Ei vain rohdoksia – Tutkijat löysivät suomalaisista sienistä koronavirusta tuhoavia yhdisteitä (Suomen Kuvalehti, 11/2021)

Suomen Kuvalehden 11/2021 numerossa on ilmestynyt juttu, jossa kerrotaan luonnon aineiden merkityksestä modernille lääketieteelle. Artikkelissa on haastateltu myös professori Varpu Marjomäkeä (Jyväskylän yliopisto), joka on yhdessä erikoistutkija Riikka Linnakosken (Luke) kanssa löytänyt kotimaisista sienistä saatavia yhdisteitä, jotka tuhoavat tehokkaasti myös koronavirusten taudinaiheuttamiskyvyn.

SSB:n nettisivut uudistuvat – Osallistu bannerikilpailuun!

Suomen Solubiologit ry uudistaa nettisivunsa, minkä kunniaksi olemme päättäneet järjestää bannerikilpailun! Lähetä meille mikroskooppikuva, niin osallistut kilpailuun, jonka voittaja saa kuvansa uusien nettisivujen banneriksi ja Solubiologi-lehden kanteen. Voittaja palkitaan lisäksi vuoden ilmaisella jäsenyydellä!

Bannerikilpailun säännöt

  1. Bannerikilpailun järjestää Suomen Solubiologit ry.
  2. Kilpailuun osallistuvan henkilön tulee omistaa oikeudet lähetettyyn mikroskooppikuvaan. Kilpailuun osallistuja voi kuitenkin lähettää kuvan kolmannen osapuolen (esim. kollega tai yhteistyökumppani) puolesta, mutta tällöin kolmannen osapuolen täytyy kirjoittaa sekä allekirjoittaa vapaamuotoinen lausunto siitä, että lähettäjä saa osallistua kilpailuun kuvallaan.
  3. Kilpailu päättyy maanantaina 5. päivä huhtikuuta 2021. Tämän jälkeen saapuvat kuvat eivät pääse osallistumaan kilpailuun.
  4. Kuvan lähettäjä vastaa siitä, että kuvan hankinnassa ja jakamisessa noudatetaan EU:n yleisen tietosuoja-asetuksen eettisiä ohjeita ja säädöksiä.
  5. Kilpailuun voi osallistua maksimissaan kolmella mikroskooppikuvalla. Kuvatiedoston nimen tulee koostua kuvan nimestä sekä osallistujan nimestä, esim. mikrotubulus_Matti_Meikalainen.tiff.
  6. Jokaiseen kilpailuun osallistuvan kuvan mukaan tulee liittää seuraavat tiedot: Kuvan lähettäjän nimi ja affiliaatio, sekä tarvittaessa myös kolmas osapuoli, joka on antanut suostumuksensa kuvan käyttämiseen kilpailussa (Liitä tässä tapauksessa mukaan myös suostumus pdf-tiedostona); Kuvan nimi; Vapaamuotoinen, lyhyt kuvaus kuvasta sekä mahdollisista muokkauksista (max. 100 sanaa); Laboratorion nimi/paikka, jossa kuva on otettu; Kuvan ottamiseen käytetyn mikroskoopin nimi ja malli
  7. Kuvavaatimukset: Kuvan tulee olla RGB-kuva joko TIFF-, PSD- tai PDF-muodossa; Kuva tulee ottaa ja lähettää parhaimmassa mahdollisessa kuvalaadussa; Kuvan resoluution tulee olla vähintään 300 dpi; Kuvat, jotka eivät täytä annettuja vaatimuksia, eivät osallistu kilpailuun
  8. Sekä alkuperäiset että muokatut kuvat hyväksytään kilpailuun.
  9. Kuva tulee ladata Suomen Solubiologien Dropbox-kansioon, johon saa latauslinkin paluuviestinä, kun hakemus on lähetetty osoitteeseen suomensolubiologit@gmail.com. Hakemukseen vaadittavat tiedot voi lähettää sähköpostina, tai sähköpostiin liitettävänä pdf-tiedostona.
  10. Kilpailuraati arvioi kuvat visuaalisuuden ja teknisen toteutuksen perusteella.
  11. Kilpailun voittajaa sekä muita sijoittuneita osallistujia informoidaan sähköpostin välityksellä sunnuntaihin 11. huhtikuuta 2021 mennessä.
  12. Kilpailun voittanut mikroskooppikuva päätyy Suomen Solubiologit ry:n uusien nettisivujen banneriin. Mikroskooppikuvan ottajan nimi tulee löytymään uudistuneilta nettisivuilta. Kilpailun voittaja palkitaan vuoden ilmaisella jäsenyydellä, minkä lisäksi kuva pääsee Solubiologi-lehden kanteen.
  13. Kilpailussa toiseksi ja kolmanneksi tullut kuva julkaistaan Solubiologi-lehdessä.
  14. Kilpailun voittanutta, toiseksi ja kolmanneksi tullutta kuvaa sekä niiden ottajia voidaan mainostaa yhdistyksen nettisivuilla, sosiaalisen median kanavissa (Instagram, Facebook ja Twitter) sekä Solubiologi-lehdessä.
  15. Kuvan/kuvat lähettämällä osallistuja antaa Suomen Solubiologit ry:lle oikeuden käyttää ja muokata kuvia kilpailun aikana tai sen jälkeen ilman ennakkoilmoitusta ei-kaupalliseen, yhdistyksen toimintaa edistävään tarkoitukseen tai mainontaan. Jos kuvaa käytetään, kuvan ottajan nimi mainitaan kuvan yhteydessä.
  16. Kilpailuun osallistuja sitoutuu noudattamaan bannerikilpailun sääntöjä.

