The Ron laboratory at UCSF is inviting applications for postdoctoral position to investigate signaling pathways and plasticity mechanisms that underlie addiction.
Research in the Ron lab uses state-of-the-art techniques including, molecular/genetic technique for gene manipulations in subpopulations of neurons in vivo, viral-mediated gene delivery, RNA-seq and analysis in combination with behavioral approaches in rodent to study signaling cascades within circuitries that underie alcohol abuse disorders (Liu et al. Molecular Psychiatry 2016, Ron and Barak Nature Reviews Neuroscience 2016, Warnault et al., Biological Psychiatry 2015, Darcq et al., Molecular Psychiatry 2014, Barak et al. Nature neuroscience 2013). Highly motivated Molecular Neuroscientist candidates that will be graduating within the next year are encouraged to apply. Candidates must have a proven track record state of the art molecular biology techniques. Preference will be given to candidates with a solid background in signal transduction. The position offers an opportunity to be part of a collaborative team at the vibrant research community at the UCSF Mission Bay campus.

Harvard Medical School and Cancer Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Postdoctoral position(s) available on spring/summer 2017

Our lab studies how cancer cells develop drug resistance, and more specifically, how tumor microenvironment provides support and protection for tumor cells. Our aim is to develop better treatment strategies to overcome this tumor microenvironment mediated drug resistance.
 
To investigate these topics we utilize both normal and cancer cells in 3D organoid culture systems, which mimic the architecture and organization of tissues. We use this platform in co-culture systems to understand how stromal and epithelial cells communicate with each other, and have also adopted the use of organoids for larger scale methodologies, such as proteomics, metabolomics, RNA-seq and ribosome foot-printing experiments to gain insight into multiple mechanisms by which cancer cells become drug resistant in 3D environments.
 
Our group is located in the Longwood medical area, at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, with several established collaborations with groups in the Harvard Medical School, MIT, Yale, Weill Cornell and MD Anderson. This environment provides unique opportunities for performing cutting-edge science, training in state-of-the-art technologies, forming new collaborations, and developing new technologies.
 
We are looking for highly motivated individual(s) who have recently finished their PhD, with excellent communication and critical thinking skills, and who are able to work as part of a team. Training in cell biology, molecular biology and microscopy, and basic understanding of cell signaling networks is required.

Requirements 
We are looking for a doctoral student to join Immunoregulation group that investigates how the Proprotein Convertase (PCSK) enzymes regulate the immune system (see for example
J Immunol. 2014 Dec 1, Oncotarget. 2016 Aug 5  andOncoImmunology Vol 5, 2016). A successful candidate has MSc degree/equivalent, is self-motivated, curious and interested in the mechanisms of immunity. Previous experience in biomedical research techniques, such as cell culture, FACS and/or in vivo models is advantageous.

Salary
The salary will be based on the demand level chart for the teaching and research staff of Finnish Universities. The preliminary level of demand is 2-4. In addition to the basic salary, a supplementary salary component will be paid according to the personal performance. There is a four month’s trial period in the beginning of the employment.

Nuoremman tutkijan/tohtoriopiskelijan tehtävä, A.I. Virtanen -instituutti, Kuopion kampus

Nuoremman tutkijan/tohtoriopiskelijan tehtävänä on väitöskirjatyön ja tutkimuksen tekeminen Suomen Akatemian rahoittamassa tutkimusprojektissa ”Aivojen molekulaarinen magneettikuvaus hyperpolarisoituja 13C-molekyylejä käyttäen – Molecular imaging of brain using hyperpolarised 13C MR”. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on kehittää uusia aivotoiminnan kuvantamiseen sopivia molekulaarisia magneettikuvausmenetelmiä käyttäen hyperpolarisoituja 13C-leimattuja merkkiaineita. Tutkimuksessa kehitetään uusia menetelmiä veriaivoesteen vuotojen, aivojen pH sekä aivoaktivaation seurausten kuvantamiseksi terveissä ja vauriosta kärsivissä aivoissa.

