Åbo Akademi University, funded by the European Commission Horizon 2020 project Tumor Lymph Node on Chip for cancer studies (Tumor-LN-oC, https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/953234), invites applications for a fixed-term research technician position in the field of cell and molecular biology for a period of three years starting June 7th 2021, the COVID-19 situation permitting. The position is full time. The work will be performed within the framework of the innovation ecosystem InFLAMES (https://inflames.utu.fi/). The InFLAMES Flagship aims at identifying drug targets, developing technological platforms and finding diagnostic tools to tackle diseases related to or controlled by the immune system. 

Background

The position will be seated at the Sahlgren group, the Cell Fate Lab (http://cellfatelab.github.io/), Subject of Cell Biology, Faculty of Science and Engineering in Turku, Finland. The Tumor-LN-oC project is an international collaboration aiming at creating a novel model system to study metastasis of cancer cells from primary tumors into lymph nodes. At the Cell Fate Lab, the project aims include optimization of a co-culture system and characterization of metastasizing cells. Importantly, the research technician will support the everyday work of the Cell Fate Lab (altogether 15-20 researchers and students) in addition to taking part in implementation of the Tumor-LN-oC project. 

WORK TASKS

The work tasks include:

  • Preparation of buffers and reagent solutions, aliquoting of chemicals, casting of agar plates, production of plasmid preps and handling other similar support functions to enable researchers to concentrate on experimental work.
  • Handling day-to-day material orders, from various local and international sources. Gatekeeping of duplicate purchases. Handling product arrivals, managing storage spaces and keeping inventory.
  • Providing technical support to the lab members and taking part in trouble-shooting.
  • Organization and coordination of lab cleaning schedules (cell culture facilities, general laboratory spaces, freezers and fridges, storage spaces) and guidance of the group members with shared lab management tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential qualifications

  • A polytechnic level degree for biomedical laboratory scientist, laboratory technician or equivalent or a BSc or MSc degree in the field of biosciences.
  • Experience with various wet lab techniques, e.g. cell culture. Ability to provide technical support, ideas and solutions when faced with a problem.
  • Familiarity with MS office programs and the related environment.

Desirable attributes

  • Strong interpersonal and team work skills, including fluent written and oral communication in English and knowledge of Swedish. Foreigners and non-native Finnish citizens can be exempted from the requirement to have knowledge of Swedish.
  • Approachable and flexible, understanding but firm, not afraid to ask questions and report problems. 
  • Organizational skills and attention to details.
  • Time management skills. Ability to prioritize and take initiative.

Bakgrund

Anställningen är placerad i Sahlgrens forskningsgrupp, the Cell Fate Lab (http://cellfatelab.github.io/), vid ämnet cellbiologi vid Fakulteten för naturvetenskaper och teknik i Åbo, Finland. Projektet Tumor-LN-oC utgör ett internationellt samarbete med målet att skapa ett nytt system för att studera metastaser av cancerceller från primärtumörer till lymfkörtlar. Vid Cell Fate Lab har projektet som mål att optimera ett co-kultursystem och karakterisera metastaserande celler. Forskningsteknikern kommer huvudsakligen att stöda det dagliga arbetet vid Cell Fate Lab (totalt 15-20 forskare och studerande) förutom att delta i genomförandet av Tumor-LN-oC-projektet.

ARBETSUPPGIFTER

I arbetsuppgifterna ingår:

  • att bereda buffert- och reagenslösningar, alikvotera kemikalier, göra agarplattor, producera plasmider och liknande stödfunktioner för att underlätta för forskarna att koncentrera sig på experimentellt arbete
  • att sköta dagliga materialbeställningar från olika lokala och internationella leverantörer, att undvika dubbelinköp, att ta emot produktleveranser, sköta lagerutrymmen och inventera
  • att ge tekniskt stöd till laboratoriets medlemmar och delta i problemlösning
  • att organisera och koordinera städscheman för laboratoriet (lokaler med cellkulturer, allmänna laboratorieutrymmen, frysar och kylskåp, förvaringsutrymmen) och att handleda gruppmedlemmarna i skötsel av laboratoriet