Suomen Solubiologit ry piti vuosikokouksensa torstaina 25.2.2021 etäyhteyksin Zoomin välityksellä. Kokoukseen pääsi osallistumaan myös kunniajäsenemme Jari Rantamäki, joka antoi hallituslaisillemme arvokkaita neuvoja yhdistystoimintaan liittyen.

Vuoden 2020 toinen Solubiologi-lehti on ajankohtainen kooste tämänhetkisestä ikääntymistutkimuksesta. Näkemyksiään aiheesta esittelee geriatrian professori Timo Strandberg, ja FM Anna Kankaanpää sekä LitT Elina Sillanpää kertovat tiedeartikkelissa epigeneettisistä kelloista. Lehdessä on mukana myös Kuukauden Solubiologi Satu Pekkala, joka on julkaissut kirjansa ”Suolistomikrobit ja terveys – hyvinvointia koko keholle” syksyllä 2020. Solubiologista löytyy siis jälleen kerran paljon mielenkiintoista luettavaa jäsenillemme!

Suomen Solubiologit ry suosittelee tiistaina 23.2.2021 järjestettävää tutkitun tiedon iltaa, jossa Jyväskylän yliopiston tutkijat esittelevät tutkimustietoa koronaviruksesta ja rokotekehityksestä sekä vastaavat yleisökysymyksiin. Tilaisuudessa puhuvat apulaisprofessori Lotta-Riina Sundberg, professori Varpu Marjomäki ja apulaisprofessori Matti Vihola. määräaikaiseen työsuhteeseen 1.3.2021 alkaen tai sopimuksen mukaan. Tehtävä on määräaikainen 31.12.2022 saakka.

iCAN digitaalisen yksilöllistetyn syöpälääketieteen osaamiskeskus on yksi Suomen kymmenestä tutkimuksen lippulaivahankkeesta. iCANissä yhdistetään uudella tavalla täsmälääketieteen työkaluja ja digitaalista terveystietoa tavoitteena tehokkaampi ja yksilöllinen syövän hoito.

Laboratoriokoordinattorin tehtäviin kuuluu ensisijaisesti potilasnäytteiden nouto leikkaussalista, solujen eristäminen, soluviljely, DNA- ja RNA- eristysten tekeminen Pirjo Laakkosen iCAN projektissa sekä laboratorion perusylläpito ja tilausten tekeminen. Odotamme sinulta vahvan solubiologian osaamisen lisäksi erinomaista organisointikykyä ja yhteistyötaitoja sekä hyvää englannin kielen osaamista. Aiempi työkokemus biolääketieteellisen tutkimuksen parissa katsotaan eduksi.

