We are now looking for a highly motivated Doctoral Student to join the research group of Daniela Ungureanu to work on a project focused to understand the molecular basis of omental metastasis in ovarian cancer. The research project is carried out under Fibrobesity programme funded by the Academy of Finland, targeting obesity-related fibrotic pathologies.

The faculty and the research group
Applications are invited for a full-time fixed-term doctoral student position for a period of four years in the Disease Networks Unit, at the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine (FBMM). The Cancer Signaling group led by Daniela Ungureanu works on the Wnt-receptor pseudokinases signaling involved in cancer development and the application of functional precision medicine for targeted therapies in cancer. The research project focuses on the role of Wnt-signaling in cancer development such as ovarian cancer, to understand the molecular basis for chemoresistance. The main tasks for the research project include working with mammalian and patient-derived tissue cultures and performing a variety of molecular biology methods.

Qualification requirements
The successful candidate for the doctoral student position must possess a Master´s degree in the field of molecular biology, biochemistry or translational cancer research. The candidate should have a strong interest in learning cutting-edge methods related to translational, molecular and biochemistry research. Previous demonstrated research experience in molecular biology and basic bioinformatics skills is considered a significant advantage. The selected candidate should be able to work independently as well as in a group with a drive to excel in research. Fluency in both written and spoken English is required. Most importantly, we expect the candidate to have a strong motivation to conduct high-level research in molecular medicine.

A trial period of 6 months is applied in the position.

Salary
The salary will be based on the demand levels 2 – 4 of the salary system of Finnish Universities for teaching and research personnel. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 2,400 – 2,500 € per month.

The Functional RNAomics laboratory at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology, Tampere University studies gene regulation via RNA processing. By determining how RNA regulation is orchestrated in different cell types, we aim to crack the cellular RNA code and gain critical insights into how aberrations in the RNA machinery result in genetic disorders and cancer. RNA is emerging as a powerful and easily adaptable therapeutic molecule as exemplified by the rapid development of effective mRNA vaccines but a detailed knowledge of RNA regulation in cells is a prerequisite to realise the full potential of RNA-based therapeutic and diagnostic development. We integrate cell biology approaches with mechanistic studies, global mapping of RNA repertoires, RNA binding protein interactions and proteomics profiles to reveal the functional role of RNA-protein complexes in different cell lineages and in disease.

Job description

We are looking for two post-doctoral researchers on full- or part-time basis:

1. The postdoctoral researcher in cell and molecular biology will conduct experimental research involving advanced molecular biology techniques including sample preparation for short-read and long-read RNA sequencing, cell and organoid cultures, and various biochemistry methods. The work involves experimental planning, detailed recording of data, data analysis and reporting of results.
2. The post-doctoral research in bioinformatics will analyse a range of large-scale datasets including short-read RNA sequencing, long-read direct RNA sequencing and proteomics data. The work includes the application of existing data analysis pipelines as well as the development of new computational methods. It also involves experimental planning, detailed recording of data and reporting of results.

Requirements

The positions are mostly intended for recently graduated researchers, so that they may gain further experience and advance their careers. You should have a PhD degree in biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, bioinformatics/computational biology or a related subject area. We expect a competence to pursue independent scientific work. You should be fluent in spoken and written English and have a solid experience either in (1) cell and molecular biology or (2) computational biology/bioinformatics. Skills in both wet and dry lab research are considered an advantage. 

You should be able to communicate with experimental and computational biologists as a member of a multidisciplinary team. We appreciate experience of studying or working abroad and contacts to international research community. We are looking for versatile and independent researchers with experience in the closely related area of the positions. It is expected that you will be able to contribute to the supervision of M.Sc. and Ph.D. students. Please be prepared to provide a proof of your merits when requested.

Functional RNAomics -tutkimusryhmä Tampereen yliopiston Lääketieteen ja terveysteknologian tiedekunnassa tutkii RNA-välitteistä geenien säätelyä. Tutkimuksemme tavoitteena on selvittää, miten RNA-tason säätely toimii eri solutyypeissä. Tehtävänkuvaus

1. Tutkijatohtori/solu- ja molekyylibiologia: molekyyli- ja solubiologian tutkimuksen suunnitteleminen, laboratoriatehtävät mukaan lukien soluviljely, sekvenointikirjastojen valmistaminen erilaisiin RNA-sekvenointisovelluksiin sekä erilaiset biokemian menetelmät, tulosten analysointi ja raportointi.
2. Tutkijatohtori/bioinformatiikka: RNA-sekvenointi- ja proteomidatan analysointi käyttäen olemassaolevia menetelmiä, uusien analyysimenetelmien kehittäminen, tulosten reportointi.