Hakijalla edellytetään olevan soveltuva alempi (tohtoriopiskelija) tai ylempi korkeakoulututkinto (nuorempi tutkija), mielellään fysiikasta, lääketieteestä tai biotieteistä. Aiempi kokemus magneettikuvauksesta tai työskentelystä eläinten kanssa on hyödyksi, mutta ei välttämätön.

Nuoremman tutkijan tulee olla jatkokoulutuskelpoinen, soveltuvan ylemmän yliopistotutkinnon suorittanut. Nuoremman tutkijan tehtävään otetaan aina määräajaksi (Itä-Suomen yliopiston johtosääntö 31§). Tohtoriopiskelijaksi voidaan ottaa henkilö, jolla yliopisto toteaa muutoin olevan opintoja varten riittävät tiedot ja valmiudet (yliopistolaki 37§).

Tehtävään vaadittavasta kielitaidosta on säädetty valtioneuvoston asetuksella 770/2009. Yliopiston opetus- ja tutkimustehtävää hoitavalta vaaditaan, että hän hallitsee sen kielen, suomen tai ruotsin, jolla hänen on annettava opetusta. Tiedekunnan dekaani voi myöntää erivapauden yliopistoasetuksen kielitaitovaatimuksiin. Tehtäviin liittyvä tutkimus ja opetus voi tapahtua myös englannin kielellä. Tähän tehtävään valittava tekee tutkimusta ja antaa opetusta englannin kielellä, joten hänellä on oltava erinomainen englannin kielen taito.

Tehtävä täytetään aluksi ajalle 1.2.2017–31.1.2018 (mahdollinen jatko 31.8.2019 saakka).

Tehtävän palkkaus määräytyy yliopistojen opetus- ja tutkimushenkilöstön palkkausjärjestelmän mukaisesti vaativuustasoille 1-4 (1 808,42 – 2 475,31 €/kk). Tehtäväkohtaisen palkanosan lisäksi maksetaan henkilökohtaiseen suoriutumiseen perustuvaa palkanosaa, joka on enintään 46,3 % tehtäväkohtaisesta palkanosasta. Palkkaus määräytyy valittavan henkilön koulutustason, väitöskirjatyön vaiheen ja henkilökohtaisen työssä suoriutumisen perusteella.

1-2 POST-DOC/SENIOR RESEARCHER POSITIONS IN AUTOIMMUNITY GENOMICS AND SINGLE CELL TRANSCRIPTOMICS

Dr. Päivi Saavalainen’s research group at Research Programs Unit at Meilahti campus is seeking for 1-2 post-docs or senior researchers in immunogenetics, genomics and transcriptomics of human gastrointestinal inflammations, with a special focus on single cell RNAseq methodologies. The main research targets and hypotheses include clonality and phenotypes of gluten specific T and B cells in celiac disease, as well as drug response biomarkers in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients on biological therapies. Extensive patient cohorts with existing exome/regulome/transcriptome NGS data are available or to be collected from both diseases. An ideal candidate holds a PhD degree in the fields of genetics, biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, bioinformatics or medicine. The candidate would be preferably skilled in and motivated on both wet lab work as well as analysis and interpretation of Illumina/Nanopore NGS data, but applications from pure bioinformaticians will be considered as well. Strong track record in genomics or transcriptomics fields, bioinformatics skills or background in immunological or microbiome studies will be highly appreciated. Successful candidate will also participate partly in the development of our local single cell RNAseq core facility (Drop-seq microfluidics), and in the management of new patient cohort collections.


The candidate is expected to be self-motivated and highly responsible with excellent scientific, troubleshooting, supervisory, communication and organization skills, as well as fluent in both spoken and written English. The salary will be based on education and experience according to the University salary system.

