University of Helsinki is seeking a Project Planner to support an international biomedical research team at the Meilahti Campus. The position starts in June 2026 (or as agreed) and is initially funded for 12 months, with the possibility of extension.
The Project Planner will work closely with the Principal Investigator to support grant applications, research administration, project coordination, and laboratory management. Key responsibilities include coordinating grant proposals and reporting, organizing project meetings, monitoring milestones and deliverables, supporting ethics applications and regulatory compliance, coordinating collaborations with clinicians, biobanks, and core facilities, and assisting with scientific publication processes. The role also contributes to improving laboratory operations, documentation systems, onboarding practices, and research reproducibility.
Applicants must hold a PhD in Systems Biology, Immunology, Metabolism, RNA Biology, or a related field. Experience in research project administration, grant preparation, or research support roles is required. The successful candidate will work in the research group of Dr. Kari Vaahtomeri at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki.
Scientific context
IMMENs, composed of research groups at the University of Helsinki (director Dr. Taija Mäkinen and Dr. Kari Vaahtomeri) and Åbo Akademi in Turku (Dr. Cecilia Sahlgren and Dr. Guillaume Jacquemet), investigates the role of lymphatic vessel endothelium in controlling immune responses. Current evidence shows that much of immune regulation occurs locally at the site of inflammation. Recent studies have revealed important crosstalk between lymphatic endothelium and immune cells, resulting in phenotypic changes that control immune cell trafficking, fate and function. IMMENs will develop novel experimental approaches to uncover the mechanisms and therapeutic potential of lymphatic endothelial immunomodulation in homeostasis, inflammation and tumorigenesis using in vivo genetic mouse models, advanced live and intravital imaging, engineered microchip models, primary cell co-culture systems and novel microscopy and analysis methods. In this context, Vaahtomeri laboratory addresses fundamental cell biology mechanisms of cell migration/interactions.

Elintarviketieteet ovat keskeinen tutkimus- ja opetusala ruokaketjussa, jonka täytyy pystyä tuottamaan turvallista, maistuvaa ja saatavilla olevaa ruokaa muuttuvissa olosuhteissa. Raaka-aineiden ja niistä tehtyjen ruokien tulee olla kemiallisesti, fysikaalisesti ja mikrobiologisesti turvallisia ja ravitsemuksellisesti korkeatasoisia. Ruuan tulee olla logistisesti hyvin saatavilla, olla kohtuuhintaista ja helppokäyttöistä. Ruuan maun ja käyttökokemuksen pitää vastata kuluttajien odotuksia ja ruoka täytyy tuottaa maapallon kantokyky huomioon ottaen. Tämä vaatii syvällistä osaamista raaka-aineiden ja ruuan kemiallisista ja fysikaalisista ominaisuuksista, tuotantoteknologioista sekä siitä, miten nämä liittyvät ruuan aistinvaraisiin ominaisuuksiin, turvallisuuteen ja käyttökelpoisuuteen.
Tehtävänkuvaus
Apulaisprofessori vahvistaa maatalous-metsätieteellisen tiedekunnan elintarviketieteiden ja siihen liittyvien alojen tutkimusta ja opetusta. Apulaisprofessorilla tulee olla monipuolinen tietämys elintarvikkeiden suunnittelusta laadukkaiden, kestävien ja turvallisten ruokaratkaisujen aikaansaamiseksi. Tehtävä sijoittuu elintarvikekemian (kemiallinen turvallisuus), elintarviketeknologian, elintarvikeprosessiteknologian, aistinvaraisen ja kuluttajatutkimuksen aloille. Apulaisprofessorilla tulee olla kattava osaaminen em. aloihin perustuvista tutkimusmenetelmistä ja asianmukainen tutkimusnäyttö toiminnasta osana tulevaisuuden kestävää ruokajärjestelmää. Tehtävään valitulla tulee olla laaja tuntemus elintarvikealasta ja siinä käytetyistä teknologioista sekä riittävää kokemusta elintarviketeollisuudesta, lainsäädännöstä ja ruuan tuotannon erityspiirteistä lähialueilla ja kansainvälisesti.

MITÄ TARJOAMME

Tehtävän palkkaus perustuu yliopistojen palkkausjärjestelmän opetus- ja tutkimushenkilöstön vaativuustasokartan tasoon 7. Lisäksi maksetaan henkilökohtaiseen suoriutumiseen perustuva palkanosa. Assistant apulaisprofessorin vuosipalkka on noin 55 000-63 000 euroa ja associate apulaisprofessorin vuosipalkka on noin 60 000-72 000 euroa, riippuen valitun henkilön kokemuksesta ja ansioituneisuudesta. Tehtävä täytetään 6 kuukauden koeajalla. Tehtävän työntekopaikka on Helsingin yliopiston Viikin kampus.

