Mikrobiologisessa laboratoriossamme laadunvarmistuksen tehtävissä työskentelee noin 10 ammattilaista. Postdoctoral Researcher in Biochemistry / Enzymology
Research description
The goal is to functionally express and test key enzymes for the conversion of CO2 to fuels. The postdoc position is focussed on metalorganic enzymes involved in the transfer of alkyl-groups, which require oxygen-sensitive cofactors harbouring reduced metal centres, such as Co or Ni. The actual research is on a fundamental level, but the long-term goal is designing new routes to generate renewable fuels from CO2.
Research is carried out at our excellent facilities at Aalto University, School of Chemical Engineering (http://www.bioeconomyinfra.fi/). The laboratories are situated on the main campus of Aalto University in Otaniemi (short metro-ride from Helsinki) within the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems (https://www.aalto.fi/en/department-of-bioproducts-and-biosystems).
Your experience and ambitions

Kuvaus projektista
Etsimme väitöskirjatutkijaa syövän hoitoresistenssiä tutkivaan projektiin.
Työskentely tapahtuu Turun proteomiikayksikössä ja Cancer Therapy Resistance -laboratoriossa. Molemmat laboratoriot sijaitsevat Biocityssä, Turussa, ja ovat sidoksissa Turun yliopistoon. Väitöskirjatutkija tulee työskentelemään osana monitieteistä ja kansainvälistä tutkimusryhmää. Tehtävä voidaan painottaa kokeelliseen tai laskennalliseen suuntaan, riippuen valitun henkilön osaamisesta.
Projekti keskittyy syöpäsolujen adaptaatioon BRAF-targetoituihin hoitoihin melanoomassa. Työtehtäviin sisältyy latentin hoitoresistenssin solulinja- ja xenograft-mallien, sekä BRAF-targetoitua hoitoa saaneiden melanoomapotilaiden jäännöskasvaimien karakterisaatio hyödyntäen yksisolu-transkriptomiikkaa ja -proteomiikkaa, targetoituja genomieditointi-tekniikoita ja muita nykyaikaisia solu- ja molekyylibiologian tekniikoita.
Työ tarjoaa kiinnostavia haasteita, dynaamisen työympäristön, pääsyn viimeisimpään tutkimusinfrastuktuuriin sekä mahdollisuuden kehittää uusia uraauurtavia yksisolu-tekniikoita.
Tehtävän edellytykset
Vaadittu osaaminen
- Maisterin tutkinto biotieteiden alalta (esim. Biokemia, biolääketiede tai bioinformatiikka) tai LL tutkinto. Myös pian valmistuvat FM tai LL -opiskelijat huomioidaan.
- Tehtävään haetaan ensisijaisesti väitöskirjatutkijaa tai projektitutkijaa. Mikäli tehtävään valittu henkilö on vasta viimeistelemässä maisterin tutkintoa, tehtävänimike on tutkinnon suorittamiseen saakka tutkimusavustaja.
- Englannin kielen erinomainen osaaminen, sekä kirjallisesti että suullisesti, on välttämätöntä.
- Aiempi kokemus solu- tai molekyylibiologiasta.
Seuraavat taidot katsotaan eduksi:
- Ohjelmointitaidot (esim. R tai Python).
- Kokemus soluviljelytekniikoista.
- Kokemus hiirimalleista.
Tehtävän kelpoisuusvaatimuksista on säädetty Turun yliopiston johtosäännössä. Mikäli tehtävään valittavalla ei ole tohtorintutkinnon opinto-oikeutta tehtävään valittaessa, tehtävä täytetään aluksi nimikkeellä projektitutkija 31.5.2023 asti ja tohtorintutkinnon opiskeluoikeutta haetaan seuraavassa mahdollisessa haussa (kevät 2023). Valintakriteerimme perustuvat pätevimmän ja sopivimman hakijan löytämiseen. Käytännössä tämä tarkoittaa, että koulutuksen, julkaisujen ja työkokemuksen lisäksi yksilökohtaiset ominaisuudet, motivaatio, kielitaito ja muut relevantit kriteerit otetaan huomioon.
Palkkaus ja työsuhteen kesto
Työ alkaa 1.3.2023, tai sovitun mukaisesti. Väitöskirjatutkijan nimikkeellä työsopimus on määräaikainen vuoden 2025 loppuun ja sitä voidaan jatkaa mahdollisuuksien mukaan. Tehtävässä on kuuden (6) kuukauden koeaika.
Palkka määräytyy yliopistojen työehtosopimuksen perusteella. Tehtävä kuuluu tutkimushenkilökuntaamme, ja palkka väitöskirjatutkijalle tai projektitutkijalle on noin 2500-2800€/kk ja tutkimusavustajalle noin 2032 -2280€/kk.