Jälleen kerran viruspainotteisen teemanumeron kunniaksi heitän heti aluksi pienen aivopähkinän ja ehdotan, että lukijat mietiskelevät hetken ovatko virukset oikeasti eläviä vai niin sanotusti kuolleita partikkeleita? Tämä kysymys jakaa mielipiteitä jopa itse virustutkimuksen alalla ja riippuen siitä mitä elämän kriteereitä tarkastellaan, virukset voidaan jakaa periaatteessa molempiin kategorioihin. Tämän teemanumeron aloitamme Janne Tynellin artikkelilla, jossa tutkimme influenssa A -viruksen vaikutusta isäntäsolujen tumakuljetukseen. Johanna Matilainen puolestaan kuvailee meille aggresomien muodostumista CVB3-infektioiden yhteydessä, ja Johanna Viiliäinen käyttää herpesvirusten ja ihmissolujen vuorovaikutusta oppaana syövän syntymekanismien metsästyksessä. Lopuksi Merja Helenius kertoo meille tutkijoiden immateriaalioikeuksista.

Marraskuussa tiedemaailmaa on järisyttänyt Donald Trumpin valinta seuraavaksi USA:n presidentiksi. Tiedeyhteisö on saanut seurata kauhunsekaisin tuntein tieteenvastaisen Trumpin lausahduksia, joissa hän välinpitämättömästi kieltää tunnettuja tieteen faktoja. Kohutuin näistä on tietenkin Trumpin näkemys ilmaston lämpenemisestä kiinalaisten orkestroimana huijauksena. Luonnollisesti seuraavaksi Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) – viraston johtajaksi Trumpin aikakaudella on povattu ilmastoskeptikko Myron Ebelliä. Varapresidentiksi valittu Mike Pence puolestaan on konservatiivinen kreationisti, joka ei usko evoluutioon. Seuraava Yhdysvaltojen administraatio voi siis seuraavan 4 vuoden aikana vaikuttaa hyvinkin negatiivisesti tieteeseen ja ilmastoon.

Toisella saralla, ilmastonmuutosta vastaan taisteleva Elon Muskin johtama sähköautojen valmistaja Tesla on hankkinut SolarCity-aurinkopaneelivalmistajan tehden näin Teslasta ensimmäisen kokonaan uusiutuvaa energiaa tarjoavan energiayhtiön. Näin ollen Tesla voi tarjota asiakkaille uusiutuvaa energiaa niin kotiin kuin autoonkin, taistellen näin ilmastonmuutosta vastaan.

Artikkeli 1. Influenssa A -virus ottaa haltuunsa isäntäsolun tumakuljetuskoneiston, Janne Tynell (FT)

Influenssa A -virus on siinä mielessä poikkeuksellinen RNA-virus, että sen replikaatio tapahtuu isäntäsolun tumassa. Viruksen ribonukleoproteiinikompleksien lisäksi useat virusproteiinit kuljetetaan infektion aikana tumaan ja osa niistä myös kuljetetaan aktiivisesti ulos tumasta. Yksi näistä tuman ja soluliman välillä sukkuloivista proteiineista on NS1, jolla on merkittäviä toimintoja sekä tumassa että solulimassa. Tässä artikkelissa käsitellään tapoja, joilla influenssa A -virus hyödyntää ja estää isäntäsolun tumakuljetuskoneiston toimintaa, käyttäen esimerkkinä NS1-proteiinia. Artikkeli pohjautuu kesällä hyväksyttyyn väitöskirjaani ’Virushost interactions of emerging respiratory pathogens’.

Artikkeli 2. Aggresomireitin aktivoituminen Coxsackievirus B3 -infektiossa, Johanna Matilainen (LuK)

