We are seeking a highly motivated Research Technician / Laboratory Manager to join our collaborative, multidisciplinary research team. Our work focuses on understanding aging-related genetic changes in blood cells and their roles in immunology and cancer development. We integrate large population-level cohort analyses with cutting-edge genome editing and single-cell approaches in cell lines and in patient samples.
The research group is led by Mikko Myllymäki, MD, PhD and our research group is located at the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM), University of Helsinki. We are also part of the Translational Immunology Research Program within the Faculty of Medicine.
The successful candidate will join a translational research environment integrating genetics, immunology, cell biology, bioinformatics, and clinical medicine.
Key Responsibilities
• Perform and support routine wet-lab work (such as DNA and RNA based workflows, protein-based workflows, genotyping)
• Culture and maintain leukemia cell lines and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs)
• Assist with sample logistics for single-cell workflows
• Coordinate laboratory reagent orders, maintain sample inventories, and take care of documentation
Comprehensive training will be provided for all techniques and responsibilities.
The position is full-time and fixed-term for three years, with a possibility for extension. A six-month probationary period will be applied (standard in Finnish university employment contracts).

• MSc in a relevant field (e.g., translational medicine, biomedicine, biochemistry, biotechnology, genetics, molecular biology)

About the role
In this role, you will work hands-on in the laboratory to develop and optimize lateral flow immunoassays. Join our vibrant research team where microsurgery, expertise, and technology revolutionize how we train and assess surgical skills! When stakes are high, there is little margin for error. In mission-critical tasks, such as microsurgery, every little movement can make the difference in a patient’s safety and well-being. To understand how expertise develops over time, the Synergetic Mechanisms in High-Precision Expertise (SyMPeX) project (website) develops data-driven solutions that promote ubiquitous long-term and sustainable training and objective skill evaluation.
We seek a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join our SyMPeX project funded by the Research Council of Finland. Situated in microsurgical training and operating rooms, our interdisciplinary project combines cutting-edge sensors with current computational tools and machine/deep learning. As a Postdoctoral Researcher, you will be a key member of our team responsible for designing the seamless integration of biosensors into microsurgical training, developing a robust framework for data collection, and advancing performance analytics. Together, we shift how we train, observe, and understand microsurgical expertise. You will collaborate with specialists in Computer Science, Microsurgery, Plastic Surgery, and Otolaryngology spanning three university hospitals worldwide.
As our new Postdoctoral Researcher, your main responsibilities will include:
- designing and integrating biosensing architecture for pervasive data capture from the state-of-the-art wearable sensors and cameras
- validating the framework and running systematic feasibility tests in the wild
- collaborating closely with researchers and clinicians to prepare for autonomous data collection in the training centers and/or operating rooms
- visiting project’s international partners at Kuopio University Hospital (Finland), Rigshospitalet (Denmark) and University of Alberta (Canada)
- publishing in high-impact journals and giving presentations at international conferences.
You will be based at the School of Computing of the University of Eastern Finland. You will be part of an interdisciplinary and international team of computer scientists, cognitive scientists, clinicians, and specialists. The SyMPeX project will collaborate with cutting-edge research groups in Finland (University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio University Hospital), Denmark (Rigshospitalet), the United States (Indiana University of Bloomington), and Canada (University of Alberta), who will provide complementary insights into domain-specific expertise and medical topics (simulation training of microsurgery and otolaryngology). You will have access to the state-of-the-art research facilities and sensors, including microscope eye tracking, motion sensing, and cardiac sensors.
The position will be filled for a fixed term of two years as from 1 April 2026 (or as agreed). The position will be filled for a fixed term due to a specific project task. A trial period is applied to all new members of the staff.
The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system for Finnish universities. The salary comprises two components: a job-related salary element and a personal salary element. For a Postdoctoral Researcher, the job-related salary element is based on level 5 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff. The personal salary element is 6-50% of the job-related salary element. At the beginning of the employment, the total salary will be approximately EUR 3,825 – 4,020 /month.