KOMPETENS

  • en yrkeshögskoleexamen som biomedicinsk laboratorietekniker, laboratorietekniker eller motsvarande eller en kandidat- eller magisterexamen inom biovetenskap 
  • erfarenhet av olika våtlabbtekniker, t.ex. cellkulturer. Förmåga att ge tekniskt stöd, komma med idéer och lösningar på problem
  • kunskaper i MS Office-program

Suomen Funktionaalisen Genomiikan Keskus on ydinpalveluyksikkö, joka kuuluu kansalliseen Biokeskus Suomi infrastruktuuriverkostoon. Tuemme korkeatasoista tutkimusta tarjoamalla avoimen pääsyn viimeisimpiin alan huippua edustaviin teknologioihin ja palveluihin genomiikan alalla. Tällä hetkellä tärkeimmät palvelumme ovat uudensukupolven sekvensointiin perustuvat genomin, transkriptomin ja epigenomin analyysit eri menetelmillä. Palveluidemme käyttäjiä ovat akateemiset yksiköt, valtion tutkimusyksiköt, terveydenhuollon tutkimusyksiköt sekä yritykset. Genomiikan keskus sijaitsee Turun Biotiedekeskuksessa, joka on Turun Yliopiston ja Åbo Akademin yhteinen erillislaitos. Toimimme läheisessä yhteistyössä useiden kansainvälisten ja kansallisten sidosryhmien kanssa.

Etsimme nyt tiimimme projektitutkijaa tukemaan uusien menetelmien käyttöönottoa tutkimuspalveluita varten sekä koordinoimaan tutkimusprojekteja. Avaintehtäviin kuuluu uusien protokollien kehittäminen ja käyttöönotto, verifiointi tai validointi ja yksikössä toteutettavien tutkimus- ja palveluprojektien tukeminen ja koordinointi, kuten koeasetelman suunnittelu, budjetointi, näytteiden prosessointi, tulosten analysointi ja tulkinta ja raportointi läheisessä yhteistyössä ydinpalveluyksikön henkilöstön ja sidosryhmien kanssa.

Tehtävä vaatii erinomaisia yhteistyötaitoja, kommunikaatiotaitoja englanniksi, vahvaa molekyylibiologian ja genomiikan osaamista, erinomaisia laboratoriotaitoja ja kykyä suurta tarkkuutta vaativaan laboratoriotyöhön. Ydinpalveluyksikkö tarjoaa asiantuntija tukea ja palvelua jatkuvasti kehittyvillä alan huippumenetelmillä. Siksi tehtävä vaatii myös joustavaa ja avointa asennetta sekä motivaatiota oppia jatkuvasti uutta ja kykyä sopeutua nopeisiin muutoksiin ja jatkuvasti kehittyvään tutkimusympäristöön. Tehtävä vaatii myös laatujärjestelmä osaamista, johon tarjotaan myös koulutus. Aiempi kokemus laatujärjestelmästä katsotaan hakijalle eduksi.

Hakijalla tulee olla tehtävään sopiva alan koulutus. Tehtävän kesto on yksi vuosi kuuden kuukauden koeajalla. Saattaa myös olla, että tehtävälle on tarvetta jatkossa. Palkka määräytyy Suomen yliopistojen työehtosopimuksen mukaisesti. Tehtävä sijoittuu opetus-ja tutkimushenkilöstön henkilöstöryhmään. Riippuen koulutus- ja kokemustasosta sekä muusta osaamisesta palkka on keskimäärin 2200 – 2500 eur / kk.

We are looking for a Doctoral student in Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine for a part-time (50%), fixed-term two-year position at the University of Oulu at the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine.

Project

This research project focuses on the interplay between hypoxia signalling, metabolism and fibrosis. The selected student will work under supervision of professors Peppi Karppinen and Terhi Piltonen. The aim of the project is to reveal the causality and relations between these pathways using the sex-hormone driven polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) as a disease model. This is a common syndrome in women affecting about 10% the female population. Fibrosis in liver, ovary and adipose tissue is associated with PCOS and may contribute to high comorbidity among affected women. Our main interests are the hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) and its regulating HIF prolyl 4-hydroxylases. We use mainly molecular and cell biology methods as well as gene-modified mice and preclinical disease models to understand how these pathways interact. This is a project with multidisciplinary approach aiming to answer important clinical questions. Requirements

To successfully occupy the position, the candidate must possess a degree entitling them to obtain a doctoral degree (MSc or equivalent) preferably in the field of biochemistry, molecular or cell biology, medical sciences or related fields. Degree must have been completed before starting the position and must not be obtained more than 5 years ago. License to conduct animal experiments within the EU is required (proven by a course diploma showing competence according to EU Directive 2010/63, Article 23). Prior experience on animal experiments, preclinical disease models and knowledge on molecular and cellular biology as well as histological and imaging methods are an advantage. Ability to pursue independent research, work productively in a team as well as excellent writing and fluency in English are expected.