Aggresomin muodostuminen on yksi solun puolustusmekanismeista, joka pyrkii estä- mään proteiinien haitallisen aggregoitumisen solulimassa. Aikaisemmat kokeet ovat näyttäneet, että ihmisen enterovirusinfektio aiheuttaa muutoksia vimentiinissä, tyypin III välikokoisessa filamentissa (Turkki ym., julkaisematon data). Nämä muutokset ovat hyvin samankaltaisia aggresomin muodostumisen aikana tapahtuvien muutoksien kanssa. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää mahdollisen aggresomin muodostumisreitin aktivoituminen Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) -infektiossa ja hypoteesimme oli, että häkkimäisten vimentiinirakenteiden muodostumisen lisäksi myös muita aggresomin muodostumisreitin aktivoitumiseen yhdistettyjä tapahtumia voidaan havaita CVB3-infektoiduissa soluissa. Tutkimme työssä näitä aggresomin muodostumiseen liittyviä solumuutoksia infektoiduissa soluissa käyttämällä immunofluoresenssivärjäystekniikoita ja konfokaalimikroskopiaa. Tuloksemme osoittivat, että CVB3- infektio aiheuttaa häkkimäisen vimentiinirakenteen muodostumisen. Infektio aiheuttaa lisäksi suuria rakenteellisia muutoksia solulimakalvostoon (ER) ja Golgin laitteeseen, sekä ubikitiinin ja lämpöshokki (Hsp) 70 -proteiinin siirtymisen perinukleaariseen tilaan. Tuloksemme viittaavat siihen, että aggresomireitti voi aktivoitua CVB3- infektiossa. Tietojemme mukaan aggresomireitin aktivoitumista ei ole aikaisemmin osoitettu tapahtuvan enterovirusten aiheuttamien infektioiden aikana. Vaikka enteroviruksia on tutkittu kauan, niiden lisääntymiskierron kaikkia eri vaiheita ei tunneta täysin. Tutkimuksemme tulokset tarjoavat uutta tietoa enterovirus-isäntäsolu -vuorovaikutuksista.

Artikkeli 3. Onkogeenisen herpesviruksen ja ihmissolun vuorovaikutus oppaana syövän syntymekanismien löytymisessä, Johanna Viiliäinen (FM väit.)

On arvioitu, että jopa 15 % syövistä olisi virusinfektioiden aiheuttamia. Syöpää aiheuttavia viruksia tunnetaan useita kuten esimerkiksi ihmisen papilloomavirus, jonka tietyt alatyypit aiheuttavat kohdunkaulan syöpää. Tai Kaposin sarkooma herpesvirus, jonka infektio voi johtaa Kaposin sarkooman syntymiseen immuunipuutteisilla yksilöillä. Nämä tuumorivirukset ovat oppineet pitkän yhteiselon myötä enemmän solubiologiasta kuin kaikki maailman tutkijat yhteensä ja toimivat siten arvokkaina työkaluina uusien syövän syntymekanismien selvittämisessä. Sen vuoksi on tärkeää tutkia kuinka tuumorivirus ja isäntäsolu ovat vuorovaikutuksessa ja erityisesti kuinka virukset ovat oppineet hyödyntämään solun mekanismeja mahdollistaakseen oman elämänsyklinsä.

Immateriaalioikeudet ovat aineettomia oikeuksia ja yleensä yksinoikeuksia. Usein suojan kohteella on taloudellista arvoa oikeuden haltijalle, joka voi luovuttaa tämän oikeuden toiselle korvausta vastaan ja myös hakea vahingonkorvausta oikeutta loukanneelta osapuolelta. Biolääketieteen tutkijalle merkittäviä niistä ovat varsinkin tekijänoikeus ja keksintöä suojaava patentti.

Two Postdoctoral Opportunities in Cancer Epigenetics

Two postdoctoral positions are immediately available within the Epigenetics Group at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), Lyon France, to study epigenetics and cancer. The Group conducts both epigenetic profiling and mechanistic studies, aiming to enhance our understanding of mechanisms of carcinogenesis and cancer etiology and to discover and validate new epigenetic biomarkers. It exploits new concepts in cancer epigenetics and recent technological advances in epigenomics.

 

1. Postdoctoral opportunity in epigenetic mechanisms and cancer development.

An important focus of the group is to investigate epigenetic mechanisms (DNA methylation and histone modifications) underlying cancer development and progression. This research line builds on the most recent knowledge of the cancer genome and epigenome, new concepts, and genomic databases. A postdoctoral opportunity is immediately available within the Group to apply state-ofthe-art molecular/cell biology and new functional genomic tools for mechanistic studies focusing on functionally important epigenetic “driver” genes (“epidrivers”) and associated molecular pathways. This also includes the development and application of in vitro models (for example, human and mouse immortalization models), new (epi)genome editing tools, and functional genomics. We also study interactions of epidrivers with selected known and suspected carcinogens (with focus on non-genotoxic “epigenetic” agents) that may play a role in tumour initiation and progression through epigenetic mechanisms. Candidates with a background in epigenetics, molecular biology,

and genome editing (such as CRISPR-Cas9 system) with a good command of English are encouraged to apply. Experience in, genome-wide shRNA screens and functional (epi)genomics would be an asset.


