Description of position

We are looking for an experienced Research Assistant/Associate to be based in the R&D laboratories in Turku. This is a hands-on position for an experienced Assistant/Associate who enjoys working in the lab. You will be part of the Cancer Genomics team, but work in close collaboration with the other research organisations of Orion. You will have an opportunity to be part of a highly motivated and international team and work in modern laboratory facilities equipped with state-of-art laboratory instrumentation. This is a permanent position and location is Turku, Finland.

Main responsibilities:

  • Provide research support for in vitro cell based assays, biochemical assays and molecular biology assays (such as qPCR, WB and/or cell imaging)
  • Independently maintain and perform studies with mammalian cell cultures
  • Determine the potency and mechanism of action of small molecule compounds
  • Be responsible for the accurate documentation of research and screening results
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping and take responsibility of routine laboratory and cell culture maintenance tasks

Oncology Research is accountable for the discovery of novel targets and research projects in the therapy area of oncology at Orion. Cancer Genomics team is one of the four research teams in Oncology Research, and our teams build the R&D Oncology portfolio and Oncology strategy in close collaboration with business and all R&D global functions.

A successful applicant has several years of experience in hands-on laboratory work and techniques related to cellular and biochemical assays, for example in running high throughput screens as well as common molecular biology techniques (RNA/DNA/protein isolations and analysis, and/or immunoassays). Previous strong knowledge and experience working with mammalian cell cultures and related functional studies (for example transfections, reporter assays) is required.

Additionally, we expect that you have a suitable degree in the field of health sciences, for example from University of Applied Sciences. You are highly motivated, possess interpersonal and organizational skills that allow you to interact in a collaborative work environment. You also have basic computational skills, ideally experience in documentation using electronic lab notebook, and are able to communicate in verbal and written English. Industry experience is an advantage, but not a requirement.

Åbo Akademi University, funded by the European Commission Horizon 2020 project Tumor Lymph Node on Chip for cancer studies (Tumor-LN-oC, https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/953234), invites applications for a fixed-term research technician position in the field of cell and molecular biology for a period of three years starting June 7th 2021, the COVID-19 situation permitting. The position is full time. The work will be performed within the framework of the innovation ecosystem InFLAMES (https://inflames.utu.fi/). The InFLAMES Flagship aims at identifying drug targets, developing technological platforms and finding diagnostic tools to tackle diseases related to or controlled by the immune system. 


The position will be seated at the Sahlgren group, the Cell Fate Lab (http://cellfatelab.github.io/), Subject of Cell Biology, Faculty of Science and Engineering in Turku, Finland. The Tumor-LN-oC project is an international collaboration aiming at creating a novel model system to study metastasis of cancer cells from primary tumors into lymph nodes. At the Cell Fate Lab, the project aims include optimization of a co-culture system and characterization of metastasizing cells. Importantly, the research technician will support the everyday work of the Cell Fate Lab (altogether 15-20 researchers and students) in addition to taking part in implementation of the Tumor-LN-oC project. 


The work tasks include:

  • Preparation of buffers and reagent solutions, aliquoting of chemicals, casting of agar plates, production of plasmid preps and handling other similar support functions to enable researchers to concentrate on experimental work.
  • Handling day-to-day material orders, from various local and international sources. Gatekeeping of duplicate purchases. Handling product arrivals, managing storage spaces and keeping inventory.
  • Providing technical support to the lab members and taking part in trouble-shooting.
  • Organization and coordination of lab cleaning schedules (cell culture facilities, general laboratory spaces, freezers and fridges, storage spaces) and guidance of the group members with shared lab management tasks.


Essential qualifications

  • A polytechnic level degree for biomedical laboratory scientist, laboratory technician or equivalent or a BSc or MSc degree in the field of biosciences.
  • Experience with various wet lab techniques, e.g. cell culture. Ability to provide technical support, ideas and solutions when faced with a problem.
  • Familiarity with MS office programs and the related environment.

Desirable attributes

  • Strong interpersonal and team work skills, including fluent written and oral communication in English and knowledge of Swedish. Foreigners and non-native Finnish citizens can be exempted from the requirement to have knowledge of Swedish.
  • Approachable and flexible, understanding but firm, not afraid to ask questions and report problems. 
  • Organizational skills and attention to details.
  • Time management skills. Ability to prioritize and take initiative.

Forskningsteknikern kommer huvudsakligen att stöda det dagliga arbetet vid Cell Fate Lab (totalt 15-20 forskare och studerande) förutom att delta i genomförandet av Tumor-LN-oC-projektet.