Tehtävän palkkaus perustuu yliopistojen palkkausjärjestelmän muun henkilöstön vaativuustasokartan tasoon 7-8 koulutuksesta ja kokemuksesta riippuen. Lisäksi maksetaan henkilökohtaiseen suoriutumiseen perustuva palkanosa. Tehtävässä käytetään 6 kuukauden koeaikaa.

Position Description

Prof. Hélder Santos’ lab is seeking for a PhD student in nanomedicine translation into the clinic. The selected PhD candidate will obtain a double degree at the University of Helsinki and Università degli Studi “Magna Graecia” di Catanzaro. The PhD position consists of studies at Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Helsinki (UH, Finland) and at Dipartimento di Medicina Sperimentale e Clinica, Università degli Studi “Magna Graecia” di Catanzaro (UNICZ, Italy), and secondments at Karolinska Institutet (Sweden), Bayer Oy (Finland) and Capsamedix Oy (Finland). The supervisors of the PhD double degrees are Prof. Hélder Santos (UH) and Prof. Massimo Fresta (UNICZ). The position is funded by the Innovative Training Network (ITN) project “Perspectives For Future Innovation in Tendon repair (P4 FIT)” of the Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA).

The topics of the PhD candidate: (1) Evaluate the scaling-up and batch control of nanomaterials for composite tendon biomimetic hydrogels and nanoplatforms. (2) Optimize the physicochemical properties of composite tendon biomimetic scaffolds, hydrogels, and newly and already tested therapeutic nanoplatforms for scale-up, low cost and large production before and after the integration of various components as nanomedicines. (3) Compare the composition of safe and biocompatible nanomaterials, as well as the physicochemical properties of nanomedicines before and after the scale-up and large production. (4) Design and develop protocols, and validate nanomedicines for the scale-up. (5) Design, setup, and built-up regulatory documents. (6) Translate the protocols developed for the production of nanomedicines in clinic and treat patients affected by tendinopathies.

P4 FIT Project Description

Perspectives For Future Innovation in Tendon repair (P4 FIT) fosters to build a new generation of ESRs with adequate skills to explore non-conventional therapeutic and diagnostic solutions by exploiting the technological advances in nanomedicine. The translation of innovative nanodevices carried out on integrated pre-clinical and vet/human clinical settings are expected to produce solid evidence-based datasets able to reduce fragmentation still limiting the impact of biomedical discoveries and to offer a unique opportunity for identifying new predictive biomarkers through the use of AI and deep learning data analysis. Working across disciplines and sectors, P4 FIT will foster the 15 ESRs to be creative, critical, autonomous intellectual risk takers at the frontiers of research with the R&I mind-set necessary for thriving careers. P4 FIT will allow to fill the EU gap in tendon healthcare, building up a generation of researchers able to develop nano-based biomedical devices by integrating biology advances to technology innovation, and to computational revolution. The P4 FIT cross-disciplinary approach includes 6 beneficiaries and 21 partner organizations (10 academic and 11 non-academic) from across Europe.

Requirements

• To be an Early-Stage Researcher (ESR): You must, at the time of recruitment, be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of your research career and have not been awarded a doctoral degree. Full-time equivalent research experience is measured from the date when you obtained the degree, which formally entitles you to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate was envisaged.
• Mobility rule: At the time of the recruitment, you must not have resided or carried out your main activity (e.g. work and studies) in Finland for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to your recruitment. Short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account.
• English language: Network fellows (ESRs) must demonstrate that their ability to understand and express themselves in both written and spoken English is sufficiently high for them to derive the full benefit from the network training.
• Master level in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, Nanotechnology, Nanomedicine, Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology, or related field, ideally with a multidisciplinary background in microfluidics and nanoparticles.

The selected applicant is expected to enroll to doctoral programmes leading to the award of a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki and Medical University of Vienna by the end of December 2021 and has the standard 6-month probationary period.