2. Postdoctoral opportunity in epigenetics and breast cancer.
Another focus of the group is to investigate how the epigenome (methylome) deregulation (epigenetic drift and/or methylation age acceleration) contributes to breast cancer development and to identify risk factors associated with these changes. We also aim to test whether breast cancer-specific methylome changes can be detected in circulating free DNA, and whether these epigenetic changes can serve as sensitive

biomarkers in prevention of breast cancer. Our approach includes cutting edge epigenomics, population-based cohorts, and innovative bioinformatics tools to investigate epigenomic profiles of cancer and surrogate tissues. Candidates with a solid background in epigenetics, molecular biology, and cancer research with a good command of English are encouraged to apply. Experience in molecular and epigenetic profiling (array- and/or Next-Generation Sequencingbased) and related data analysis and interpretation would be an asset.


Both postdoctoral opportunity is initially for one year with possibility of extension. The IARC stipend is currently €2750 per month. The cost of travel for the post-doc, and in certain circumstances for dependants, will be met, a dependant’s allowance paid, and health insurance covered. POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER AND DOCTORAL STUDENT POSITIONS
 
The open positions are in the fields of systems biology and translational cancer research in project funded by EU Horizon 2020 (HERCULES) and Academy of Finland (OVCURE). The goal of the HER-CULES project is to use cutting-edge single-cell measurement technologies and computational methods to identify drug resistant cell populations and develop combinatorial treatments to effectively kill drug resistant cancer cells. The goal of the OVCURE project is to develop and apply integrative computational methods to identify predictive models for treatment efficacy by taking an advantage of multi-level big omics data (e.g., transcriptomics, genomics, genetics, epigenetics, and proteomics jointly with clinical and functional information). Both projects are based on prospective ovarian cancer patient clinical samples taken before and after the treatment.
 
We are looking for an ambitious post-doctoral researcher and a doctoral student with strong enthusiasm towards science. A successful candidate has strong background in applied mathematics, machine learning, multivariate statistics, computer science, programming or bioinformatics. Basic understanding of cancer biology or genetics/genomics considered as an asset and ability to work together with medically/biologically oriented researchers is required.
 
Initial contract of employment will be done for minimum of two years and the starting date is to be agreed, preferably at spring 2017. Trial period of four months will be applied. Salary will be based on the Universities salary scheme for teaching and research personnel composed of both task specific and personal performance components. 
 
We offer an international multidisciplinary research environment with state-of-the-art facilities. The re-search will be carried out in the Systems biology of drug resistance in cancer research group in collaboration with highly skilled groups with complementary expertise in biochemistry, molecular biology, high-throughput molecular technologies, mathematical and computational modelling, and clinics. Three post-doc positions in Strasbourg

1:  Physiology and pathology of development and function of basal ganglia – towards understanding and treatment of neurologic diseases

The project:

The project aims at characterizing basic mechanisms of neurogenesis in developing and adult striatum with particular focus on retinoid receptor signaling. Relevance of obtained data for understanding etiology and physiopathology of neurologic disorders including in particular restless legs syndrome (RLS; one of the most frequent neurodevelopmental disorders) will be investigated using new genetic mouse model of disease. The project will be carried out at IGBMC (Strasbourg-Illkirch), an international research institute located in the heart of dynamic research region at crossroads of France, Germany and Switzerland. It will benefit from such location and state-of-the-art infrastructure and expertise in developmental biology, animal behavior and pharmacology, genomics and bioinformatics. In addition, close collaboration with world leaders in clinical research in RLS and neurodegeneration will be mandatory to identify relevance of obtained data for the clinical condition and test new strategies of therapy.