When assessing the applicant’s qualifications, issues to be considered will include study grades, research experience, possible scientific publications, activity in the scientific community, familiarity with the research field and teamwork skills. The applicant is expected to actively take part in co-applying for funding during the two-year period.

Tulet keskeiseen rooliin vastaamaan soluvapaan DNA:n verinäytteiden käsittelyyn liittyvän tuotteen kehitystyöstä. Patentoidun ratkaisumme osa-alueiden prototyypit ovat olemassa ja olemme siirtymässä testauksen kautta kohti tuotannollistamista.  

Käytännössä tehtäviisi tulee kuulumaan ensi vaiheessa tuotteen IPR-portfolion laajentaminen, kehitystyön loppuun vieminen, kaupallisen prototyypin kehitys, markkinaselvitysten teko ja tuotteen saattaminen markkinoille. 

Projektiin osallistuu laboratoriohenkilöstömme ja toimitusjohtajamme, jolle myös raportoit.

Role and salary

As our new Postdoctoral or Project Researcher in Biomedical NMR, you will be working in the A.I. Virtanen Institute at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Kuopio Campus.

The Metabolic MRI group at the University of Eastern Finland is aiming to develop hyperpolarisation-based methods for metabolic magnetic resonance imaging. The applicant will be working in a neuroimaging project, aimed to image stroke and other neurological models at high (3T) and low (0.6T) magnetic fields. The project will improve the understanding of the metabolism of hyperpolarised marker molecules (e.g. pyruvate) during stroke and help establish the experimental basis for further development of hyperpolarized low-field MRI. The researcher will join a group currently including 2 PhD students and the Research Director. In addition to collaborations within Finland, the project involves collaborations with research groups in Denmark and Italy.

The successful candidate will hold a suitable doctoral degree. If you have been awarded your doctoral degree less than five years ago, the post will be one of a Postdoctoral Researcher. If the doctoral degree has been awarded more than five years ago, the post will be one of a Project Researcher. In this context, the 5 years refer to a net period time, which does not include maternity leaves, parental leaves, or military service.

The position will be filled for a two-year term from 1 May 2021 (or as agreed). The position will be filled for a fixed term due to it pertaining to a specific project. A probationary period is applied to all new members of the staff.

The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system of the Finnish universities. The salary comprises two components: a job requirement component and a personal performance component. In this position, the job requirement component is 2,967.84 euros/month, based on level 5 of the job requirement chart for teaching and research staff. The personal performance component can be a minimum of 6 % and a maximum of 50 % of the above-mentioned sum.At the beginning the salary will be 3 267,59 – 3 626,70 e.

Professor Heli Skottman’s eye group develops novel human stem cell-based tools for the corneal and retinal repair through cell transplantation and ophthalmic in vitro tissue models that can be used to model human specific eye disorders. The research group was the first to create parts of human corneas using 3D bioprinting technology and currently group is developing this emerging technology with aim to 3D bioprint full-thickness human corneas for therapeutic applications with fight against cornea blindness.

Job description 

The post-doctoral position will focus on molecular and functional analyses of human stem cell derived corneal cells produced with innovative methods created by the group, in vitro ophthalmic disease modeling with these cells as well as molecular and functional characterization of novel 3D bioprinted corneal structures.

The candidate will gain expertise in working with multidisciplinary and international research area and supervision of younger researchers and students. The research group fully support also with establishment of independent research pathway in future.

Requirements 

We are seeking outstanding candidates who have a track record of internationally significant research in molecular cell biology. In addition, knowledge on human stem cells and eye tissue biology is preferred but not obligatory.

