Job Description

We are seeking an accomplished Research Scientist to join the Cancer Genomics Research Team. The Research Scientist is a lab-based role focused on evaluating novel therapeutic targets and generating experimental evidence to support their advancement. This position combines scientific rigor with hands-on expertise to drive cancer genomics research forward. The ideal candidate will have a strong track record in target identification and validation, preferably within the small molecule space. 

Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Validation

  • Plan and execute laboratory experiments to validate and interrogate selected targets using state-of-the-art molecular and cellular techniques, along with undertaking Mechanism of Action studies.
  • Ensure experimental design meets high standards of reproducibility and scientific integrity.

Data Analysis & Reporting

  • Analyze and interpret experimental results to inform target and project progression.
  • Document findings and communicate outcomes effectively in reports and team meetings.

Collaboration

  • Work closely with bioinformatics, translational research, and other cross-functional teams to integrate data-driven insights into validation and project strategies.

You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to discover and validate novel cancer targets and help develop first- or best-in-class targets from concept to clinical candidate. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge cancer therapies that can make a real difference for patients.

You will be located in Turku, Finland, and will report to the Head of Cancer Genomics team. The role is full-time and on-site, with a fixed-term contract until the end of July 2027.

What are we looking for? 

Key Qualifications

  • Fresh Ph.D. (0-2 years of experience) in Molecular Biology, Cancer Genomics, Genetics, or related field 
    OR 
  • Master’s degree with 5-6 years of hands-on laboratory experience in oncology research or functional genomics.
  • Strong expertise in cell culture, molecular biology, and assay development.
  • Experience with CRISPR-based gene editing and functional screening.
  • Experience with RNAi, lentiviral systems, overexpression systems, and knockout cellular models.
  • Proficiency in cell-based and biochemical assays, imaging, and high-throughput screening.
  • Ability to design and execute complex experiments independently.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills.

Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with computational biology tools and pipelines for target discovery.
  • Knowledge of tumor biology and resistance mechanisms.
  • Strong ability to interpret large-scale datasets and integrate insights into experimental design.
  • Prior experience in pharma or biotech environments with drug discovery exposure is a plus.

University of Helsinki, Faculty of Medicine invites applications for the position of 

Doctoral Researcher 

in the Cancer Data Science group led by Associate Professor Mariike Kuijjer, at the iCAN Flagship in Digital Precision Cancer Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki. 

The position is funded through a project by the Sigrid Jusélius Foundation titled “Regulatory determinants of metastatic progression in high-grade serous ovarian cancer.” The ideal starting date is summer or early fall 2026, but this is flexible and can be discussed. The appointment is a full-time position and is made for a period of three years with possible extension depending on future funding.


Our research

The Kuijjer group was established in 2018 at the University of Oslo and expanded to the University of Helsinki in 2025. The group focuses on developing computational and data science approaches to increase our understanding of gene regulation and how rewiring of gene regulatory networks can influence cancer development, progression, and disease heterogeneity. The group’s current projects use network science and artificial intelligence to develop tools that (i) integrate multi-modal data, (ii) model gene regulation at increased genomic and cellular resolution, (iii) refine the analysis of genome-wide regulatory networks. About the role

The advertised project aims to identify regulatory determinants of ovarian cancer progression through regulatory network modeling and analysis. The selected candidate will apply and extend network modeling approaches developed in the Kuijjer group to model patient- and cell type-specific gene regulatory networks using bulk and single-cell ovarian cancer data. These networks will be analyzed to define patient-specific regulatory heterogeneity in primary ovarian cancer, identify regulatory rewiring that drives metastatic progression, characterize the regulatory mechanisms modulated by therapeutic pressure, and assess how these programs relate to therapy response. The project will leverage various publicly available datasets as well as data from the in-house Oncosys-OVA study led by our collaborator Prof. Anniina Färkkilä, University of Helsinki. Overall, the project combines methodological development with biological discovery, offering opportunities to contribute both to computational innovation and to mechanistic insights into ovarian cancer progression.


The candidate

We seek a highly motivated candidate with strong computational skills in the field of high-throughput omics data analysis, comparative genomics, functional genomics, or related fields. The candidate is excited about applying computational tools to answer questions in cancer research. They are collaborative and creative, and have strong programming skills dedicated to the analysis of large-scale genomics data. Experience with the analysis of omics data is required for this position. Knowledge of cancer biology is a strong advantage. Experience with high-performance computing, genomic data integration, biological network analysis, and/or gene regulation is desirable, but not required.