The applicant:

We are looking for highly motivated post-doctoral fellow with solid research experience in molecular and cell biology, and biochemistry (experience in developmental neurobiology, primary mammalian cell cultures or life imaging will be a great asset). Experience in work with rodent models is encouraged. Candidate must have at least one first author publication. 2. mechanism of depressive behaviors

The project:

The global aim of the project is characterization of neuron-glia interactions in animal models of depression using electrophysiological approaches combined with histological and molecular analyses and behavioral, and pharmacological studies. The relevance of obtained data for research into treatment resistant depression will be tested using dedicated animal model and molecular analyses on human material obtained through collaborations with specialists in psychiatry and pharmacology. The project will be carried out at IGBMC (Strasbourg-Illkirch), an international research institute located in the heart of dynamic research region at crossroads of France, Germany and Switzerland. The project will benefit from such location and state-of-the-art infrastructure and expertise in animal behavior and pharmacology, molecular, genomic and bioinformatics analyses.

3. A vitamin for neuroprotection

The project:

The project aims at characterizing mechanisms of neuroprotective activities of retinoid signaling. This multidisciplinary project emerging from close collaboration with chemists will include genomic analyses (RNAseq, ChIPseq, proteomics) combined with analyses of neuron-glia interactions, mitochondrial functions. Neuroprotective activities of selected candidate genes and new bioactive metabolites will be also tested.  The relevance of obtained data for research into neurodegenerative diseases will be determined using dedicated animal models, human cells cultured in vitro and human material obtained through collaborations with specialists in neurology. The project will be carried out at IGBMC (Strasbourg-Illkirch), an international research institute located in the heart of dynamic research region at crossroads of France, Germany and Switzerland. The project will benefit from such location and state-of-the-art infrastructure and expertise in animal behavior and pharmacology, molecular, genomic and bioinformatics analyses.

The applicant:

We are looking for highly motivated post-doctoral fellows who correspond to either of the following profiles: 1) solid research experience in biochemistry, mitochondrial biology and molecular biology or 2) solid research experience in genomic, bioinformatics analyses with an interest in extending his/her experience to developmental or molecular neurobiology. Experience with neural stem cells and primary neuronal cultures or studies of microglia cells are strongly encouraged. Candidate must have at least one first author publication. The ability to work in an English speaking team and good communication skills are required. a Postdoctoral Researcher position School of Pharmacy, Kuopio Campus

A person to be appointed as a postdoctoral researcher shall hold a suitable doctoral degree. Positions of postdoctoral researchers shall always be filled for a fixed term (UEF Administrative Regulations 30 §). The doctoral degree should be in cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacy, or an equivalent closely related field.

The doctoral degree may not have been completed more than five years ago at the time of accepting the position. In this context, the 5 years refer to a net period of time, which does not include maternity leaves, parental leaves, or military service, etc.

The language requirements associated with the position are defined in the Government Decree 770/2009. Members of the university’s teaching and research staff are required to have command of the language they give teaching in (Finnish or Swedish). The Dean of the faculty may grant an exemption from the language proficiency requirements laid down in the Government Decree.

The research group (http://www.uef.fi/eye/io) constitutes part of the emerging research areas identified in the strategy of the university. We are looking for an energetic and committed researcher to work on research projects focused on revealing mechanisms of age-related macular degeneration and developing new therapy options for the disease. The work will include determination of cellular responses and deciphering intracellular signalling.

We are primarily looking for a researcher with solid experience in cell laboratory work, capability of planning research projects, as well as ability to perform fluently basic protein chemistry and immunology methodology. An organised, independent, and problem-solving working attitude is expected, and the applicant should have an ambition for improving existing methodology. Our group offers a chance to work together with both basic researchers and clinicians in a truly translational setting.

The position will be filled initially for one year preferably from 1.4.2017 to 31.3.2018. Positions of postdoctoral researchers shall always be filled for a fixed term (UEF Administrative Regulations 30 §).

The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities and is based on level 5 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff (€2.865.30/ month). In addition to the job requirement component, the salary includes a personal performance component, which may be a maximum of 46.3% of the job requirement component.
