PhD position is open in a project focusing on understanding the molecular mechanisms related to health-beneficial effect of plant-based foods such as whole grain products, and the role of gut microbiota in this interaction.  The project involves analytics with liquid chromatography – mass spectrometry metabolomics applications conducted on various different samples matrices originating from human dietary intervention trials as well as animal feeding trials with plant-based foods. An essential component of the PhD project is the establishment of cell culture methods to assess the molecular level impact of various food/microbiota derived compounds on cellular metabolic pathways and general biochemical response.    The expectation of competence 1) MSc degree in Chemistry, Food Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related field. 2) Previous research experience and knowledge     The successful candidate should have earlier experience on mass spectrometry analyses, as well as bioassays measuring e.g. inflammatory responses. Earlier experience on establishing and working on cell culture assays is regarded as benefit. Good spoken and written English is required for the position.    Period of employment and salary levels

The employment period will be for four years including a trial period of 6 months. The salary is determined by the collective agreement system of Finnish universities. The position belongs to our research personnel and the salary will be 2300 – 2700 eur/month in average.  Our selection criteria is based on the principle of finding the most qualified and suitable candidate for the work. In practice, this means that not only education and working experience but also personal qualities, motivation factors, language skills and other relevant criteria will be taken into account.

We are looking for a research scientist in cell or molecular biology to a research project focusing on genetic modification of T cells and NK cells with Chimeric Antigen Receptors.

​The Finnish Red Cross Blood Service has a strategic interest in the development of novel cell therapeutics. Presently, mesenchymal stromal cells are being manufactured at the Advanced Cell Therapy Centre for treatment of patients, and we are also collaborating with industry in an R&D project aiming at developing a Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR)-equipped T-cell product for patient treatment.

The Project / the Position

The research project is funded as part of the Academy of Finland Flagship program GeneCellNano (2020-2024). The person hired for this post will be employed by the University of Eastern Finland but carry out their work at the Finnish Red Cross Blood Service in Helsinki. The current funding covers one year and the work contract will be made for that period, and more research funding is applied for the continuation of the project. We will employ a post-doctoral scientist or a post-graduate researcher aiming at a PhD degree for the project. The scientist is expected to devote a part (10-20%) of his/her time to laboratory management.

We hope you could start your work in March-April of 2022.

The project is conducted in collaboration with research groups from the Universities of Helsinki and Eastern Finland. Your work involves planning the research, carrying out experiments and interpreting and reporting the results. You will operate within the iCell research group (https://www.bloodservice.fi/Research%20Projects/cell-therapy/icell ) that focuses on developing novel immune cell technologies.

Skills and experience

You have a suitable university degree and strong experience of cell culture experiments. Experience of immunology and molecular biology will be helpful. The project will employ animal tumor models. The work requires a self-driven and motivated scientist with previous experience of research. Collaboration and communication skills are also important. Describe in your application the experimental techniques in cell culture, immunology and molecular biology that you master, and how long you experience in these techniques is, your motivation for academic research and lab-work, as well as possible references.

DOCTORAL STUDENT IN PLANT GENETICS

The doctoral student will be employed full-time for a fixed term of two years in the research group of
assoc. prof. Roosa Laitinen. The earliest starting date is 1st April 2022 or by a mutual agreement.

Roosa Laitinen´ s research group utilizes both global and local accessions of Arabidopsis thaliana to
understand the mechanisms of plant adaptation and evolution. We combine methods of genetics and
genomics to state-of-art molecular methods that are available for Arabidopsis. Our aim is to identify
genes that allow plants to adapt to changing environments and to translate the knowledge to improve
crop plants.

We are seeking a doctoral student to work on a project investigating the genetic factors underlying
plasticity in flowers and in leaves in response to different environments in A. thaliana. The aim is to use
take advantage of the natural variation in A. thaliana and use GWA analysis together with transgenic and
mutant approaches to identify genes that regulate growth plasticity in A. thaliana.