The DNA sequencing and genomics laboratory / research infrastructure is looking for a RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE TECHNICIAN to start preferably before the end of 2025, or as soon as possible. Currently we have 5 full-time technicians working within the group, and we are looking for a new technician to join us and to be trained for NGS processes in the laboratory side using our current machinery. The contract is offered initially for 2 years with the possibility of extension as permanent employment.
The DNA sequencing and genomics laboratory is performing a wide variety of DNA and RNA analytics from RNA-seq to de novo genome projects using state of the art Next generation sequencing (NGS) including Element Biosciences and Illumina short-read and PacBio and ONT long-read approaches. We handle thousands of customer samples yearly using both these approaches.
About you
We are looking for a technician with a suitable degree from university of applied sciences or university, who is precise and good at keeping notes of their work. Previous experience with working with DNA/RNA or in making sequencing libraries would be seen as a definite advantage. An interest in instrumentation and /or robotics is a benefit.
The suitable candidate has computer literacy (Windows, Excel, Word) and an ability to work as a part of a team and positive attitude. The required language proficiency for this position is Finnish and English.

The University of Helsinki, Department of Chemistry, is seeking a Doctoral Researcher to join the research group of University Lecturer Markus Metsälä, starting November 2025 or as agreed. The position is full-time for a maximum of four years, with a six-month trial period at the start.
The role is part of the project “Gas Ion Separation Combined with Optical Spectroscopy: Next-Generation Detection of Threat Chemicals”, funded by the Research Council of Finland. The project, in collaboration with VERIFIN (Finnish Institute for Verification of the Chemical Weapons Convention), aims to combine ultra-sensitive photoacoustic spectroscopy with a rapid chemical separation technique, Gas Ion Distillation (GID). The Doctoral Researcher will develop a mid-infrared laser spectrometer using cantilever-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (CEPAS) and integrate it with the GID system for selective and sensitive detection of chemical warfare agents. The University of Helsinki has extensive experience in CEPAS for gas sensing applications.

FIMM is currently seeking a MSCA Doctoral Researcher for spatial multiplexed immunofluorescence profiling of metastases of different cancer types
in a team led by Dr. Teijo Pellinen
We are seeking a highly motivated Doctoral Researcher for a fully funded, 4-year research position in multiplexed immunofluorescence profiling of metastases from various cancer types. This project, part of the Mac4Me consortium, involves advanced tissue imaging and computational analysis to study immune-tumor cell interactions in clinical samples, including brain, bone, and liver metastases. You will work closely with Genevia Technologies Oy (Finland) and The Norwegian Radium Hospital (Norway) to integrate imaging data with multi-omics datasets using cutting-edge AI tools.
This position is part of the European Union’s Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network programme, which focuses on identifying new immunotherapy targets through innovative research on tumor-immune system interactions. The Mac4Me network provides a unique training environment, combining expertise from 18 academic and industry partners across Europe. Successful candidates will benefit from interdisciplinary training, research visits, and opportunities for skill development in fields ranging from systems biology to AI-driven cancer research.
Work tasks As a Doctoral Researcher in Dr. Teijo Pellinen’s team, you will apply innovative multiplexed immunofluorescence technology to spatially profile cells and their interactions in intact tumor tissue sections. You will analyze imaging data to uncover clinically relevant patterns by linking the imaging results to patient health records using advanced computational methods. Key objectives of this PhD project include: 1. Designing and constructing tissue microarrays (TMAs) with appropriate control tissues, including tumor tissues (prostate cancer, breast cancer, neuroblastoma), metastasis target tissues (bone, liver, brain), and tissues with high immune cell content (e.g., lymph node, appendix). 2. Collecting and organizing clinical and pathological data associated with these tissue samples into a shared clinical database. 3. Developing and optimizing antibody panels for multiplex fluorescence immunohistochemistry (mfIHC). 4. Performing mfIHC on TMAs and analyzing the resulting high-resolution images for single-cell phenotyping.
Expected results This project will provide crucial insights into immune cell behaviour within metastases from prostate cancer, breast cancer, and neuroblastoma. Through single-cell spatial imaging, you will identify the key immune cell subsets and their activation or inhibition states in clinical metastasis samples. The project will also reveal the interactions and proximities between immune cells and tumor cells, offering a deeper understanding of immune responses in metastatic environments.
The imaging data will be systematically indexed and integrated with clinical datasets. You will collaborate with partners from Genevia Technologies Oy and The Norwegian Radium Hospital to merge your results with additional multi-omics data. These analyses will contribute to identifying new immune targets and potential therapeutic approaches for cancer treatment.

