Two postdoctoral positions in Systems Epidemiology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Oulu
The Computational Medicine Research Team (http://computationalmedicine.fi/) invites highly motivated individuals to apply for postdoctoral positions at the University of Oulu, Finland. These positions are initially for 2 years with a broad focus on systems epidemiology, i.e., integration of multi-omics approaches and data in epidemiology and genetics. Potential extensions are possible for successful candidates. We would also be interested in discussing with candidates at assistant or associate professor level.
Reseach Enviroment
These positions and the work to be done are part of our global endeavour aiming to understand and improve cardiometabolic risk assessment by conducting high-throughput multi-omics profiling of extensive population cohorts and trials at unprecedented sample-sizes. Large-scale studies are a prerequisite for statistically sound metabolic stratifications as well as for understanding the (patho)physiological function of potential new disease biomarkers and the causal pathways in disease aetiology with the aid of modern genetic data. We expect you to have a PhD degree in Bioengineering, Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Medical Sciences, Statistics, Epidemiology, or in a related area. You would need to have good skills in written and spoken English. Knowledge of medical & epidemiological statistics and skills to use R would be essential. A few international peer-reviewed publications in good journals would also be a prerequisite for these positions.

Position-Parameters: Tenure-track, 12-month position.
Duties: The successful candidate will be engaged in professional scholarship and research and have up to-date knowledge regarding their own area of expertise. They are expected to develop an active research program that attracts sustained extramural funding in their area of expertise. Their area of interest should involve neuropharmacology and addiction. It is expected that the new faculty member will contribute to and help develop new effective active learning modalities associated with the therapeutics sequence in the professional program, especially in the area of the neurological sciences. The therapeutic sequence integrates the practice of pharmacy in specific disease areas with the underlying pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, and drug mechanism of action at a molecular, cellular, and whole organism level. Integration of the basic sciences with pharmacy practice is expected in areas of research, education, and service.
Required Qualifications
An earned doctorate or other terminal degree in Pharmacology with at least three years of postdoctoral experience is required for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. Evidence of national and international recognition; a record of sustainable extramural funding and evidence of excellence in education are required for appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. A pharmacy undergraduate degree and/or experience in pharmacy education/teaching will be preferable; the successful candidate will be a dynamic individual with demonstrated records of excellence in teaching and scholarship, and a commitment to excellence in pharmacy education and research.

We wish to appoint a Post-doctoral Research Fellow to support a highly motivated scientist, Professor Edgar Kramer, at the Peninsula School of Medicine of University of Plymouth, UK.
The primary function of the role is to perform collaborative and independent research to study the electrophysiological properties of midbrain dopaminergic neurons and/or the molecular signalling pathways in the dopaminergic circuit in different mouse models. A variety of electrophysiological, genetic, molecular biology and biochemical techniques will be employed, including extra- and intracellular recordings and fast scan cyclic voltammetry on transgenic mice. The work is expected to significantly enhance our understanding of midbrain dopaminergic system function and should shed some light on the etiology and possible therapy of Parkinson disease and drug addiction.
You will be responsible for the provision of specialist research knowledge and expertise that supports neurophysiological work in mice on the dopaminergic system altered in Parkinson disease patients and drug addicts.
You must already have or you should be able to complete in the next few months a PhD in Neuroscience, Neurobiology, Medicine, and Pharmacology or in another related area. Experience in electrophysiological experiments and/or molecular biological approaches in the mouse dopaminergic system and in mouse handling is required. Expertise in stablishing and maintaining an electrophysiological setup and/or in as many techniques as listed above is desirable, and candidates with a strong background in neuroscience and neurodegenerative diseases are particularly encouraged to apply. This position also requires that you have good work ethics, analytical and organisational skills, and an ability to multitask and collaborate well with lab members. Our laboratory is part of the new Derriford Research Facility close to Derriford Hospital on the North Campus which brings together all biomedical research groups and has opened in September, 2017. It is close to Plymouth city centre with its attractive cultural scene and coastline with easy access to the dramatic countryside and some of Britain’s most beautiful beaches in Devon and Cornwall.
This post is a full-time position working 37 hours per week, on a fixed-term basis starting in Spring 2018. Funding is available for 36 months, and renewal upon the first and second year is contingent on mutual agreement and satisfactory performance.

A postdoctoral position in zebrafish neuroscience
A new postdoctoral position is available within a research group (Panula group) which works on basic mechanisms in neurologic and psychiatric diseases. This particular project involves phenotyping and production of new zebrafish mutants generated with the CRISPR/Cas9 method.
The group manages a very well equipped zebrafish facility, including microinjection systems, confocal and 2-photon imaging systems, systems for quantitative behavioural analysis, good facilities for molecular cloning and quantitative expression analysis (e.g. quantitative PCR, MCID4 imaging system), and well-established international collaborations. The laboratories are located in the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience Center (HiLIFE unit) on the Meilahti medical campus of the University of Helsinki. The campus houses about 450 PIs within the areas of life sciences.
Salary will be negotiated according to qualifications and the university salary system. An initial appointment will be made for one year, with possible extension. An ideal candidate has a recent PhD in relevant area (e.g. biosciences, physics), and thorough training and experience in imaging or genome modification methods and management of large datasets, preferably within zebrafish field. Experience in programming, molecular biology, behavioural analysis, and gene expression analysis (transgenic animals, PCR, ish, immunocytochemistry, protein chemistry), high motivation and good communication skills are needed in the multidisciplinary group. Responsibilities include research on zebrafish disease models, imaging, molecular biology, zebrafish breeding and maintenance and participation in guidance of junior group members.

The Translational Research Network for Prostate Cancer (TransPot) is a pan-European Marie Skłodowska-Curie International Training Network (ITN) with a focus on Translational Cancer Research, Cancer Cell Biology and Applied Systems Biology/Systems Medicine. The TransPot research training network will integrate leading academic/private/clinical research scientists and laboratories in Europe with an interest in these research fields to train 11 early stage researchers (ESRs). The consortium will incorporate the latest multi-disciplinary research technologies to understand lethal prostate cancer (PC). TransPot offers a unique and innovative research training programme comprising both basic research (e.g. target validation and drug discovery; biomarker discovery and validation) and transferable skill sets (e.g. cross species onconomics analysis; novel preclinical (culture/in vivo) models).
At Erasmus MC Rotterdam, we will focus on compound screening using dedicated and novel 3D cultured PC therapy-resistant patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models. The results will be validated in tissue slices of PDXs and in clinical PC organoids. As indicated above, the project is highly multidisciplinary and incorporates both target validation and drug testing using various technologies. Intensive collaboration and short-stay visits to our partners in TransPot will complement the research.
Requirements
You are a highly motivated international candidate with a university MSc degree. You have received excellent scientific training in the field of Biomedical Sciences, Medicine or a related field. You have an interest in the molecular biology of (prostate) cancer, underlying signaling pathways, and application of drug screens. Experience with cell culture techniques will be considered a strength. You have outstanding theoretical and experimental research skills, and have a strong team spirit. A strong command of (scientific) English in speech and writing is essential.
You are a national of a member state of the European Union, an Associated Country or any other third country. At the time of selection, you must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of your research career and have not been awarded a doctoral degree. You also must not have resided or carried out main activities (work, studies, etc.) in the Netherlands for more than 12 months in the past 4 years.
Being able to present a certificate of good conduct is a condition for the appointment.
Conditions of employment
You will receive a temporary position for 4 years. The gross monthly salary is € 2.279,- in the 1st year and increases to € 2.919,- in the 4th year (scale OIO). The terms of employment are according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Dutch University Medical Centers (CAO UMC).
