Job Description
Finnish Food Authority is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to join the Risk Assessment Unit. The position focuses on food safety risk assessment combined with benefit assessment.
This postdoc position is part of Postdoctoral Programme for Research Institutes in Finland. The Programme is funded from the Finnish long-term research and development (R&D) plan. The Programme recruits 85 new postdoctoral researchers to 12 Finnish government research institutes between 2025 and 2028. The aim of the Programme is to strengthen R&D competence in areas important to society and business. Postdoctoral researchers will drive impactful, high-level research bridging science, industry, and administration. The Programme supports postdoctoral researcher’s networking and mobility between sectors.
Risk-benefit assessment (RBA) is crucial when decisions affecting food consumption may have simultaneous effects on microbiological and chemical hazards as well as on nutrient intake. Conducting comprehensive risk-benefit assessments requires the continuous development of assessment methods, both internationally and in situations specific to Finland. For example, the guidance document of the European Food Safety Authority on risk-benefit assessment of foods only covers chemical risk-benefit assessments. International research is progressing with many RBA applications, from which Finland can also benefit by participating in the development. The work will build on already published assessments where the Risk Assessment Unit of Finnish Food Authority has been a partner.
The postdoctoral researcher will be developing methods for comparing chemical and microbiological risks using DALY metrics and investigating other alternative metrics and approaches for comparison of different types of health effects occurring at different timescales. Inclusion of zoonotic effects can be a possible addition, depending on the field of the postdoctoral researcher’s doctoral thesis. We anticipate that the work will involve comparing and combining top-down (population attributable fraction to effects) and bottom-up (exposure and dose response) assessments in risk comparisons. The postdoctoral researcher will also be responsible for collecting data and applying methods to selected food groups, hazards, risks, and benefits.
Scientific publishing of the developed methods and the assessment results is an essential part of the duties. The postdoctoral researcher is also expected to co-operate with risk managers (i.e. the users of the project outputs) throughout the project, and to contribute to the application of further research funding.
Salary
Demand level 9 (4111.95 e/month) + up to 50% personal performance-based supplement (typically 14-20% for new employees).

Tehtävän kuvaus
Luonnonvarakeskus etsii Post Doc tutkijaa Genomiikka ja jalostus tutkimusryhmään. Valittava henkilö tulee työskentelemään eläingenetiikan genomisen arvostelun projekteissa. Keskeisimpänä tehtävänä on genomisen arvostelun lineaaristen ja epälineaaristen arvostelumallien kehittäminen. Lisäksi tehtäviin kuuluu tutkimustulosten julkaiseminen vertaisarvioiduissa tieteellisissä julkaisusarjoissa ja osallistuminen rahoitushakemusten valmisteluun. Valittavan henkilön odotetaan työskentelevän tiimin jäsenenä yhdessä muiden laskennallisen genetiikan tutkijoiden kanssa ja tekemään läheistä yhteistyötä käytännön eläin- ja kasvinjalostuksen toimijoiden kanssa. Tehtävä antaa hyvän mahdollisuuden kehittyä arvostetuksi asiantuntijaksi jalostusarvojen estimoinnissa.
Työsuhteen kesto on aluksi kaksi vuotta, mutta siinä on mahdollisuus optiovuodelle (2 + 1).

Hakijalta odotamme
Valittavalla hakijalla tulee olla tohtorin tutkinto eläinjalostuksessa, kvantitatiivisessa genetiikassa, tilastotieteessä, sovelletussa matematiikassa tai vastaavalta alalta. Vaadimme osoitettua taitoa ja kokemusta geneettisten ja/tai genomisten menetelmien soveltamisesta suuriin datoihin. Odotamme myös hyviä taitoja kvantitatiivisessa genetiikassa ja matemaattisessa mallinnuksessa. Hyvät taidot matemaattisessa tilastotieteessä ja ohjelmoinnissa (Fortran, C tai vastaava) katsotaan eduksi.
Valittavalla henkilöllä odotetaan olevan julkaisuja vertaisarvioiduissa tieteellisissä julkaisusarjoissa. Onnistunut rahoituksenhaku katsotaan eduksi. Odotamme myös hyviä vuorovaikutustaitoja sekä erinomaista suullista ja kirjallista englannin kielen taitoa.

The laboratory of Dr. Tommi Kajander at the Institute of Biotechnology, HiLIFE, University of Helsinki, Finland, is inviting applications for post-doctoral researcher in the area of protein biochemistry and structural biology in a joint project with Prof. Mart Saarma’s laboratory. We are seeking for dedicated and enthusiastic scientist to work on the structure and function of novel endoplasmic reticulum effector protein-receptor interactions in ER stress response regulation. Main targets are CDNF and MANF proteins and their interaction complexes in the ER.
The Institute of Biotechnology is a research institute at University of Helsinki, located in the Viikki science park. The institute harbors ~35 research groups and 250 researchers, and it operates at the highest international level. The institute has excellent infrastructure for structural biology (X-ray, CryoEM, NMR) including the crystallography core facility run by the PI.
The post-doctoral applicants should hold PhD in biochemistry or a related field. Strong experience in protein biochemistry including cloning and mutagenesis and protein expression and purification, from various hosts and good communication skills in English are required. Knowledge and experience in structural biology and molecular biophysics techiques and cell culture is beneficial. This is an opportunity to work on high impact targets and obtain in depth technical skills in the research area. The position will provide excellent opportunities for collaborations, as this is a joint project in close collaboration with Prof. Mart Saarma’s group, with also potential international and national collaborations and visits to e.g. synchrotron sources in Europe (ESRF, DLS, MAXIV). An attitude to carry out ambitious research projects, good problem solving skills, goal-oriented mind-set and willingness to learn and apply new methodologies is highly appreciated. The working language of the laboratory is English; knowledge of Finnish is not a requirement.
The postdoctoral position is initially limited to 1 year, with a possibility of extension to three years. The salaries will be based on the University salary scheme (level 5) for teaching and research personnel composed of both task specific and personal performance component The position is available immediately or as agreed.
