Role and salary
The Vascular Biology Group led by Dr. Johanna Laakkonen is recruiting an ethusiastic and highly motivated PhD candidate or postdoctoral researcher to study angiocrine signalling in vessel remodeling and therapeutic targeting of cardiovascular diseases.We utilize state-of-the art cell biological, tissue imaging and omics methods to study disease mechanisms. Our group is part of the Academy of Finland’s Flagship Programme GeneCellNano that develops therapeutics for cardiovascular diseases. Based on our findings in clinical samples, we develop novel therapeutics in 3D in vitro modelsand in vivo models.

The position is filled for a fixed-term period from 1 April 2023 until 31 February 2025, or as agreed upon with the candidate, with a option to extend the term. The position is filled for a fixed-term due to it pertaining to a specific project. A probationary period is applied to all new members of the staff. The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system of the Finnish universities. The salary consists two components: a job requirement component and a personal performance component. For a Postdoctoral/Project Researcher, the job requirement component is based on level 5 of the job requirement chart for teaching and research staff. For a Doctoral Researcher, the job requirement component is based on levels 2-4 of the job requirement chart for teaching and research staff. The personal performance component can be a minimum of 6 % and a maximum of 50 % of the above-mentioned sum. At the beginning the salary will be between EUR 2,319-3,339 (as doctoral researcher) or EUR 3,348-3,866 (as postdoctoral/project researcher).

MSc (PhD position) or PhD (Postdoctoral/Project Researcher position) in biomedicine, biotechnology or molecular medicine, or an equivalent discipline.
Experience with in vivo models, cell culturing, bioinformatics or Python programming is considered an advantage.

Good knowledge of written and spoken English.
A person to be appointed to the Postdoctoral Researcher position is required to hold a suitable doctoral degree. If you have been awarded your doctoral degree less than five years ago, the post will be one of a Postdoctoral Researcher. If the doctoral degree has been awarded more than five years ago, the post will be one of a Project Researcher. In this context, five years is the net period of time, which does not include maternity leave, parental leave, military service, etc. The position of postdoctoral researcher shall always be filled for a fixed term (UEF University Regulations, Section 31).
A person appointed to the Doctoral Researcher position shall be qualified to pursue postgraduate studies, i.e., they are required to have completed a suitable higher university degree or an equivalent education abroad that would qualify the person for similar academic studies. Doctoral Researcher (Ph.D. student) in the field of Biomedical Engineering
to join its team to work in a challenging Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) project. This doctoral research is part of the Horizon 2020 MSCA Innovative Training Network Carthago (https://itn-carthago.sites.uu.nl/) focusing on novel gene delivery to treat osteoarthritis and intervertebral disc degeneration.
The Doctoral Researcher position focuses on studies of ultrasound-enhanced delivery of nucleic acids into cell, tissues and joints. Specific focus is on delivery to chondrocytes, articular cartilage and intervertebral disc. This project is highly experimental work and employs non-linear ultrasonic mechanisms, e.g. acoustic streaming and sound-bubble -interactions, to enable actuation and manipulation of matter leading to intended delivery outcome.
Your role We are looking for a Doctoral Researcher to investigate ultrasonic methods for delivery of nucleic acids into tissues and cells in connective tissues such as articular cartilage and intervertebral disc. These investigated state-of-the-art methods are expected to contribute to new regenerative therapies for management of degenerative joint disease such as osteoarthritis. The work is conducted mainly at Aalto University with mobility to other universities of the Carthago consortium.
Your work will include ultrasonic experimentation with cell cultures, tissue samples, building and enhancing experimental arrangements and conducting data analysis (signals, microscopy images). Our research at the Medical Ultrasonics Laboratory (MEDUSA, http://medusa.aalto.fi) in the Department of Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering (NBE), Aalto University, focuses on innovating new ultrasound platforms for biomedical use with a goal to translate these into hospital and research environments. Ultrasound provides unconventional means to manipulate human tissue and matter on microscopic and macroscopic levels. When intended, ultrasonic exposures generating sonic force fields can be applied from a distance, e.g. through the skin. This can permit creation of non-invasive and minimally invasive methods for various medical applications.
Your background and expertise The ideal candidate has the following qualities:

How You Will Contribute
Senior Medical Affairs Scientist (Sr MAS) leads and executes medical strategies for demonstration and communication of the therapeutic value of assigned Pfizer product(s) in healthcare and for the optimization of patient outcomes.
Sr MAS uses a science-based and customer-focused approach to advance medical engagement, clinical research, data generation and co-creation of innovative solutions based on customer needs. In this position the Sr MAS will work within the Inflammation & Immunology Medical Affairs team in Finland within the therapeutic area’s rheumatology, gastroenterology, and dermatology.
The key responsibilities in this role include:
Develops and implements customer-focused medical strategies for the assigned Pfizer product(s) in Finland
Acts as the scientific point of contact for HCPs, academia, and other ext. stakeholders
Leads medical to medical communication in the therapeutic area and drives personalized interactions across multiple channels and builds enduring relationships with key stakeholders and institutions
Proactively identifies possibilities and digital solutions to optimize patient outcomes in collaboration with internal colleagues and external partners
Advances Pfizer-sponsored clinical research in country in close collaboration with Clinical Research colleagues and proactively identifies local research opportunities and high-performing trial sites
Advances KOL and institutional involvement in Pfizer-sponsored research and identifies and drives research collaborations with key customers
Actively Identifies data gaps for pipelines assets and actively collaborates with Medical Affairs Data Expert and H&V colleagues in generation of value-based data strategies and plans.
Actively collaborates with above-country colleagues and external stakeholders on pipeline assets for evaluation of local data generation opportunities and ensuring value-based data at launch and across the entire product life cycle
Provides innovative solutions and exercises independent judgment in developing tactics and criteria for achieving objectives
Contributes to company strategies and plans by providing medical input through actionable customer insights
Proactively builds strategic partnerships and strong collaboration with internal colleagues and effectively leads cross-functional teams
Is a key contributor to ensure company’s high ethical medical standards and compliance
What We Expect
Higher academic degree in relevant science area, with strong scientific skills and/or clinical experience. MD, PhD or PharmD is a preference
Several years of professional experience in a relevant area
Business acumen and high level of industry understanding
Ability to work in an international setting in a matrix organization
Deep scientific knowledge and competence in the therapeutic area
Strong communication and presentations skills and ability to deliver scientific and strategic messages
Good knowledge of the national healthcare system
Knowledge of the Code of Ethics and relevant regulations

Job Description
We are looking forhighly qualified and motivated Doctoral Researchers to join the The Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology (MET) at Tampere University.Our Faculty is dedicated to pursuing world-class research and delivering high-quality education in the fields of biomedical engineering, biotechnology, medicine, and health technology. We conduct basic, applied, as well as clinical research in collaboration with Tampere University Hospital (TAYS). Thus, the environment is strongly built also to conduct translational research. Strong existing research areas in health research include biomedical engineering fields from biomaterials and microtechnologies to health data science, cell, and molecular biology with applications for example in cancer, cardiovascular and celiac diseases, and immunology.
The position of doctoral researcher offers you the opportunity to concentrate full time on your doctoral studies while receiving high-quality supervision along with the freedom and encouragement to develop your ideas in a supportive, inspirational and multidisciplinary research environment.
Doctoral researchers are hired on a fixed-term basis. The exact lenght of the contract will depend on the current stage of your studies and your expected graduation date. The maximum length is four years which is also the expected duration of full-time studies.
Besides conducting research for your dissertation, you may be expected to teach or perform other duties related to your studies at the Faculty. These duties may not exceed 5% of your overall working hours. Successful candidates pursue a doctoral degree in the Doctoral Programmes in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology.
The positions carry a trial period, and the progress of the thesis work is evaluated annually according to the personal study and supervisory plan for doctoral studies.
In addition to faculty positions, it is possible to apply for the Finland Fellowships. The Finland Fellowships are 4-year positions which are available to non-EU/EEA citizens who have got/will get a study right for postgraduate studies in 2023. Finland Fellowships are part of the national internationalisation programme of Finnish higher education, coordinated and funded by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture. The aim of the programme is to enhance international activities and recruitment in Finnish higher education and support international students and researchers in establishing successful careers in Finland. As outlined in the national programme, Finland Fellowship placements are available for non-EU/EEA citizens and are partly funded through the national Finland Scholarship programme. The Finland Fellowship contributes to the salary paid by Tampere University and includes a 2000 EUR arrival allowance paid after arrival in Finland.
Requirements
Successful candidates will have a higher university degree, be pursuing a doctoral degree in faculty’s doctoral program and will present an approved study and research plan, before writing the contract. A master’s degree is required to be selected for the position of a doctoral researcher. Students who have started their studies in a faculty’s doctoral programme before 31.12.2021 must have their annual follow-up group meeting completed before starting the employment.
Furthermore, before starting the employment, the applicant must have the right to pursue doctoral studies in the Faculty’s doctoral programme and an approved study and research plan. If the student is not yet part of the Faculty’s doctoral programme (Doctoral Programme in Medicine, Biosciences and Biomedical Engineering, Doctoral Programme in Medicine and Life Sciences, Doctoral Programme in Biomedical Sciences and Engineering), the student must contact the faculty group leader and agree on the supervision of doctoral studies and the availability of a guidance resource before submitting the application. Tampereen yliopiston lääketieteen ja terveysteknologian tiedekunnassa on haettavana useita väitöskirjatutkijan määräaikaisia tehtäviä.
Lääketieteen ja terveysteknologian tiedekuntamme on monialainen biolääketieteen tekniikan, bioteknologian, lääketieteen ja terveysteknologian tutkimuksen ja opetuksen korkeatasoinen yksikkö. Teemme kansainvälisesti merkittävää perus- ja soveltavaa tutkimusta.
Etsimme lahjakkaita ja motivoituneita väitöskirjatutkijoita, joiden tehtävänä on suorittaa tohtorin tutkinto Tampereen yliopistossa Lääketieteen ja terveysteknologian tiedekunnan tohtoriohjelmassa. Väitöskirjatutkijan tehtävä tarjoaa mahdollisuuden keskittyä kokopäiväisesti jatko-opintoihisi samalla, kun saat korkealaatuista ohjausta sekä vapauden ja kannustuksen kehittää ideoitasi inspiroivassa ja monialaisessa tutkimusympäristössä.
Tehtävät ovat määräaikaisia ja työsuhteen pituus määräytyy opiskelutilanteen ja valmistumistavoitteen perusteella. Tehtävät täytetään korkeintaan neljän vuoden määräajaksi, mikä on myös tutkinnon tavoiteaika.
Väitöskirjatutkijan tehtäviin voi sisältyä väitöskirjatutkimuksen lisäksi osallistuminen opetukseen tai muihin tiedekunnan tehtäviin, jotka tukevat opintojasi. Näiden tehtävien osuus voi olla enintään 5 % kokonaistyöajasta. Väitöskirjatutkijat suorittavat tohtorintutkinnon jossakin tiedekuntamme tohtoriohjelmista.
Työsuhteeseen kuuluu koeaika ja vuosittain tapahtuva arviointi aikataulutetun opinto- ja ohjaussuunnitelman perusteella.