The position
This role offers a unique opportunity to apply and integrate advanced image processing techniques to progress the fields of biomedical and life sciences. Working within a team of biologists, physicists and engineers, the specialist will help build robust and reproducible protocols to extract meaningful quantitative information from both simple and complex microscopy datasets and present it effectively.
This is a joint position between Biomedicum Imaging Unit BIU at the Meilahti campus and Light Microscopy Unit LMU at the Viikki campus, which are open access core facilities offering a wide variety of basic and advanced light microscopy techniques to several hundred local, national and international users annually.
Specific tasks
• Develop and apply different image analysis approaches to, for example, segment, track, and characterize cellular structures and dynamics in biological systems, including 3D and timelapse light microscopy data, and embed these approaches into the general service portfolio of BIU/LMU.
• Maintain custom scripts and software tools for microscopy image analysis and data processing, implement image analysis according to FAIR principles.
• Create a well organised, version controlled (including software version packaging) space for sharing image analysis workflows.
• Communicate concepts of image analysis and their relevance for biological questions to experts and non-experts.
• Take part in the planning stage of users’ imaging projects.
• Organise monthly Helsinki Bioimaging Call4Help sessions for users.
Qualifications
• PhD in computer science, biological science (e.g. cell biology, biophysics, bioengineering), physical science, or related science or engineering field; or equivalent combination of degree and experience required.
• Extensive experience with image analysis principles and algorithms.
• Proficiency with command line prompting and at least one programming language.
• Familiarity with software engineering practices such as version management, build management, and testing.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a group.
In addition, one or more of the following would be advantageous:
• Knowledge of light microscopy imaging modalities, and image artifacts.
• Experience with 3D image data analysis and 3D image visualization.
• Experience with machine learning or deep learning-based segmentation algorithms.
• Experience with statistical analysis to interpret quantitative image data and generate biological insights.
• Experience in working in a multi-disciplinary environment in academic or industrial settings.
Contract & salary
The position is initially available from 1.1.2026 to 31.12.2028.
The salary is based on the salary system of Finnish universities for technical and support staff. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The salary range is 3 140 – 4 440 € / month. Title and salary will be based on your experience, skills and merits.

Työpaikkakuvaus
Turun yliopiston Bioteknologian laitos muodostuu neljästä toisiaan tukevasta osastosta, jotka keskittyvät opetukseen ja tutkimukseen biokemian, biotekniikan, elintarviketieteiden sekä molekulaarisen kasvibiologian aloilla. Erityisesti biomolekyylit sekä niiden solu- ja molekyylitason reaktiot ovat keskeisessä roolissa laitoksella tehtävässä opetuksessa ja tutkimuksessa. Bioteknologian laitos tarjoaa useita kandidaatin (LuK, TkK) ja maisterin (FM, DI) tutkinto-ohjelmia vastaamaan yhteiskunnan kasvavaan asiantuntijatarpeeseen.
Keskeiset tehtävät
Uusi biokemian toistaiseksi voimassa oleva yliopistonlehtorin tehtävä sijoittuu Turun yliopiston Bioteknologian laitokselle. Osana laitoksen opettajakuntaa valittava henkilö suunnittelee ja toteuttaa aktiivisesti kahden kandidaattitutkinto-ohjelman (biotekniikan TkK ja biokemian LuK) ja kahden maisteriohjelman (Biomolekyylien tuotanto DI ja Molekyylibiotieteet Biokemia FM) kokonaisuuksia.
Työtehtäviin sisältyy monipuolisia opetustehtäviä biotuotannon, teollisen mikrobiologian ja biomolekyylitieteiden aloilla. Tehtävään otettavalta henkilöltä toivomme aikaisempaa perehtyneisyyttä erityisesti yhteen tai useampaan seuraavista mikrobiologian osaamisalueista: (i) hienokemikaalien ja lääkeaineiden tuotto mikrobeissa, (ii) metabolianmuokkaus ja synteettisen biologia, ja (iii) fermentaatioprosessit ja bioprosessitekniikka. Opetustehtäviin lukeutuu esimerkiksi luentojen, kirjatenttien ja harjoitustöiden suunnitteleminen ja toteuttaminen sekä laboratoriokurssien ohjaaminen. Tehtävään kuuluu myös opinto-ohjausta, opinnäytetöiden, gradu-/diplomityöntekijöiden ja jatko-opiskelijoiden ohjaamista sekä muita hallintoon ja organisointiin liittyviä tehtäviä kuten tutkimusinfrastruktuurien ylläpito ja kehittäminen.
Tehtäväalaan liittyvä aikaisempi opetus-, julkaisu- ja tutkimustoiminta on välttämätöntä. Valittavan henkilön edellytetään osallistuvan aktiivisesti alan tutkimukseen ja hankkivan omaa tutkimusrahoitusta. Työkokemus biotekniikan alan teollisuudesta ja/tai tutkimusyhteistyö teollisuuden kanssa katsotaan eduksi.
Etsimämme henkilö
Tehtävän kelpoisuusvaatimuksista on säädetty Turun yliopiston johtosäännössä. Yliopistonlehtorin tehtävään otettavalta edellytetään soveltuvaa tohtorin tutkintoa sekä kykyä antaa laadukasta tutkimukseen perustuvaa opetusta ja ohjata opinnäytteitä. Kärkihakijoiden taidot arvioidaan kokonaisvaltaisesti sisältäen opetusnäytteen antamisen.