We seek highly motivated candidates with excellent communicational skills, and who can work both
independently and in team environments. Fluency in English is expected. The candidate should have
MSc degree in genetics, molecular biology, biology or related fields and to have proven academic ability
to take initiative and think independently as well as experience in working with plants.

The position is fixed-term (24 months) with a six-month probation period and requires traveling. Salary is based on levels 2-4 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. Akatemiatutkija Emilia Peuhu etsii tutkimusryhmäänsä motivoitunutta ja pätevää tutkijatohtoria ajalle 1.3.-31.8.2022 (on todennäköistä, että tehtävä jatkuu tämän jälkeen). Peuhun tutkimusryhmä (https://peuhulab.utu.fi/) toimii Turun yliopiston biolääketieteen laitoksella. Tutkimushankkeen tavoitteena on selvittää miten kudoksen jäykkyys, koostumus ja rakenne säätelevät rintasyöpää. Tutkimusta rahoittavat Suomen Akatemia, Sigrid Juseliuksen säätiö, ja Varsinais-Suomen sairaanhoitopiiri.

Rintasyövän etenemisen varhaisvaiheet tunnetaan edelleen huonosti. Tehtävä sijoittuu projektiin, jossa tutkitaan kudosjäykkyyden ja geeniekspression vuorovaikutusta spatiaalista transkriptomiikkaa ja kliinistä kudosmateriaalia käyttäen, ja siinä hyödynnetään tutkimusryhmän kehittämää kudoksen 3D bioprinttausmenetelmää.

Palkka

Tehtäväkohtainen palkkaus määräytyy yliopistojen palkkausjärjestelmän opetus- ja tutkimushenkilöstön vaativuustasokartan tasojen 4 – 6 mukaisesti, jolloin tehtäväkohtainen palkanosa on 2591,28 – 3498,98 €/kk. Tehtäväkohtaisen palkanosan lisäksi maksetaan henkilökohtaiseen suoriutumiseen perustuvaa palkanosaa, joka on vähintään 6% ja enintään 50 % tehtäväkohtaisesta palkanosasta.

Valitun henkilön toivotaan aloittavan mahdollisimman pian, mutta aloituspäivä on sovittavissa. Tehtävässä on korkeintaan 3 kuukauden koeaika.

Research Director / Senior Researcher, Integrated multiomics

The research is to be done in close collaboration with scientists from different research groups within UEF’s Neuroscience Research Community (NEURO-RC, see https://www.uef.fi/en/research-community/neuroscience-neuro ). The international UEFRAE2019 evaluation panel assessed NEURO-RC to be of outstanding quality in international comparison (score 6/6). The goal of the NEURO-RC is to understand the disease-specific and common molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases and epilepsy, and to identify biomarkers and novel therapeutic approaches for their prevention and cure by merging biological and computational neurosciences. To carry our research beyond state-of-the-art, the NEURO-RC combines unique preclinical and clinical datasets of molecular omics to the mechanistic and biomarker studies conducted in humanized disease models, and multilevel analyses performed using neuro-informatics-based approaches. Moreover, studies related to lifestyle and environmental factors will be integrated to these activities.

The Research Director/Senior Researcher will work both as an expert in bioinformatics within the NEURO-RC, and as an independent group leader. The responsibilities also include supervision of doctoral theses, possibly teaching, and acquisition of external funding. An ideal candidate will have a strong background in state-of-the art bioinformatics focused on different kind of omics data (e.g., bulk/scRNA-seq, proteomics, metabolomics, spatial transcriptomics) combined with disease-related genetics. We expect that the candidate can analyze omics data in the multilevel fashion. Furthermore, to gain better insight on genotype-phenotype associations, interrogation of relevant disease models or tissue samples in a single cell level is strongly encouraged. Candidates are welcome to propose a highly innovative research project thematically linked to the scientific mission of the NEURO-RC being complementary to the existing research carried out in the community. The successful candidate is expected to actively collaborate within our interdisciplinary research community and take advantage of the infrastructures and networks available at the UEF. Experience in leading a research team, a strong track record in publishing and gaining research funding and collaborating with other research teams are considered an advantage.