Salary and Benefits

The salary is competitive and complies with the MSCA Work Programme: 3500 euros per month before taxes, consisting of Living and Mobility allowance. A conditional Family allowance of 385 euros can be added to the salary. The guaranteed PhD funding is for 36 months (i.e., funding from the European Commission, additional funding to cover the last year of the PhD will be discussed later). In addition to their individual scientific projects, all ESRs will benefit from further continuing education, which includes internships and secondments, a variety of training modules as well as transferable skills courses and active participation in workshops and conferences.

The position is funded by the Innovative Training Network (ITN) project “Perspectives For Future Innovation in Tendon repair (P4 FIT)” of the Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA).

The topics of the PhD candidate: (1) Microfluidic approach to synthesize innovative multilayered and complex nanohybrid platforms (MCNPs) made from organic and inorganic materials aimed to co-deliver immunomodulatory and tendon regenerative agents (commercial growth factors and/or characterized bioactive molecules). (2) Evaluate in vitro the physicochemical and biopharmaceutical properties of the MCNPs. (3) Control and modify the release profile of MCNPs. (4) Explore in vitro the process of uptake, processing and presentation of MCNPs from phagocytes to T cells. (5) Mapping of local cytosolic enzymatic activity in phagocytes to T cells by biodegradable silicon nanoneedles. (6) Test the stability and storage conditions of MCNPs.

P4 FIT Project Description

Perspectives For Future Innovation in Tendon repair (P4 FIT) fosters to build a new generation of ESRs with adequate skills to explore non-conventional therapeutic and diagnostic solutions by exploiting the technological advances in nanomedicine. The translation of innovative nanodevices carried out on integrated pre-clinical and vet/human clinical settings are expected to produce solid evidence-based datasets able to reduce fragmentation still limiting the impact of biomedical discoveries and to offer a unique opportunity for identifying new predictive biomarkers through the use of AI and deep learning data analysis. Working across disciplines and sectors, P4 FIT will foster the 15 ESRs to be creative, critical, autonomous intellectual risk takers at the frontiers of research with the R&I mind-set necessary for thriving careers. P4 FIT will allow to fill the EU gap in tendon healthcare, building up a generation of researchers able to develop nano-based biomedical devices by integrating biology advances to technology innovation, and to computational revolution. The P4 FIT cross-disciplinary approach includes 6 beneficiaries and 21 partner organizations (10 academic and 11 non-academic) from across Europe.

Requirements

• To be an Early-Stage Researcher (ESR): You must, at the time of recruitment, be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of your research career and have not been awarded a doctoral degree. Full-time equivalent research experience is measured from the date when you obtained the degree, which formally entitles you to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate was envisaged.
• Mobility rule: At the time of the recruitment, you must not have resided or carried out your main activity (e.g. work and studies) in Finland for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to your recruitment. Short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account.
• English language: Network fellows (ESRs) must demonstrate that their ability to understand and express themselves in both written and spoken English is sufficiently high for them to derive the full benefit from the network training.
• Master level in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, Nanotechnology, Nanomedicine, Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology, or related field, ideally with a multidisciplinary background in microfluidics and nanoparticles.

The selected applicant is expected to enroll to doctoral programmes leading to the award of a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki and Medical University of Vienna by the end of December 2021 and has the standard 6-month probationary period.

Salary and Benefits

The salary is competitive and complies with the MSCA Work Programme: 3500 euros per month before taxes, consisting of Living and Mobility allowance. A conditional Family allowance of 385 euros can be added to the salary. The guaranteed PhD funding is for 36 months (i.e., funding from the European Commission, additional funding to cover the last year of the PhD will be discussed later). In addition to their individual scientific projects, all ESRs will benefit from further continuing education, which includes internships and secondments, a variety of training modules as well as transferable skills courses and active participation in workshops and conferences.

Tehtävä

Väitöskirjatutkijan tehtävänä on suorittaa tohtorin tutkinto Tampereen yliopistossa Lääketieteen ja terveysteknologian tiedekunnan tohtoriohjelmassa. Tutkinnon tavoiteaika on neljä vuotta ja työsuhteen pituus määräytyy opiskelutilanteen ja valmistumistavoitteen perusteella. 

Työsuhteeseen kuuluu  koeaika ja vuosittain tapahtuva arviointi aikataulutetun opinto- ja ohjaussuunnitelman perusteella. 