TEMPADAPT (Single-molecule visualization of temperature adaptation in sub-cellular dynamics and organization across bacteria) is a 5-year ERC-funded project in the laboratory of Jarno Mäkelä at the Institute of Biotechnology, from 2023 onwards. The project will aim at understanding temperature adaptation at the single molecule level in live bacteria. We will study bacteria thriving at 0°C (psychrophiles), moderate temperatures (mesophiles), and high temperatures up to 100°C (thermophiles). In addition to state-of-the-art super-resolution microscopy, the project will apply single-cell perturbations, machine learning and modelling to analyze, integrate, and make sense of single-cell and molecule level data.

A Doctoral Researcher in Super-Resolution Microscopy and Microbiology
starting from January 2023, or as agreed. The PhD researcher will be offered up to 4-year fully funded contract.
Position description
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated doctoral researcher, who is interested in super-resolution microscopy and single-particle tracking, to join our research group for an ERC-funded project. The project involves planning and executing experimental work including state-of-the-art microscopy, genetic engineering, RNA-sequencing, data analysis, machine learning, and modelling to unravel how bacteria adapt to different temperatures. Our team will work on multiple topics at the interface of physics, chemistry, and biology: intracellular spatial organization, macromolecular crowding, liquid-liquid phase separation, heat- and cold shock protein dynamics, and gene regulation.
The appointee is expected to work full time on the Ph.D. thesis and to complete the thesis and the associated studies in four years. The successful applicant will apply to be a Ph.D. student in the appropriate Faculty. The Ph.D. degree consists of the student’s research project resulting in peer-reviewed publications, studies specific to the research field, as well as transferable skills training.
Selection criteria
A successful candidate will have a MSc or equivalent in biology, biophysics, computational biology, or other relevant fields, and has demonstrated a keen interest in quantitative approaches. Previous experience in ‘wet’ lab work, genetic engineering, microbiology, fluorescence microscopy, Python/R/Matlab coding, bioinformatics, or data analysis is considered an advantage. Excellent communication and writing skills in English and ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary international team are expected. The candidate should have outstanding organization and time management skills.
Salary and benefits
The starting salary of the doctoral researcher will be 2400-2600 euros/month, depending on the appointees’ qualifications and experience. A trial period of 6 months will be applied. Haemme lääketehtaamme osaavaan ja kasvavaan joukkoon tuotannon operaattoreita Bufferin, Upstreamin, Downstreamin sekä Drug Productin tiimeihin.
Taustaltasi voit olla esimerkiksi laborantti, bioanalyytikko, vastavalmistunut maisteri (esim. kemia, solu- ja molekyylibiologia, biolääketiede) tai prosessiteollisuuden perustutkinnon suorittanut.
Buffer-tiimissä valmistamme kaikki tuotannossa käyttämämme liokset, Upstream-tiimissä aloitamme tuotantoprosessin soluviljelyllä ja jatkamme solujen kasvattamista bioreaktoreissa. Prosessin aikana solut infektoidaan ja lopulta kerätään talteen. Upstreamista tuote siirtyy Downstream-tiimille, joka puolestaan puhdistaa tuotteen kromatografisilla menetelmillä niin, että tuote on vihdoin valmis täytettäväksi lääkepulloihin. Drug Product -tiimi keskittyy aseptiseen täyttämiseen ja tuotteen loppuvaiheen toimenpiteisiin kuten formulointiin, fillingiin sekä pakkaamiseen liittyviin toimintoihin. Drug Product -tiimissä taustasi voi olla myös esimerkiksi farmaseutti.

We are looking for a knowledgeable and growing group of Technicians to our production plant for various Manufacturing operations.
For example, you may have a background as a laboratory assistant, bioanalyst, process worker, or equipment maintainer. We have four teams in production and we are seeking new reinforcements as our operations grow rapidly. In the Buffer team, we prepare all the solutions we use in production, in the Upstream team, we start the production process with cell culture and continue by growing the cells in the bioreactors. During the process, the cells are infected and eventually harvested. From Upstream, the product is transferred to the Downstream team, which in turn purifies the product using chromatographic methods so that the product is finally ready to be filled into glass vials. Our Drug Product team focuses on aseptic filling and final stage measures e.g. formulating, filling and packaging.
You will succeed in the tasks if you are precise and systematic in your work approach and you are not afraid of equipment or challenges / changing situations. We are looking for a person who enjoys to work in hands-on laboratory work with heavy documentation that if familiar in our field of pharmaceutical manufacturing. We have English as a working language, so you must have a good command of oral and written English. Above all, however, we are looking for nice colleagues with a can-do attitude. We work in 2 shifts and partly also on weekends. In the future work may be done in 3-shifts.