Professori Heli Skottmanin silmätutkimusryhmä kehittää ihmisen kantasoluista uusia kudosteknologisia hoitomuotoja silmän verkkokalvon ja sarveiskalvon sairauksien ja vammojen hoitoon, sekä menetelmiä silmäsairauksien solubiologiseen mallintamiseen. Tutkimusryhmä on saavuttanut kansainvälistä mainetta mm. tutkimuksellaan, jossa he 3D biotulostivat ensimmäisenä maailmassa ihmisen sarveiskalvon uloimpia rakenteita. Parhaillaan tutkimusryhmä edelleen kehittää tätä teknologiaa ja heidän tavoitteenansa on hyödyntää sitä ihmisen sarveiskalvojen kliinisessä tuotannossa tulevaisuudessa. 

Tehtävänkuvaus

Tehtävään valittu tulee keskittymään tutkimuksessaan ihmisen kantasoluista tuotettujen sarveiskalvon solujen molekyylibiologisiin ja toiminnallisiin analyyseihin, in vitro tautimallinnukseen tuotettujen solujen avulla sekä 3D biotulostettujen sarveiskalvorakenteinen molekyylibiologisiin ja toiminnallisiin analyyseihin.

Tehtävässä saa tutkimuskokemusta monitieteisessä kansainvälisessä tutkimuksessa sekä kokemusta nuorenpien tutkijoiden sekä opiskelijoiden ohjauksessa. Tutkimusryhmä tarjoaa valitulle myös vahvan tuen oman tutkimusuran kehittämiseen tulevaisuudessa.

Edellytykset

Etsimme erinomaisia hakijoita, joilla on vahva näyttö kansainvälisesti korkeatasoisesta tutkimuksesta molekulaarisen solubiologian alalta. Tämän lisäksi kokemus ihmisen kantasoluista sekä silmän kudosbiologiasta katsotaan eduksi, joskaan ei välttämättömäksi.

As our company continues to grow, we are looking for a Touchpoint Specialist to join our Customer Experience team in Keilaniemi, Espoo. This is a permanent, full-time position.

Job Description

Placing an order and receiving the final product are key touchpoints in the customer journey, and designing these processes will be the main focus for the new Touchpoint Specialist. In this position, you will play an important role in making sure we continue delivering the exceptional customer experience we offer today and developing it further. You will work on ordering and delivering touchpoint concepts, logistics, and development. You will update the global customer-facing teams about the new features as well as provide technical expertise that enables them to successfully introduce the touchpoints to our customers. Together with our CX & Brand team, you will co-create touchpoint-related content eg, printed and digital materials, product training presentations, website texts, and other touchpoint-related materials. You will suggest touchpoints enhancements to improve the customer experience by performing market and competitor analysis as well as collecting internal and external feedback. Ultimately, you act as the champion of our touchpoints.

Your main tasks will include:

  • Developing and maintaining the ordering and reporting touchpoints and processes together with CX, Client Services and Production Services, Sales, and Marketing
  • Using customer insights and market analysis to define touchpoints requirements
  • Working as a gatekeeper of the changes and maintenance of the steps of the buying journey
  • Ensuring order forms, kits and reports are on par with the CX/Brand promise (CX, scientific, quality and accessible)
  • Coordinating cross-functional projects and following up on tasks, schedules and targets during specific projects
  • Developing and implementing the ordering and reporting processes through service design thinking approach
  • Ensuring all work is performed in compliance with company policies/QMS including Privacy/HIPAA and other regulatory, legal, and safety requirements.

The ideal candidate has:

  • At least 2 years of work experience in a similar position, preferably in healthcare, service design or product management
  • Preferably MSc in Business, Marketing, Biosciences or other relevant fields of studies
  • Good understanding of the ordering and delivering processes of products and services
  • Desire to learn and understand the genetic testing market, the science behind it as well as the brand
  • Ability to reliably deliver multiple projects on strict deadlines with strong attention to detail and focus on quality
  • Research and analytical mindset with the ability to draw conclusions and turn them into concrete actions
  • Ability to work autonomously
  • Adept at seeing change as an opportunity to improve business performance, and campaigning for it when necessary
  • Strong commercial design, marketing, presentation and project management skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong collaboration and team-working skills and experience from a cross-functional role