Palkkaus ja koeaika
Palkkasumma täsmentyy työsopimusta laadittaessa. Palkkaus määräytyy yliopistojen työehtosopimuksen perusteella. Tehtävä kuuluu opetus- ja tutkimushenkilökuntaan ja palkka on aiemmasta kokemuksesta ja osaamisesta riippuen noin 4200 – 4700 eur/kk. Tehtävä on toistaiseksi voimassa oleva ja siinä on kuuden kuukauden koeaika. Työsuhteen alkamisajankohta sijoittuu toukokuulle 2026 tai sopimuksen mukaan.

VTT is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to join its Protein Production team for a fixed-term three-year position starting in January 2026. The team focuses on filamentous fungi, particularly Trichoderma reesei, for the production of sustainable food and material proteins, enzyme mixtures, and therapeutic proteins.
The Postdoctoral Researcher will contribute to digitalizing and automating fungal strain development, using data-driven approaches, machine learning, and high-throughput experimentation within the Design-Build-Test-Learn framework. The role aims to accelerate the creation of high-quality cell factories, particularly for non-model organisms where biofoundry pipelines are still under development.
Key responsibilities include:
- Laboratory research to develop pipelines for high-throughput creation and analysis of T. reesei protein production strains
- Developing and implementing automated methods, including AI-based analysis and predictive design, to screen high-performing fungal strains
- Designing, developing, and optimizing fungal chassis strains for traits such as increased secretion, reduced carbon catabolite repression, and lower proteolytic activity
- Establishing standards and metrics for biofoundry operations to translate small-scale data to larger-scale production
- Contributing to a collaborative and supportive team environment
- Disseminating research through publications and participating in public funding proposals
- Supervising or mentoring junior team members
Qualifications:
- PhD earned within the last five years in biotechnology, microbiology/biochemistry, biochemical engineering, or a related field
- Experience with high-throughput methods, automation, and relevant programming languages
- Knowledge of fungal biology, strain engineering, bioinformatics, or bioprocess engineering is an asset
- Excellent English communication skills, both written and spoken

The role
In your role as a laboratory analyst/technician, your work is to skilfully and precisely perform laboratory experiments related to gene technology, microbiology, enzyme analytics, and automation. The daily tasks would include e.g. production of enzymes in fungal platform, analysis of laboratory scale cultivations and documentation of the results. About you
You hold a Bachelor´s degree from University of Applied Sciences or a technician´s degree and have hands-on skills in molecular biology methods (PCR, DNA extraction etc.) and microbiology methods, especially using bacteria or fungi. Laboratory experience in enzyme or other biotechnology industry is a clear asset. We are expecting a pragmatic and independent working style with the ability to prioritize and organize individual tasks for efficient throughput. We are looking for a reliable team player and value a high level of responsibility and accountability, as well as a willingness to further develop your skills.
