    Åbo Akademi University invites applications for a fixed-term position as Research Technician for the period 1.9.2026-31.12.2028. The position is located in the Cell Fate Lab, led by Professor Cecilia Sahlgren at the Biochemistry and Cell Biology unit, Faculty of Science and Engineering in Turku, Finland. The employment is full-time.

    WORK TASKS 
    As a Research Technician, you will support the everyday work of the Cell Fate Lab members (approx. 15 researchers and students), manage the infrastructure of the laboratory used also by collaborating researchers, and assist with scientific experimentation.  

    Your responsibilities will include: 

    • Maintain lab stocks and consumables: ordering, receiving, inventory/expiry tracking, freezer/fridge organization.
    • Prepare routine reagents (buffers, media, and standard solutions); aliquot and label.
    • Prepare DNA reagents: bacterial work as needed, plasmid preparation and sequencing.
    • Manage chemicals and safety: chemical inventory/SDS, correct storage/labelling, waste handling.
    • Perform and support cell culture (passaging, freezing/thawing, mycoplasma monitoring, sterile technique).
    • Support viral work as needed (e.g., lentiviral production/handling).
    • Contribute to routine experiments: western blotting, microscopy samples, and general cell biology lab assays.
    • Support team operations: help train new lab members and visitors in lab-specific technologies, basic procedures and maintain a well-functioning lab environment.

    REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
    Essential qualifications 

    • Educational level, such as a vocational laboratory assistant or laboratory technician degree; a polytechnic biomedical laboratory scientist, laboratory analyst, or laboratory services degree; or a MSc degree in the field of biosciences.
    • Familiarity with MS office programs and the related environment.
    • Hands-on experience in cell biology / molecular biology methods, with strong sterile technique.
    • Proven competence in mammalian cell culture and cell culture models.
    • Competence in core methods: buffer/media prep, plasmid prep, immunofluorescence samples, agarose gels, SDS-PAGE/western blotting.
    • Strong safety and compliance mindset (chemical handling, waste, documentation).
    • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills, including fluent written and spoken communication in English.

    Desirable attributes 

    • High organisational reliability (inventory control, labelling, record keeping).
    • Experience of the use or manufacture of advanced in vitro platforms (e.g., microfluidics, chip microfabrication, 3D printing, organoids, stretchers).
    • Experience with primary cells (eg primary vascular cells).
    • Experience producing/using viral vectors (e.g., lentivirus) and working under BSL-2 conditions.
    • Familiarity with gene manipulation workflows (e.g., CRISPR/siRNA).

    SALARY AND CONDITIONS
    The salary is determined by the collective agreement system of Finnish universities, aligning with the salary chart for expert and other personnel. The salary levels for a Research Technician are set at MV06-MV07. The average monthly salary, depending on previous experience and skills, is typically around 2 640 – 2 850 euros at the beginning of the employment. 

    The weekly working hours for full-time employees are 36 hours and 15 minutes. 

    A trial period applies to the position.

    We are seeking a highly motivated Research Technician / Laboratory Manager to join our collaborative, multidisciplinary research team. Our work focuses on understanding aging-related genetic changes in blood cells and their roles in immunology and cancer development. We integrate large population-level cohort analyses with cutting-edge genome editing and single-cell approaches in cell lines and in patient samples.


    The research group is led by Mikko Myllymäki, MD, PhD and our research group is located at the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM), University of Helsinki. We are also part of the Translational Immunology Research Program within the Faculty of Medicine. 

    The successful candidate will join a translational research environment integrating genetics, immunology, cell biology, bioinformatics, and clinical medicine.

    Key Responsibilities

    •    Perform and support routine wet-lab work (such as DNA and RNA based workflows, protein-based workflows, genotyping) 
    •    Culture and maintain leukemia cell lines and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) 
    •    Assist with sample logistics for single-cell workflows
    •    Coordinate laboratory reagent orders, maintain sample inventories, and take care of documentation 

    Comprehensive training will be provided for all techniques and responsibilities.

