Postdoc Fellow Scholarship in Research of the Evolution of Multicellularity at the Medical Faculty, Lund University, Sweden

17.10.2018 | Ajankohtaista
Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has 42 000 students and 7 400 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition. The Faculty of Medicine is a part of Lund University, and is responsible for education and research within medicine and healthcare. Our academic programs are closely linked with the healthcare system and are firmly anchored in the faculty’s strong research tradition. Our research spans a broad field within experimental preclinical research, near-patient clinical research and health sciences research. The Faculty of Medicine, with its 1,800 employees and 2,700 students in Lund and Malmö, is a knowledge-intensive meeting place for students, teachers and researchers from all over the world.

The Department of Laboratory Medicine is one of six departments at Lund University’s Faculty of Medicine. In addition to leading world-class research within cancer and genetics, we also utilize tumors as models to explore the success and evolution of multicellularity over Earth history. These explorations are conducted in collaboration with expertise at departments at the Faculty of Natural Sciences.

Scholarship
Animals are the most successful versions of multicellular life on Earth, in terms of size and complexity. However, exactly why this success came about remains enigmatic. External factors are often invoked, like an increase of free oxygen. In contrast, we focus on the evolutionary changes within tissue that may have facilitated the success.

Our overall aim onwards is to test implications of the hypothesis of refined stemness control (Hammarlund et al., 2018), and to further explore the model with particular focus on oxygen and carbonic anhydrases. Newly defined questions can be explored within cell- and molecular biology techniques (e.g. RNA-sequencing, cell culturing, immunohistochemistry), bioinformatics, and in vivo biological experiments. In addition, the explorations would involve broad literature studies.

We seek a brave and ambitious postdoc willing to explore uncharted scientific terrain.

Qualifications required
1. The applicant should have an interest in the evolution of life and broad experience in biology or of geobiological questions.

2. Applicant should hold a PhD degree (after 2015-11-01) in the biological sciences with experience in transcription factor regulation, bioinformatics and/or wet lab experiments.

3. Familiarity with processes pertaining to biomineralization is an advantage.

4. The applicant should be used to defining and exploring research questions independently.

5. An ambitious scholar, keen on learning.

6. Good communication skills and be able to interact efficiently in a team.

7. Excellent spoken and written English.
The applicant should not have been employed by Lund University within the last two years in order to be able to receive a scholarship. PhD degree should not be more than three years old at the last day of applying.

Last day for applying: 1st of November.