Edellytykset
Väitöskirjatutkijan tehtävään valittavalta edellytetään ylempää korkeakoulututkintoa. Ennen työsuhteen alkamista väitöskirjatutkijalla on oltava jatko-opinto-oikeus tiedekunnan tohtoriohjelmaan sekä hyväksytty opinto- ja tutkimussuunnitelma. Tiedekunnan tohtoriohjelmiin ennen 31.12.2022 valituilla opiskelijoilla tulee olla seurantaryhmänkokoukset käytynä ennen työsuhteen aloittamista tohtoriohjelmassa. Mikäli opiskelija ei vielä hakemusta jättäessään kuulu tiedekunnan tohtoriohjelmaan (Lääketieteen, biotieteiden ja biolääketieteen tekniikan tohtoriohjelma, Lääketieteen ja biotieteiden tohtoriohjelma, Biolääketieteen tekniikan tohtoriohjelma), hänen tulee olla yhteydessä tiedekunnan ryhmänjohtajaan ja sopia jatko-opintojen ohjaamisesta ja ohjausresurssin saatavuudesta ennen hakemuksen jättämistä. Tiedekunnan tohtoriohjelmaan valittavien opiskelijoiden soveltuvuutta, valmiuksia ja sitoutumista jatko-opintojen menestykselliseen suorittamiseen arvioidaan tiedekuntaneuvoston vahvistamin perustein:

Tiedekunnan tohtoriohjelman ohjausryhmä esittää väitöskirjatutkijat valittavaksi tohtoriohjelmaan ja työsuhteesta päättää tiedekunnan dekaani.

Tarjoamme
Tehtävät täytetään määräajaksi ja ne alkavat toukokuun 2023 alussa tai sopimuksen mukaan. Tehtävässä sovelletaan työsopimuslain mukaista koeaikaa.
Tehtävän palkkaus määräytyy yliopistojen yleisen työehtosopimuksen opetus- ja tutkimushenkilöstön palkkausjärjestelmän mukaisesti. Väitöskirjatutkijan tehtävässä alustava vaativuustaso on 2–4 riippuen tutkimustyön vaiheesta. Lisäksi maksetaan henkilökohtaiseen työstä suoriutumiseen perustuvaa palkanosaa.