    The position is full-time and fixed-term for three years, with a possibility for extension. A six-month probationary period will be applied (standard in Finnish university employment contracts).

    We are seeking an accomplished Research Scientist to join the Cancer Genomics Research Team. The Research Scientist is a lab-based role focused on evaluating novel therapeutic targets and generating experimental evidence to support their advancement.     Doctoral Researcher 

    The successful candidate will work in the research group of Dr. Kari Vaahtomeri at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki.

    Scientific context

    IMMENs, composed of research groups at the University of Helsinki (director Dr. Taija Mäkinen and Dr. Kari Vaahtomeri) and Åbo Akademi in Turku (Dr. Cecilia Sahlgren and Dr. Guillaume Jacquemet), investigates the role of lymphatic vessel endothelium in controlling immune responses. Current evidence shows that much of immune regulation occurs locally at the site of inflammation. Recent studies have revealed important crosstalk between lymphatic endothelium and immune cells, resulting in phenotypic changes that control immune cell trafficking, fate and function. IMMENs will develop novel experimental approaches to uncover the mechanisms and therapeutic potential of lymphatic endothelial immunomodulation in homeostasis, inflammation and tumorigenesis using in vivo genetic mouse models, advanced live and intravital imaging, engineered microchip models, primary cell co-culture systems and novel microscopy and analysis methods. In this context, Vaahtomeri laboratory addresses fundamental cell biology mechanisms of cell migration/interactions.

    Who are we looking for

    We are looking for candidates with a strong background in life sciences (for example, cell biology, biochemistry or mouse models). The candidate should be highly motivated to investigate key open questions in the fields of:

    • Cell Biology
    • Vascular biology
    • Immunology

    At the pre-doctoral level, previous experience in cell biology, vascular biology, mouse models, immunology or high-end imaging approaches is considered an advantage. 

    Doctoral Researcher must obtain the right to pursue doctoral studies at the University of Helsinki within the trial period of six months.     The Hemato-oncology Research Group (HemoRES) at Faculty of Medicine and Health Technologyis looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow specializing in translational leukemia research. The position is full-time and will be filled for a fixed-term period until the end of 2028.

    The Hemato-oncology research group studies the molecular mechanisms underlying childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), aiming to develop novel, mechanism-based targeted therapies. Our approach combines a variety of genomic and molecular analyses, drug screening, patient samples, and disease modeling using both cellular and animal systems, including zebrafish.

    The Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology (MET) is committed to high quality research and education in the fields of biomedical engineering, biotechnology, medicine, and health technology. We conduct basic, applied, clinical, and translational research in collaboration with Tampere University Hospital (TAYS).     Job description

    We are looking for a talented and motivated postdoctoral researcher to join a project led by Prof. Olli Lohi. The project, funded by the Cancer Foundation Finland, focuses on developing targeted therapies for T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). Our research aims to identify novel and effective combination treatments for T-ALL, enhance immunotherapies, and investigate the mechanisms of drug resistance. The work involves the use of cell lines, patient samples, zebrafish models, and a variety of cellular, molecular, and genome-wide assays.

    Requirements

    We are seeking a versatile and independent researcher with experience and a proven track record-such as published work or a thesis-in a wide range of cellular and molecular biology techniques, including cell culture, drug testing, CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing, and data analysis (e.g., NGS data, R software). Prior experience with leukemia research or zebrafish experimentation would be appreciated.

    • Applicable doctoral degree in the field, e.g. Molecular and Cellular Biology, Immunology, Cancer Biology, or Genomics
    • High motivation and a strong research orientation
    • The ability to work independently, and stay current with relevant literature
    • Strong interpersonal and networking skills, along with a willingness to mentor junior researchers

    About the Role 

    Orion Pharma is making strategic investments in challenging R&D areas where our expertise can drive breakthroughs-particularly in cancer therapies. As part of this commitment, we are enhancing our oncology research capabilities by establishing dedicated Target Discovery teams within each of our oncology research units: Immuno-Oncology, Antibody Drug Conjugates (ADC), and Cancer Genomics. 