I arbetsuppgifterna ingår:

  • att bereda buffert- och reagenslösningar, alikvotera kemikalier, göra agarplattor, producera plasmider och liknande stödfunktioner för att underlätta för forskarna att koncentrera sig på experimentellt arbete
  • att sköta dagliga materialbeställningar från olika lokala och internationella leverantörer, att undvika dubbelinköp, att ta emot produktleveranser, sköta lagerutrymmen och inventera
  • att ge tekniskt stöd till laboratoriets medlemmar och delta i problemlösning
  • att organisera och koordinera städscheman för laboratoriet (lokaler med cellkulturer, allmänna laboratorieutrymmen, frysar och kylskåp, förvaringsutrymmen) och att handleda gruppmedlemmarna i skötsel av laboratoriet


  • en yrkeshögskoleexamen som biomedicinsk laboratorietekniker, laboratorietekniker eller motsvarande eller en kandidat- eller magisterexamen inom biovetenskap 
  • erfarenhet av olika våtlabbtekniker, t.ex. cellkulturer. Förmåga att ge tekniskt stöd, komma med idéer och lösningar på problem
  • kunskaper i MS Office-program

Meriterande för anställningen

  • bra samarbetsförmåga samt flytande kunskaper i engelska och kunskaper i svenska. Utländska eller finska medborgare som inte är infödda kan befrias från kravet på kunskaper i svenska

Suomen Funktionaalisen Genomiikan Keskus on ydinpalveluyksikkö, joka kuuluu kansalliseen Biokeskus Suomi infrastruktuuriverkostoon. Tuemme korkeatasoista tutkimusta tarjoamalla avoimen pääsyn viimeisimpiin alan huippua edustaviin teknologioihin ja palveluihin genomiikan alalla. Tällä hetkellä tärkeimmät palvelumme ovat uudensukupolven sekvensointiin perustuvat genomin, transkriptomin ja epigenomin analyysit eri menetelmillä. Palveluidemme käyttäjiä ovat akateemiset yksiköt, valtion tutkimusyksiköt, terveydenhuollon tutkimusyksiköt sekä yritykset. Genomiikan keskus sijaitsee Turun Biotiedekeskuksessa, joka on Turun Yliopiston ja Åbo Akademin yhteinen erillislaitos. Toimimme läheisessä yhteistyössä useiden kansainvälisten ja kansallisten sidosryhmien kanssa.

Etsimme nyt tiimimme projektitutkijaa tukemaan uusien menetelmien käyttöönottoa tutkimuspalveluita varten sekä koordinoimaan tutkimusprojekteja. Avaintehtäviin kuuluu uusien protokollien kehittäminen ja käyttöönotto, verifiointi tai validointi ja yksikössä toteutettavien tutkimus- ja palveluprojektien tukeminen ja koordinointi, kuten koeasetelman suunnittelu, budjetointi, näytteiden prosessointi, tulosten analysointi ja tulkinta ja raportointi läheisessä yhteistyössä ydinpalveluyksikön henkilöstön ja sidosryhmien kanssa.

Tehtävä vaatii erinomaisia yhteistyötaitoja, kommunikaatiotaitoja englanniksi, vahvaa molekyylibiologian ja genomiikan osaamista, erinomaisia laboratoriotaitoja ja kykyä suurta tarkkuutta vaativaan laboratoriotyöhön. Ydinpalveluyksikkö tarjoaa asiantuntija tukea ja palvelua jatkuvasti kehittyvillä alan huippumenetelmillä. Siksi tehtävä vaatii myös joustavaa ja avointa asennetta sekä motivaatiota oppia jatkuvasti uutta ja kykyä sopeutua nopeisiin muutoksiin ja jatkuvasti kehittyvään tutkimusympäristöön. Tehtävä vaatii myös laatujärjestelmä osaamista, johon tarjotaan myös koulutus. Aiempi kokemus laatujärjestelmästä katsotaan hakijalle eduksi.

Hakijalla tulee olla tehtävään sopiva alan koulutus. Tehtävän kesto on yksi vuosi kuuden kuukauden koeajalla. Saattaa myös olla, että tehtävälle on tarvetta jatkossa. Palkka määräytyy Suomen yliopistojen työehtosopimuksen mukaisesti. Tehtävä sijoittuu opetus-ja tutkimushenkilöstön henkilöstöryhmään. Riippuen koulutus- ja kokemustasosta sekä muusta osaamisesta palkka on keskimäärin 2200 – 2500 eur / kk.

We are looking for a Doctoral student in Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine for a part-time (50%), fixed-term two-year position at the University of Oulu at the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine.


This research project focuses on the interplay between hypoxia signalling, metabolism and fibrosis. The selected student will work under supervision of professors Peppi Karppinen and Terhi Piltonen. The aim of the project is to reveal the causality and relations between these pathways using the sex-hormone driven polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) as a disease model. This is a common syndrome in women affecting about 10% the female population. Fibrosis in liver, ovary and adipose tissue is associated with PCOS and may contribute to high comorbidity among affected women. Our main interests are the hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) and its regulating HIF prolyl 4-hydroxylases. We use mainly molecular and cell biology methods as well as gene-modified mice and preclinical disease models to understand how these pathways interact. This is a project with multidisciplinary approach aiming to answer important clinical questions. To successfully occupy the position, the candidate must possess a degree entitling them to obtain a doctoral degree (MSc or equivalent) preferably in the field of biochemistry, molecular or cell biology, medical sciences or related fields. Degree must have been completed before starting the position and must not be obtained more than 5 years ago. License to conduct animal experiments within the EU is required (proven by a course diploma showing competence according to EU Directive 2010/63, Article 23). Prior experience on animal experiments, preclinical disease models and knowledge on molecular and cellular biology as well as histological and imaging methods are an advantage. Ability to pursue independent research, work productively in a team as well as excellent writing and fluency in English are expected.

When assessing the applicant’s qualifications, issues to be considered will include study grades, research experience, possible scientific publications, activity in the scientific community, familiarity with the research field and teamwork skills. The applicant is expected to actively take part in co-applying for funding during the two-year period.
