Senior researcher / Postdoctoral researcher, Development of risk-benefit assessments for foodborne exposures – Finnish Food Authority, Helsinki

4.11.2025 | Avoimet työpaikat

Apply latest by 3.12.

https://duunitori.fi/tyopaikat/tyo/senior-researcher-postdoctoral-researcher-development-of-risk-benefit-assessments-for-foodborne-exposures-svsal-19717938?utm_source=loimu&utm_medium=site

Job Description

Finnish Food Authority is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to join the Risk Assessment Unit. The position focuses on food safety risk assessment combined with benefit assessment.

This postdoc position is part of Postdoctoral Programme for Research Institutes in Finland. The Programme is funded from the Finnish long-term research and development (R&D) plan. The Programme recruits 85 new postdoctoral researchers to 12 Finnish government research institutes between 2025 and 2028. The aim of the Programme is to strengthen R&D competence in areas important to society and business. Postdoctoral researchers will drive impactful, high-level research bridging science, industry, and administration. The Programme supports postdoctoral researcher’s networking and mobility between sectors.

Risk-benefit assessment (RBA) is crucial when decisions affecting food consumption may have simultaneous effects on microbiological and chemical hazards as well as on nutrient intake. Conducting comprehensive risk-benefit assessments requires the continuous development of assessment methods, both internationally and in situations specific to Finland. For example, the guidance document of the European Food Safety Authority on risk-benefit assessment of foods only covers chemical risk-benefit assessments. International research is progressing with many RBA applications, from which Finland can also benefit by participating in the development. The work will build on already published assessments where the Risk Assessment Unit of Finnish Food Authority has been a partner.

The postdoctoral researcher will be developing methods for comparing chemical and microbiological risks using DALY metrics and investigating other alternative metrics and approaches for comparison of different types of health effects occurring at different timescales. Inclusion of zoonotic effects can be a possible addition, depending on the field of the postdoctoral researcher’s doctoral thesis. We anticipate that the work will involve comparing and combining top-down (population attributable fraction to effects) and bottom-up (exposure and dose response) assessments in risk comparisons. The postdoctoral researcher will also be responsible for collecting data and applying methods to selected food groups, hazards, risks, and benefits.

Scientific publishing of the developed methods and the assessment results is an essential part of the duties. The postdoctoral researcher is also expected to co-operate with risk managers (i.e. the users of the project outputs) throughout the project, and to contribute to the application of further research funding.

Salary

Demand level 9 (4111.95 e/month) + up to 50% personal performance-based supplement (typically 14-20% for new employees).

Postdoctoral Researcher in Microbial Epigenetics – University of Jyväskylä

2.8.2024 | Avoimet työpaikat

https://ats.talentadore.com/apply/postdoctoral-researcher-in-microbial-epigenetics/Z9Lg0l

Apply latest by 16th of August

About the job

The Department of Biological and Environmental Science is currently seeking to recruit staff to the position of Postdoctoral Researcher in Microbial Epigenetics, starting on 1st of September 2024 or as agreed, for a maximum fixed term of three years.

The genetics, epigenetics, and evolution group lead by Ilkka Kronholm studies the properties of mutations and spontaneous epigenetic changes, parental effects, and genetic architecture of complex traits. Our research questions are focused on understanding how different intrinsic and extrinsic factors affect evolutionary adaptation. As model systems we use bacteria, fission yeast, and the filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa.

The researcher will join a Research Council of Finland funded project that studies the role of adenosine methylation in adaptation. Studies in evolutionary epigenetics have largely focused on cytosine methylation in eukaryotes. However, in bacteria adenosine methylation is an important epigenetic mechanism that is known to play a role for example, in bacterial phase variation. We have observed that adenosine methylation changes happen when bacterial populations adapt to a new environment, see for example: Bruneaux et al. 2021. Roles of adenine methylation and genetic mutations in adaptation to different temperatures in Serratia marcescens. Epigenetics 17: 861-881   https://doi.org/10.1080/15592294.2021.1966215 and Bruneaux et al. 2022. The effect of a temperature-sensitive prophage on the evolution of virulence in an opportunistic bacterial pathogen. Molecular Ecology 31: 5402-18 https://doi.org/10.1111/mec.16638.

In this project we will study adenosine methylation changes in more detail and estimate genome wide the rates of spontaneous adenosine methylation changes using mutation accumulation experiments and Nanopore / PacBio sequencing. Our group has previously done mutation accumulation experiments in fungi see: Villalba de la Peña et al. 2023. Chromatin structure influences rate and spectrum of spontaneous mutations in Neurospora crassaGenome Research 33: 1-13 https://doi.org/10.1101/gr.276992.122.

In this project we will also characterise different adenosine methyltransferases present in bacterial genomes, and investigate whether adenosine methylation plays any role in antibiotic resistance and its evolution. For general background on adenosine methylation in bacteria see: Sánchez-Romero & Casadesús 2020. The bacterial epigenome. Nature Reviews Microbiology 18: 7-20 https://doi.org/10.1038/s41579-019-0286-2.

While the postdoctoral researcher is expected to contribute to the current project, and jointly supervise students, there is also the possibility to develop your own interests within the framework of the project or to participate in teaching if the researcher so wishes.