The position is open to applicants with a Master’s degree in computational biology, bioinformatics, biostatistics, cancer genomics, network science, or related fields. Candidates who are finishing their Master’s thesis are also welcome to apply. The successful candidate will work in the research group of Dr. Kari Vaahtomeri at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki.

Scientific context

IMMENs, composed of research groups at the University of Helsinki (director Dr. Taija Mäkinen and Dr. Kari Vaahtomeri) and Åbo Akademi in Turku (Dr. Cecilia Sahlgren and Dr. Guillaume Jacquemet), investigates the role of lymphatic vessel endothelium in controlling immune responses. Current evidence shows that much of immune regulation occurs locally at the site of inflammation. Recent studies have revealed important crosstalk between lymphatic endothelium and immune cells, resulting in phenotypic changes that control immune cell trafficking, fate and function. IMMENs will develop novel experimental approaches to uncover the mechanisms and therapeutic potential of lymphatic endothelial immunomodulation in homeostasis, inflammation and tumorigenesis using in vivo genetic mouse models, advanced live and intravital imaging, engineered microchip models, primary cell co-culture systems and novel microscopy and analysis methods. In this context, Vaahtomeri laboratory addresses fundamental cell biology mechanisms of cell migration/interactions.

Who are we looking for

We are looking for candidates with a strong background in life sciences (for example, cell biology, biochemistry or mouse models). The candidate should be highly motivated to investigate key open questions in the fields of:

  • Cell Biology
  • Vascular biology
  • Immunology

At the pre-doctoral level, previous experience in cell biology, vascular biology, mouse models, immunology or high-end imaging approaches is considered an advantage. 

Doctoral Researcher must obtain the right to pursue doctoral studies at the University of Helsinki within the trial period of six months. Candidates should be able to demonstrate abstract thinking as well as the potential to develop and pursue scientific projects in the fields relevant for this call. Salary and trial period

The salary is determined in accordance with the university salary system for other personnel. Gross salary, based on previous experience and skills, is approximately 3100 – 3600 euros/month at the beginning of the assignment.

The duties include coordination of the daily operations of TuProtCore, organizing the TuProtCore steering committee activities,  representation of all core facilities in scientific events and support in funding applications.  Very important part of work is outreaching to new academic and industrial customers, agreement negotiations and maintenance of the business relations with the existing and new customers.

Salary and trial period

The salary is determined in accordance with the university salary system for other personnel / teaching and research personnel. The job requirement level of the position is MV08-MV09.  In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance is paid. Salary, based on previous experience and skills, is approximately 3100 – 3600 euros/month at the beginning of the assignment.

The start of the employment is negotiable, preferably by May 2026. The position is fixed-term for two years, with a possibility for extension depending on the funding decisions. The position is subject to a six-month trial period.

About the role

We are looking for a Production Manager to lead our primary production of functional mushrooms. In this role, you will be responsible for the end-to-end cultivation process, ensuring high-quality raw materials for further processing into health-promoting products.

 We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Assistant with mass spectrometry experience to join the Antibody-Drug Conjugates (ADC) Team. This is a hands-on laboratory role ideal for someone who enjoys experimental work and thrives in a collaborative research environment. You will be part of a dynamic, international team working in modern facilities equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation.

This is fixed-term on-site position for two years. The candidate would ideally start working in August 2026. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Support research activities by performing sample preparation for proteomics analysis, in vitro cell-based assays, biochemical assays, and molecular biology techniques including flow cytometry (FACS), immunofluorescence staining and cell imaging, Western blotting (WB), quantitative PCR (qPCR), and antibody labelling. 
  • Support discovery and verification of novel proteoforms. 
  • Independently maintain and conduct experiments using mammalian cell cultures. 
  • Assess the potency of antibody-drug conjugates and free payloads. 
  • Evaluate antibody binding, surface protein density, and internalization in vitro. 
  • Accurately document experimental procedures and results using electronic lab notebooks. 
  • Ensure high standards of laboratory housekeeping and contribute to routine maintenance of lab and cell culture facilities. 

The role is based in Turku, Finland, and will report to the ADC Target Discovery Lead.

  • Hands-on experience with LC-MS/MS