DOCTORAL RESEARCHERS in controlled and targeted drug delivery
We are looking for highly motivated and skilled PhD candidates with a Master’s Degree or equivalent in pharmacy, bioscience, chemistry, biotechnology, or related fields. The positions are contractual for fixed-term, funded by the Research Council of Finland. The appointments start the earliest from 1st September 2024 (or as agreed on) and lasts until 31 August 2028. The positions will be filled with six (6) months probationary period.
We are looking for researcher to join two projects led by Doctor Zahra Gounani and Professor Timo Laaksonen, at the Pharmaceutical nanotechnology group, ( https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/pharmaceutical-nanotechnology ) at the Division of Pharmaceutical Biosciences. The projects aim at 1) better understanding of targeted pH responsive liposomes liposomes, controlled targeted delivery of antibiotics, and the therapeutical benefits of liposomal delivery of antibiotics, and 2) The use of new polysaccharide-based hydrogels for controlled and triggered drug release using light activation and liposomes as tools. The topics are close to other research projects in our group, and you will be joining a large and growing team working on pharmaceuticals technologies and formulations. We are also part of the GeneCellNano Flagship project ( https://www.genecellnano.fi/ ) and well connected to the academic community in Finland.
In the first project, a successful candidate is expected to develop protocols for formulation of gated pH-responsive liposomes and aptamers against bacterial elements and to characterize the biotherapeutics of the liposomal delivery system against biofilm. In the second project, the candidate is expected to develop new light or heat sensitive polysaccharide hydrogel formulations that can be combined with external light activation mechanisms. This might also be combined with liposomal carriers. A preliminary research plan has been made for both projects. You will contribute to the fundamental understanding of how advanced drug delivery systems can be optimized for precise delivery and controlled drug release, which contribute to improving precision and personalized medicine.
The duties of the doctoral researcher include conducting research in the project framework with the aim of achieving doctoral degree in accordance with the degree requirements of the University of Helsinki, supervision of undergraduate students, and other discipline-specific teaching. The teaching tasks can cover a maximum of 5 % of the total annual working hours.

TEMPADAPT (Single-molecule visualization of temperature adaptation in sub-cellular dynamics and organization across bacteria) is a 5-year ERC-funded project in the laboratory of Jarno Mäkelä at the Institute of Biotechnology, from 2023 onwards. The project will aim at understanding temperature adaptation at the single molecule level in live bacteria. We will study bacteria thriving at 0°C (psychrophiles), moderate temperatures (mesophiles), and high temperatures up to 100°C (thermophiles). In addition to state-of-the-art super-resolution microscopy, the project will apply single-cell perturbations, machine learning and modelling to analyze, integrate, and make sense of single-cell and molecule level data.

A Doctoral Researcher in Super-Resolution Microscopy and Microbiology

Position description
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated doctoral researcher, who is interested in super-resolution microscopy and single-particle tracking, to join our research group for an ERC-funded project. The project involves planning and executing experimental work including state-of-the-art microscopy, genetic engineering, RNA-sequencing, data analysis, machine learning, and modelling to unravel how bacteria adapt to different temperatures. Our team will work on multiple topics at the interface of physics, chemistry, and biology: intracellular spatial organization, macromolecular crowding, liquid-liquid phase separation, heat- and cold shock protein dynamics, and gene regulation.
The appointee is expected to work full time on the Ph.D. thesis and to complete the thesis and the associated studies in four years. The successful applicant will apply to be a Ph.D. student in the appropriate Faculty. The Ph.D. degree consists of the student’s research project resulting in peer-reviewed publications, studies specific to the research field, as well as transferable skills training.
Selection criteria
A successful candidate will have a MSc or equivalent in biology, biophysics, computational biology, or other relevant fields, and has demonstrated a keen interest in quantitative approaches. Previous experience in ‘wet’ lab work, genetic engineering, microbiology, fluorescence microscopy, Python/R/Matlab coding, bioinformatics, or data analysis is considered an advantage. Excellent communication and writing skills in English and ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary international team are expected. The candidate should have outstanding organization and time management skills.

Open position for a Postdoctoral researcher in Bioengineering and Stem Cell Biology
The laboratory of Professor Pekka Katajisto at the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences and Institute of Biotechnology, HiLIFE at the University of Helsinki, Finland, and at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, is looking for a postdoctoral researcher with bioengineering background to study effects of the extracellular niche on stem cell function.
Katajisto group (www.katajisto-lab.com) is part of the Centre of Excellence in Stem Cell Metabolism, MetaStem, and studies stem cell extrinsic and intrinsic mechanisms of tissue renewal and aging. We have for example discovered how age-induced alterations in the stem cell niche reduce tissue repair (Pentinmikko, Nature 2019, Science Advances 2022; Iqbal, BioRxiv 2021), and how cellular metabolism drives cell fate decisions after asymmetric cell divisions (Katajisto, Science 2015; D hla, Nat Cell Biol 2022)
We seek postdoctoral researchers to an ERC-funded project probing how the geometry of the niche influences cell fate decisions using bioengineered scaffolds to modify tissue topology. The project involves development of novel research techniques and assays, and will be facilitated by state-of-the art maskless photolithography instrumentation dedicated to the project.
Applicants with a doctoral degree, and a strong background in tissue/bioengineering or biotechnology are encouraged to apply. The position includes research and experimental work as well as setting up, maintaining, and running instruments used to develop 3D scaffolds for tissue regeneration and stem cell studies. Experience with cell biology, tissue culture or stem cells is considered a benefit. Candidates are also encouraged to start new projects and research directions.