Väitöskirjatutkijan tehtäviin voi sisältyä väitöskirjatutkimuksen lisäksi osallistuminen opetukseen tai muihin tiedekunnan tehtäviin, jotka tukevat hänen opintojaan. Näiden tehtävien osuus voi olla enintään 5 % kokonaistyöajasta.

Kelpoisuusvaatimukset

Väitöskirjatutkijan tehtävään valittavalta edellytetään ylempää korkeakoulututkintoa. Ennen työsuhteen alkamista väitöskirjatutkijalla on oltava jatko-opinto-oikeus tiedekunnan tohtoriohjelmaan sekä hyväksytty opinto- ja tutkimussuunnitelma. Tiedekunnan tohtoriohjelmiin ennen 31.12.2020 valituilla opiskelijoilla tulee olla seurantaryhmänkokoukset käytynä ennen työsuhteen aloittamista tohtoriohjelmassa. Mikäli opiskelija ei vielä hakemusta jättäessään kuulu tiedekunnan tohtoriohjelmaan (Lääketieteen, biotieteiden ja biolääketieteen tekniikan tohtoriohjelma, Lääketieteen ja biotieteiden tohtoriohjelma, Biolääketieteen tekniikan tohtoriohjelma), hänen tulee olla yhteydessä tiedekunnan ryhmänjohtajaan ja sopia jatko-opintojen ohjaamisesta ja ohjausresurssin saatavuudesta ennen hakemuksen jättämistä. 

Tiedekunnan tohtoriohjelmaan valittavien opiskelijoiden soveltuvuutta, valmiuksia ja sitoutumista jatko-opintojen menestykselliseen suorittamiseen arvioidaan tiedekuntaneuvoston vahvistamin valintaperustein.

Tehtävä sijoittuu opetus- ja tutkimushenkilökunnan vaativuustasokartan vaativuustasolle 2-4 riippuen tutkimustyön vaiheesta. Tehtäväkohtaisen palkanosan maksamisen lisäksi maksetaan henkilökohtaiseen suoriutumiseen perustuvaa palkanosaa. Tehtävän voi ottaa vastaan aikaisintaan 1.4.2021. Job desciption

Successful candidates pursue a doctoral degree in the Doctoral Programmes in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology. The expected duration of full-time studies is four years and the contract’s length depends on how far along in their studies the successful candidates are and when they expect to graduate. 

The positions carry a trial period and the progress of the thesis work is evaluated annually according to the personal study and supervisory plan for doctoral studies. 

In addition to the thesis work, doctoral researchers teach or do other work connected to their studies at the faculty. These duties may not exceed five per cent of their total working hours. 

Requirements

Successful candidates will have a higher university degree, be pursuing a doctoral degree in faculty’s doctoral program and will present an approved study and research plan, before writing the contract. A master’s degree is required to be selected for the position of a doctoral researcher. Students who have started their studies in a faculty’s doctoral programme before 31.12.2020 must have their annual follow-up group meeting completed before starting the employment. Furthermore, before starting the employment, the applicant must have the right to pursue doctoral studies in the Faculty’s doctoral programme and an approved study and research plan. If the student is not yet part of the Faculty’s doctoral programme (Doctoral Programme in Medicine, Biosciences and Biomedical Engineering, Doctoral Programme in Medicine and Life Sciences, Doctoral Programme in Biomedical Sciences and Engineering), the student must contact the faculty group leader and agree on the supervision of doctoral studies and the availability of a guidance resource before submitting the application. 

The suitability, preparedness and commitment of the students admitted to the Faculty’s Doctoral Programmes are assessed on the basis of criteria established by the Faculty Council.

The Steering Group of the Faculty’s Doctoral Programme proposes doctoral researchers to be selected for the doctoral programme, and the Dean of the Faculty decides on the employment.

The salary will be based on the demand level chart for the teaching and research staff of Finnish Universities. The preliminary level of demand is 2-4. In addition to the basic salary, a supplementary salary component will be paid according to the personal performance. The positions can start on April 1st, 2021 at the earliest.