    We are looking for a motivated and skilled Senior Scientist to join Antibody-Drug Conjugates (ADC) Target Discovery Team. The ideal candidate has strong experience in preclinical cancer research and a solid background in cell and molecular cancer biology, with exposure to bioinformatics. 

    Key Responsibilities 

    • Design and execute strategies for identifying novel ADC targets using data-driven and lab-based approaches. 
    • Run ADC targets validation 
    • Conduct and/or coordinate experiments to assess ADC potency and safety. 
    • Provide expert guidance in cancer biology to project teams. 
    • Collaborate with internal teams (bioinformatics, chemistry, biology, pharmacology, clinical) to solve scientific challenges. 
    • Propose and manage research activities with strategic partners, CROs, and academic collaborators. 
    • Maintain detailed lab records and documentation. 
    • Analyse experimental data and present findings in meetings. 

    You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to discover and validate novel cancer targets and help develop first- or best-in-class ADCs from concept to clinical candidate.     Essential competences, education and way of working : 

    • MS, or PhD in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry or closely related field with typically 10+ (MS) or 4+ (PhD) years of postdoc or industry related experience. 
    • Strong understanding and experience of cancer biology, cell and molecular biology, and biochemistry. 
    • Practical experience with bioinformatics and omics data (transcriptomics, proteomics, spatial data) and analysis (e.g. online tools, R or Python). 
    • Hands-on experience with lab techniques: cell surface proteins labelling and analysis, flow cytometry, microscopy, cytotoxicity assays, qPCR, western blotting, and ELISA. 
    • Experience with 2D and 3D cell culture models. 
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently and lead research activities. 
    • Strong interest in adopting new technologies and methods.

    Job description

    The Department of Biological and Environmental Science is seeking to recruit a Doctoral Researcher in Cell and Molecular Biology starting 1st of September 2025 or as soon as possible after that for a maximum of four years. The fixed-term position is for completing doctoral studies.

    Understanding the intranuclear mechanisms of herpesvirus reactivation and its effects on host chromatin structure and dynamics is essential for both basic research and the development of oncolytic virus therapies and novel antivirals that prevent virus reactivation. This PhD project aims to refine our understanding of the mechanisms underlying virus reactivation and the roles of chromatin organization and phase separation in this process. The project is part of an Academy Fellowship funded by the Research Council of Finland, titled ”The role of DNA positioning and interactions in herpesvirus reactivation.” The research will be conducted at the University of Jyväskylä using a multidisciplinary approach that combines cell biology and biophysics with advanced imaging techniques, protein structure prediction algorithms, and biophysical modeling. The project will be carried out in collaboration with the Vihinen-Ranta research group (https://mvr-lab.org) and international partners. Both the research and imaging facilities at the University of Jyväskylä and those of our collaborators in Europe and the USA will be utilized. 

    Who we are looking for

    We are looking for a skilled and motivated PhD candidate with a relevant Master’s degree (e.g., in biochemistry, molecular medicine, or cell and molecular biology). Previous experience in virus research, confocal laser scanning microscopy, and image analysis is considered an advantage. Strong teamwork skills and motivation for scientific research are essential.

    The tasks of a Doctoral Researcher focus on research aiming at the completion of a doctoral thesis, doctoral studies, assisting teaching tasks, and other related tasks to these. The duties, qualification requirements, and the language skills of Doctoral Researchers are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines (Doctoral Students). A good command of English is required. A trial period of six months will be used in the beginning of the employment.

    The eligible candidate has, or is about to obtain, a suitable Master’s degree. In addition, the Doctoral Researcher must have a permission for post-graduate studies at the University of Jyväskylä. If the applicant does not have permission for post-graduate studies, it must be applied with a separate application procedure from the Faculty of Mathematics and Science after selection for the position.
