Job description

The DNA sequencing and genomics laboratory / research infrastructure is looking for a RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE TECHNICIAN to start preferably before the end of 2025, or as soon as possible. Currently we have 5 full-time technicians working within the group, and we are looking for a new technician to join us and to be trained for NGS processes in the laboratory side using our current machinery. The contract is offered initially for 2 years with the possibility of extension as permanent employment. 

The DNA sequencing and genomics laboratory is performing a wide variety of DNA and RNA analytics from RNA-seq to de novo genome projects using state of the art Next generation sequencing (NGS) including Element Biosciences and Illumina short-read and PacBio and ONT long-read approaches. We handle thousands of customer samples yearly using both these approaches. 

About you

We are looking for a technician with a suitable degree from university of applied sciences or university, who is precise and good at keeping notes of their work. Previous experience with working with DNA/RNA or in making sequencing libraries would be seen as a definite advantage. An interest in instrumentation and /or robotics is a benefit. 

The suitable candidate has computer literacy (Windows, Excel, Word) and an ability to work as a part of a team and positive attitude. The required language proficiency for this position is Finnish and English.

Contract and salary

The position is available as negotiated, but we hope you could start preferably before the end of 2025. The position is offered initially for a fixed-term of two years, but a possibility for permanent extension may be available after that. 

The salary is based on the general collective agreement for Finnish universities. The position will be filled at University support and technical staff demand level MV06 for research infrastructures (RI-technician). Gross salary range is ca. 2,500 – 3,300 €/month, depending on experience and qualifications. A 6-month trial period is applied.

Laboratory Coordinator in Next Generation Sequencing

Description:
FIMM Tech Centre Sequencing Unit is a service laboratory providing tailored DNA and RNA analysis services for Finnish scientific community. Sequencing Unit has a long history for delivering Sanger and NGS sequencing services with state-of-the-art technologies. The unit supports research at University of Helsinki and functions as a national and international infrastructure platform for academic researchers.

We currently have an opening for a laboratory coordinator to support day-to-day operations and assay development. The primary activities of the position include, but are not limited to:
• Daily sample preparation workflows from isolated nucleic acids to next generation sequencing (NGS) libraries
• Scientific laboratory support for NGS projects
• Maintenance of laboratory and equipment
• Method and protocol development

The tasks include streamlining of internal processes such as ordering, managing inventories, experimental work and data management. The laboratory coordinator will work independently as well as closely in collaboration with researchers and staff in Sequencing unit and other units of FIMM Tech Centre.

Qualification and experience:
Candidates should have master’s degree or equivalent in biotechnology, biology, biochemistry, biomedical laboratory science, engineering, or a related discipline including proven experience at least in assay development and nucleic acid analysis techniques like DNA/RNA extraction and quality control. Previous experience on NGS will be highly valued. The successful candidate is expected to have excellent problem solving, troubleshooting, and analytical skills, and is able to work systematically. In addition, the candidate should be fluent in English, have good interpersonal and communication skills as well as a service-minded attitude.

Salary & contract:
The salary will commensurate with qualifications based on the university salary system. A contract will be offered initially for two years. Extension beyond this is possible depending on the availability of funding. A six-month trial period will be applied.