The Research Director/Senior Researcher will be affiliated with Institute of Biomedicine (https://www.uef.fi/en/unit/institute-of-biomedicine) and will have access to the existing research infrastructure. We provide an opportunity to pursue an independent research project for five years. The position includes a yearly budget of 30 000 €/year for personnel and direct project costs for four years.

A person to be appointed as a Research Director/Senior Researcher shall hold a suitable doctoral degree and have good teaching skills. 

The position will be filled for a five-year term starting on 1 March 2022 or as agreed. The position is a fixed-term position due to it pertaining to a specific project. A probationary period will be applied to new members of the university staff. 

The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities and is based on level 6-7 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff (3,498.98 – 4,033.80), In addition to the job requirement component, the salary includes a personal performance component, which may be a minimum of 6 % and a maximum of 50% of the job requirement component. Depending on the personal performance component, the salary will be approximately 3,708.92 – 4,921.24 €/month at the beginning of the employment relationship.

The Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) is an international research institute focusing on human genomics and personalised medicine at the Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE) of the University of Helsinki. Bioinformatician

to join the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland – FIMM, the leading precision cancer medicine research unit in Finland, and two iCAN Digital Precision Cancer Medicine projects.

FIMM is a translational institute with a driving mission to perform innovative research on patients and populations – utilizing molecular, genomic and health data – targeted towards understanding drivers of health and disease and delivering improvements to the safety, efficacy and efficiency of healthcare in Finland and beyond.

iCAN is part of the Academy of Finland Flagship Programme and hosted by the University of Helsinki and Helsinki University Hospital. iCAN is an innovative multidisciplinary initiative that brings together some of the world’s leading actors in cancer genomics, translational and clinical cancer research, digital health, information technology, machine learning, patients and business to solve one of the most pressing challenges in healthcare – cancer.

The bioinformatician will be working in two closely related subprojects of iCAN Flagship project in cancer precision medicine of solid tumors, COMPORG (immuno-organoids & urological cancers) and iCAN-PEDI (functional precision medicine of pediatric solid cancers), advancing personalized cancer diagnostics and treatment. Our multidisciplinary teams work closely together with clinicians at the hospitals, and our aim is to integrate the clinical and omics data into an analysis platform to enable the cutting-edge cancer research and robust translation back to the clinics for the patient’s benefit.

We are looking for a bioinformatician with experience in omics data analysis and especially integration with other data, such as clinical data. Our omics data comes from, for example, high throughput drug testing, DNA/RNA sequencing, microscopic imaging, ligandome analysis and other approaches (e.g. single cell sequencing, metabolomics, pharmacogenomics). The candidate will also have to be able to build up a database for the ligandome data.

As a Bioinformatician, depending on your profile and experience, you will have the opportunity to
– Together with the iCAN data team, build the iCAN data analysis platform to enable integration of clinical and research data
– Manage our omics data and to develop computational pipelines to further integrate and analyze molecular profiling and imaging data for digital precision cancer medicine
– Work with large datasets in cloud environment
– Create software tools for clinical translation with the potential of revolutionizing treatment of cancer

Qualifications:
– Master’s degree (and/or PhD) in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, or equivalent
– Previous experience with omics data, data science or distributed computing environments is appreciated but not required – yet ability to quickly learn new things is essential
– Programming skills, especially in R and/or Python
– Understanding of database fundamentals
– Excellent oral and written communication skills in English; Finnish skills are not required
– Solution-seeking, proactive and respons

Salary and contract:
We will offer a competitive salary that will be based on previous qualifications, experience and performance in the position as based on the Finnish university salary (YPJ) system. The contract will start immediately and will be offered initially until the end of 2022. It may be extended thereafter. A six-month trial period will be applied.
