VTT is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to join its Protein Production team for a fixed-term three-year position starting in January 2026. The team focuses on filamentous fungi, particularly Trichoderma reesei, for the production of sustainable food and material proteins, enzyme mixtures, and therapeutic proteins.

The Postdoctoral Researcher will contribute to digitalizing and automating fungal strain development, using data-driven approaches, machine learning, and high-throughput experimentation within the Design-Build-Test-Learn framework. The role aims to accelerate the creation of high-quality cell factories, particularly for non-model organisms where biofoundry pipelines are still under development.

Key responsibilities include:

• Laboratory research to develop pipelines for high-throughput creation and analysis of T. reesei protein production strains
• Developing and implementing automated methods, including AI-based analysis and predictive design, to screen high-performing fungal strains
• Designing, developing, and optimizing fungal chassis strains for traits such as increased secretion, reduced carbon catabolite repression, and lower proteolytic activity
• Establishing standards and metrics for biofoundry operations to translate small-scale data to larger-scale production
• Contributing to a collaborative and supportive team environment
• Disseminating research through publications and participating in public funding proposals
• Supervising or mentoring junior team members

Qualifications:

• PhD earned within the last five years in biotechnology, microbiology/biochemistry, biochemical engineering, or a related field
• Experience with high-throughput methods, automation, and relevant programming languages
• Knowledge of fungal biology, strain engineering, bioinformatics, or bioprocess engineering is an asset
• Excellent English communication skills, both written and spoken

Tässä tehtävässä sinulla on keskeinen rooli tutkimustyössä osana projektitiimiä, joka työskentelee yhteiskunnallisesti tärkeiden aiheiden parissa; esimerkkeinä kestävän kehityksen ei-eläinperäiset ruokaproteiinit, rokotteiden tuotanto antibioottien käytön vähentämiseksi, entsyymiseokset biopolttoaineiden valmistukseen, sekä terapeuttiset proteiinit ja lääkevalmisteet. Tutkimuksemme keinoin olemme rakentamassa kestävää ruoantuotantoa ja kehittämässä uudenlaisia biologisia materiaaliratkaisuja.

Tehtäviisi kuuluvat:

• Työskentely asiakasprojekteissa, joissa kehitetään erilaisten proteiinien tuottoon käytettäviä mikrobikantoja – kantojen rakennus ja analysointi kuuluvat pääasiallisiin työtehtäviisi
• Tutkimus- ja kehitystyön toteutus tutkijoiden ohjauksessa
• Tulosten dokumentointi elektroniseen laboratoriopäiväkirjaan
• Tulosten yhteenveto ja raportointi
• Osallistuminen laboratorion yleisiin töihin
   

Olet etsimämme henkilö, kun sinulla on:

• laboratorioanalyytikon/-teknikon tutkinto tai muu tehtävään soveltuva ammattikoulu- tai AMK-tutkinto
• muutaman vuoden kokemus mikro-/molekyylibiologian tutkimusmenetelmistä tai vaihtoehtoisesti opintojesi kautta osaamista näistä menetelmistä
• kokemusta tai koulutusta geenitekniikan työskentelytavoista
• aikaisempi kokemus hiiva- tai homesienityöskentelystä luetaan eduksi, mutta ei ole ehdoton vaatimus – tekemällä oppii
• hyvät kommunikointi- ja yhteistyötaidot, sillä tulet työskentelemään vaihtelevissa projekteissa tutkijoiden, teknikoiden ja asiakkaiden kanssa. Työympäristömme on hyvin kansainvälinen, joten odotamme sinulta myös kykyä työskennellä englannin kielellä.

We are now looking for a Laboratory Technician to work on projects to develop new biotechnology and microbial systems for protein production.

With us you will be responsible for laboratory project work with eukaryotic microbes. In our team you will be working in close collaboration with researchers and scientist from many different domains in protein production. You will have a full support from the current senior laboratory staff and we expect that you have a can-do attitude and you are eager to develop your skills.

We expect you to have

We expect you to have a laboratory technician or comparable technical degree and excellent laboratory skills and experience in molecular biology. We appreciate a strong experience in gene technology techniques and experience in work with yeast or filamentous fungi would be beneficial. The work requires good written and spoken English, as well as the capabilities to scientific reporting.
