A graduate student/postdoctoral fellow position in Developmental Neurobiology
Site of research: Molecular and Integrative Biosciences Research Program, Faculty of Biological and environmental Sciences, Viikki Biocenter, University of Helsinki
Title of the project: Brainstem neurons behind mood, memory and motivation – from development to behavioral control
Background and aim: Brainstem nuclei are critically important for regulation of mood, motivation and voluntary movements. Abnormal function of these neurons is involved in neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression, addiction, schizophrenia and Parkinson’s disease. Unlike the brainstem dopaminergic and serotonergic neurons, the other brainstem neurons, including inhibitory GABAergic neurons, are very poorly understood. Using techniques, such as single cell mRNA sequencing and gene modified mice, we have revealed a framework for development of the main brainstem GABAergic neuron groups.
Having identified the cell types, we can now address the following questions:
How are these brainstem GABAergic neuron subgroups incorporated into brain circuits?
How do they regulate mood, memory, motivation and movement?
An enthusiastic post-doctoral fellow/student can join our group to study these questions.
Funding: The project in funded by the Academy of Finland. The salary is based on the University of Helsinki salary scale.
Timing: The post-doctoral fellow contract until 31.8.2019, with possible extension.
Application details: Application should include a letter of motivation, CV with the list of publications and contact information of at least two persons for references. The dead-line for applications is October 22nd, 2018. Contact for inquiries and applications: Prof. Juha Partanen (Juha.M.Partanen@Helsinki.Fi), Molecular and Integrative Biosciences Research Program, Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences, 00014-University of Helsinki, Finland.

Postdoctoral positions in the group of Pontus Aspenström at the Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University (www.igp.uu.se ). The Department has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on cancer, autoimmune and genetic diseases. A fundamental idea at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby closer interactions between medical research and health care. Research is presently conducted in the following areas: medical and clinical genetics, clinical immunology, pathology, neuro-oncology, vascular biology, radiation science and molecular tools. Department activities are also integrated with the units for Oncology, Clinical Genetics, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Pathology, and Hospital Physics at Akademiska Sjukhuset, Uppsala.
Work description:
Out group is studying the Ras-like family of Rho GTPases, which are key regulators of the actin filament system and thereby control vital cellular processes such as cell morphogenesis, cell polarity and cell migration. The work in our group is aimed to elucidate the Rho-dependent signalling mechanisms in health and disease. There are currently two positions on scholarships available in our group:
1. The research studies on this project will focus on the Miro GTPases, which are key players in mitochondrial homeostasis and functioning. Their importance in a physiological context also makes them significant proteins in the pathology of neurodegenerative diseases. Both proteins are linked, either directly or via downstream signalling partners, to the disease progression of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. The overarching aim of this project is to enhance the understanding of the function of Miro GTPases in neurodegenerative diseases.
2. The second project will focus on the role of the atypical Rho GTPases in cancer. This family of proteins are pivotal regulators of tumour cell migration and deregulated activity of Rho GTPases is often associated to poor prognosis of certain types of cancers. We are studying the role of the atypical Rho GTPases, which is a subclass of the Rho GTPases, in malignant mesothelioma and glioblastoma. The principal goal is to elucidate the mechanisms behind the derailed function of atypical Rho GTPases in cancer cell migration and metastasis.
Qualifications:
We are seeking a highly motivated, talented and well-educated researcher with a PhD degree awarded within the past three years in cell biology, neuroscience or in a related research topic.
Scholarships for carrying out postdoctoral research may be granted to persons living in other countries who come to Sweden with the intention of only staying in Sweden for all or part of their postdoctoral education. Persons who are resident in Sweden and/or have carried out all or part of their academic education at an educational institution in Sweden cannot be considered for scholarships. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish PhD or higher.
The application should include a CV, copies of diplomas including grades, publications and a short description of your research interests.
Merits:
The applicant should have a strong background in molecular cell biology and practical experience of standard cell biology techniques, including microscopy and imaging, is a prerequisite. Uppsala University values the qualities that even gender distribution and diversity add to the research environment. We therefore welcome applicants of any gender and with different birth background, functionality and life experience.
Application:
An application must contain the following documents in English:
1. Curriculum vitae and qualifications
2. A complete list of publications.
3. A summary of current research (no more than one page).
4. Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances.
5. Contact details for two reference persons.
The applications will be assessed based on eligibility requirements, achievements in related research areas, and personal suitability.
Scholarship:
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent. This educational scholarship is tax-exempt.
The amount is set for twelve months at a time and is paid out on a monthly basis.
Start date: As soon as possible.
