments in different cohorts where measurements are performed during times that endocrine hormone concentrations are high and are low. Data tracking physical performance and neuronal functioning at different phases of the eumenorrheic cycle has already been collected and requires further data analyses and manuscript write-up. Data tracking physical performance and neuronal functioning related to menopause is currently beginning. Data measuring males undergoing prostate cancer treatment and an experimental estradiol add-back therapy is planned and likely to begin in 2027 (Project website: https://www.jyu.fi/en/projects/female-sex-hormone-and-menopause-effects-on-cortico-reticular-functioning-mensa).

Who should apply

The role of the successful candidate largely focusses on the experiments mentioned in the project description, data analysis, and scientific write-up for peer-review publication. Potential other roles within the research group of Simon Walker, such as supporting doctoral researchers in their measurements or analyses, presenting in seminars/workshops/public events etc., may also be undertaken during the course of the employment. We are looking for a person who has good problem-solving skills, is curious and motivated to learn, and is comfortable working independently as well as part of a team.

Prerequisites for the position are a near‑completed or recently completed Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. sport and exercise science, kinesiology, neuroscience), evidence of laboratory research experience in human subjects, and ability to write scientific text (e.g. prior publications or academic thesis) and communicate research findings verbally. We expect that the successful candidate can absorb theoretical and practical information quickly. Further, we value a keen interest in neuro- and electrophysiology and how hormones and exercise may modulate physiological functioning.

A trial period of six months will be applied at the beginning of the employment.

The salary for a research assistant is determined based on the task-specific demand level OV2 of the university salary system for teaching and research staff. The salary will be approximately 2500 euro/month (gross income), depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. A holiday bonus is paid to all employees. If you are relocating from abroad, we will support your move to Jyväskylä and Finland.
