Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Validation
Plan and execute laboratory experiments to validate and interrogate selected targets using state-of-the-art molecular and cellular techniques, along with undertaking Mechanism of Action studies.
Ensure experimental design meets high standards of reproducibility and scientific integrity.
Data Analysis & Reporting
Analyze and interpret experimental results to inform target and project progression.

Doctoral Researcher
in the Cancer Data Science group led by Associate Professor Mariike Kuijjer, at the iCAN Flagship in Digital Precision Cancer Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki.
The position is funded through a project by the Sigrid Jusélius Foundation titled “Regulatory determinants of metastatic progression in high-grade serous ovarian cancer.” The ideal starting date is summer or early fall 2026, but this is flexible and can be discussed. Our research
The Kuijjer group was established in 2018 at the University of Oslo and expanded to the University of Helsinki in 2025. The group focuses on developing computational and data science approaches to increase our understanding of gene regulation and how rewiring of gene regulatory networks can influence cancer development, progression, and disease heterogeneity. The group’s current projects use network science and artificial intelligence to develop tools that (i) integrate multi-modal data, (ii) model gene regulation at increased genomic and cellular resolution, (iii) refine the analysis of genome-wide regulatory networks. About the role
The advertised project aims to identify regulatory determinants of ovarian cancer progression through regulatory network modeling and analysis. The selected candidate will apply and extend network modeling approaches developed in the Kuijjer group to model patient- and cell type-specific gene regulatory networks using bulk and single-cell ovarian cancer data. These networks will be analyzed to define patient-specific regulatory heterogeneity in primary ovarian cancer, identify regulatory rewiring that drives metastatic progression, characterize the regulatory mechanisms modulated by therapeutic pressure, and assess how these programs relate to therapy response. The project will leverage various publicly available datasets as well as data from the in-house Oncosys-OVA study led by our collaborator Prof. Anniina Färkkilä, University of Helsinki. Overall, the project combines methodological development with biological discovery, offering opportunities to contribute both to computational innovation and to mechanistic insights into ovarian cancer progression.
The candidate
We seek a highly motivated candidate with strong computational skills in the field of high-throughput omics data analysis, comparative genomics, functional genomics, or related fields. The candidate is excited about applying computational tools to answer questions in cancer research. They are collaborative and creative, and have strong programming skills dedicated to the analysis of large-scale genomics data. Experience with the analysis of omics data is required for this position. Knowledge of cancer biology is a strong advantage. Experience with high-performance computing, genomic data integration, biological network analysis, and/or gene regulation is desirable, but not required.
The position is open to applicants with a Master’s degree in computational biology, bioinformatics, biostatistics, cancer genomics, network science, or related fields. Candidates who are finishing their Master’s thesis are also welcome to apply. The DNA sequencing and genomics laboratory / research infrastructure is looking for a RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE TECHNICIAN to start preferably before the end of 2025, or as soon as possible. Currently we have 5 full-time technicians working within the group, and we are looking for a new technician to join us and to be trained for NGS processes in the laboratory side using our current machinery. The contract is offered initially for 2 years with the possibility of extension as permanent employment.
The DNA sequencing and genomics laboratory is performing a wide variety of DNA and RNA analytics from RNA-seq to de novo genome projects using state of the art Next generation sequencing (NGS) including Element Biosciences and Illumina short-read and PacBio and ONT long-read approaches. We handle thousands of customer samples yearly using both these approaches.
About you
We are looking for a technician with a suitable degree from university of applied sciences or university, who is precise and good at keeping notes of their work. Previous experience with working with DNA/RNA or in making sequencing libraries would be seen as a definite advantage. An interest in instrumentation and /or robotics is a benefit.
The suitable candidate has computer literacy (Windows, Excel, Word) and an ability to work as a part of a team and positive attitude. The required language proficiency for this position is Finnish and English.

The Cardiovascular Genomics Lab (Kaikkonen Lab) at the A.I. Virtanen Institute, University of Eastern Finland is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Postdoctoral Researcher. This position is part of an ERC-funded project entitled SECRET that aims to unravel the complex genetic and gene regulatory mechanisms underlying atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD).
The SECRET project focuses on exploring the functional impacts of specific ASCVD-associated cis-regulatory variants identified in GWAS studies. The project will initially screen how these variants influence gene regulation in key vascular cells—endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells. Following the identification of key regulatory variants, further experiments will manipulate these genes directly using CRISPR interference (CRISPRi) and CRISPR activation (CRISPRa) to observe the effects on broader gene expression patterns and cellular responses. The generated data will be used to identify convergences around gene regulatory networks, helping to uncover the mechanisms, functions, and pathways that underlie ASCVD risk.
The position is being offered as a 2-year appointment with a 1-2 year extension option. The position is filled for a fixed-term due to it pertaining to a specific project task. A probationary period is applied to all new members of the staff.
The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. The salary comprises two components: a job-related salary element and a personal salary element. In this position, the job requirement level is based on levels 5-6 on the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff.