You will work together with our Production and Engineering teams to ensure Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) compliance as we expand our facilities and increase the volume of our GMP production. Bioprocess engineer ja Scientist
Yhtiön kasvaessa haemme useampaa henkilöä tuotanto- ja laboratoriotehtäviin. Tehtävässäsi tulet keskittymään lääkeaineiden puhdistusprosesseihin, jossa työtehtäväsi on proteiinien ja geeniterapiatuotteiden puhdistuksen suunnittelu ja toteuttaminen. Puhdistusprosessit toteutetaan pääasiassa kromatografia ja suodatus (TFF) -menetelmillä.
Tehtävissä työ muodostuu yksilöllisesti osaamisalueittesi ja kokemuksesi mukaan, ja voi olla
Bioprocess engineer tehtävässä esimerkiksi:
- Osallistua lääkeainetuotannon työhön, joka tehdään kehityslaboratoriossa ja puhdastiloissa. Osassa työtehtävissä vaatimuksena on korkean aseptiikan osaaminen ja ymmärrys.
- Osallistua materiaalien siirto- ja valmisteluprosesseihin
- Osallistua laitteiden sanitointeihin, kalibrointeihin ja kvalifiointeihin.
- Tuottaa tarvittava dokumentointi prosessista yhdessä tiimin kanssa
Scientistin tehtävässä esimerkiksi:
- Osallistua lääkeainetuotannon työhön ja sen suunnitteluun, joka tehdään kehityslaboratoriossa ja/tai puhdastiloissa.
- Toimia asiantuntijana lääkeaineiden puhdistusprosesseissa

Odotamme insinöörin tehtävään ammatillista loppututkintoa (esim. Bioalan insinööri tai vastaava) ja tutkijan tehtävään akateemista loppututkintoa (esim. biokemisti tai vastaava) tai pitkän linjan kokemusta vastaavasta työstä. Odotamme käytännön kokemusta laboratorio- ja/tai puhdastilaympäristöstä.
Toivomme sinulta kokemusta lääketeollisuudesta ja lisäksi vahvaa osaamista jollakin alla mainitusta osa-alueesta sekä asiantuntemusta useimmista niistä:
- Aseptinen työskentely
- Puhdastilatyöskentely
- Laboratoriotyöskentely
- Rekombinanttiproteiininen tai virusvektorivalmisteiden puhdistaminen ja käytännön kokemus kromatografialaitteistoista
- Kokemus GMP:stä
Olet työskentelytyyliltäsi tarkka, järjestelmällinen, reipas ja toimelias henkilö. Sinulla on myös hyvät vuorovaikutus- ja ryhmätyötaidot.

Open position for a Postdoctoral researcher in Bioengineering and Stem Cell Biology
The laboratory of Professor Pekka Katajisto at the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences and Institute of Biotechnology, HiLIFE at the University of Helsinki, Finland, and at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, is looking for a postdoctoral researcher with bioengineering background to study effects of the extracellular niche on stem cell function.
Katajisto group (www.katajisto-lab.com) is part of the Centre of Excellence in Stem Cell Metabolism, MetaStem, and studies stem cell extrinsic and intrinsic mechanisms of tissue renewal and aging. We have for example discovered how age-induced alterations in the stem cell niche reduce tissue repair (Pentinmikko, Nature 2019, Science Advances 2022; Iqbal, BioRxiv 2021), and how cellular metabolism drives cell fate decisions after asymmetric cell divisions (Katajisto, Science 2015; D hla, Nat Cell Biol 2022)
We seek postdoctoral researchers to an ERC-funded project probing how the geometry of the niche influences cell fate decisions using bioengineered scaffolds to modify tissue topology. The project involves development of novel research techniques and assays, and will be facilitated by state-of-the art maskless photolithography instrumentation dedicated to the project.
Applicants with a doctoral degree, and a strong background in tissue/bioengineering or biotechnology are encouraged to apply. The position includes research and experimental work as well as setting up, maintaining, and running instruments used to develop 3D scaffolds for tissue regeneration and stem cell studies. Experience with cell biology, tissue culture or stem cells is considered a benefit. Candidates are also encouraged to start new projects and research directions. Applicants must be able to work as part of a team as well as independently, have good social skills and communication skills in English.
The appointment will be for 3 years with the possibility of continuation. A trial period of 6 months will be applied. The monthly starting salary will be determined according to the salary system at the employment unit.