Tutkimusryhmän työkieli on englanti, joten sujuva englanninkielen taito on välttämätön. Tutkijatohtorin tehtäviin kuuluu nuorempien tutkijoiden ja opiskelijoiden ohjaus.

OUR CLIENTS are researchers who are using a wide variety of omics technologies from standard mRNA sequencing, DNA sequencing and epigenetics to completely novel experimental platforms. You are already familiar with standard computational methods for omics data analysis, such as how to ascertain the quality of an experiment, statistical testing, as well as the specialised computational tools of the trade, such as genome alignment, genome assembly and annotation, SNP calling, peak calling, pathway analysis, and are excited to learn new tools for new technologies. The biological applications our clients are working with range from microbiology, to plants and animals, to biomedical applications, such as immunology or cancer. We don’t expect that you are an expert in all areas, but you will have enough base understanding to be able to quickly grasp the essence of our clients’ research questions.

SUCCEEDING IN THE POSITION REQUIRES

• understanding a wide variety of omics data types,
• understanding typical analysis workflows for most omics data types,
• ability to implement analysis tasks, and interpret the validity of the results
• experience in publishing omics-heavy applied research papers
• enthusiasm to learn new biology and technology, and
• a knack for science outreach and communication (in written text, data visualisations and conversation/presentations).

If you have practical experience in publishing biological research papers with a bioinformatics component, and/or have worked in a bioinformatics core laboratory, for example, you are already quite familiar with our projects. The position would be ideal for an academic bioinformatician who wants to work in management, but also to remain firmly within the research realm of life sciences and bioinformatics. SUBMISSION MEDICAL WRITER

Your Tasks And Responsibilities

• Independently author study level clinical documents and clinical submission documents, reviews and is responsible for their consistency.
• Implement the submission authoring strategy under the leadership of the MW Strategist.
• Supports the MW Strategist to manage the activity, resource and time planning for the clinical part of submissions.
• Drives the design of clinical submission documents in support of the Clinical Development Plan, validates individual study protocol design, key messages of the clinical study report and other clinical submission documents, for assigned projects.
• Maintains current knowledge on all regulatory agency medical review guidelines and drug approval requirements for assigned projects.
• Implement the content strategy for all clinical documents as assigned.
• Accountable for the format, content and adherence to global and electronic publishing standards of the individual clinical documents that he/she is the author of.
• Mentors Associate Submission Medical Writers and Senior Scientific Medical Writers (internal and insourced) in developing expertise.
• Active communication and collaboration with study teams.
• Support other medical writing processes as applicable.
  

Who You Are

• This position requires a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 10 years experience in the pharmaceutical industry or a Master degree and a minimum of 8 years experience in the pharmaceutical industry or a PhD and a minimum of 6 years experience in the pharmaceutical industry. In all cases, the candidate should have at least 6 years experience in regulatory medical writing, 4 of which should be in writing the submission documents (Safety Summaries, Efficacy Summaries, Clinical Overviews, etc.).
• PhD in natural sciences or equivalent degree is highly preferred.
• The incumbent must possess strong planning and project management skills and experiences. Project management certification is highly preferred.
• The incumbent must have experience in developing clinical documents in support of regulatory submissions globally (i.e., multiple regions).
• The incumbent must have an in depth understanding of all regulatory guidance, standards and requirements pertaining to regulatory medical writing worldwide (eg ICH, FDA, EMEA).
• The incumbent must have a thorough understanding of the overall drug development process. Specific knowledge of the clinical study report development process, regulatory and drug safety requirements, and clinical data management and statistical processes/functions is required.
• Experience in supporting diverse indications is preferred.
• The incumbent must have experience in leading teams and mentoring medical writers for at least 2 years.
• The incumbent must also have an excellent working knowledge of current electronic authoring, document management and electronic regulatory submissions.
• The incumbent must demonstrate strong communication skills, both written and verbal required to articulate concepts and ideas.
• The incumbent must be diplomatic, persuasive and be able to establish rapport with all key functional leaders and experts in the Pharma Research & Development organization.
