The University of Eastern Finland is inviting applications for an Early Stage Researcher position in Kuopio. As our new Early Stage Researcher, you will be working in the School of Pharmacy, at the Faculty of Health Sciences. The position is mainly located in Kuopio, Finland. The position includes a research visit abroad.
We are applying for a highly motivated professional to work in the Leinonen Retina Laboratory. The applicant will be working in a project that aims to solve basic mechanisms of homeostatic plasticity in the nervous system. The applicant will evaluate homeostatic plasticity and functional adaptation of the retina in response to damage to the sensory photoreceptors and subsequently the cellular mechanisms explaining the phenomenon. The research tasks include eye imaging and measurement of visual function in animal models, electrophysiological techniques, basic molecular biology assays as well as state-of-the-art bioinformatics methods such as single-cell RNA-sequencing. The project will be performed in close collaboration with the University of Utah (UofU, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA) and part of the data collection will be conducted during a research visit to UofU.
The research tasks will include:
Bioinformatics from proteomics and single-cell RNA-sequencing data
Basic molecular biology methods such as immunohistochemistry, western blotting, quantitative RT-PCR, RNA-sequencing
The position is initially filled for a fixed term of three years starting in January 2022, or as agreed. The position is full-time, enabling full-time work on the doctoral dissertation. Early Stage Researcher positions are always filled for a fixed term. A probationary period is applied to all new members of the staff.
The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system of the Finnish universities. The salary comprises two components: a job requirement component and a personal performance component. The Early Stage Researcher position is based on level 2 – 4 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff (2,078.27 – 2,591.28 €/month). The personal performance component can be a minimum of 6 % and a maximum of 50 % of the above-mentioned sum. The estimated salary in the beginning of the employment will be 2,300 – 2,800 €/month. As our new Early Stage Researcher you will be working at the A.I. Virtanen Insitutute for Molecular Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences. The position is located in Kuopio, Finland.
Untangling the wiring diagram of the human brain offers exciting new opportunities to better understand how our brains work and what kind of changes occur during various brain disorders, including mental and neurodegenerative diseases. Owing to recent advances in neuroimaging technology, particularly in diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), it is now possible to study the structural connectivity network of the brain. To that end, our group develops novel computational algorithms to process neuroimaging data and to analyse brain networks using signal processing and machine learning techniques. Coding plays a vital role in our research to enable clinical and widespread use of our tools. Software developed by our group have won several awards in previous international competitions.
We are looking for an Early Stage Researcher to work at the intersection of neuroscience and machine learning. The specific research topic is highly novel and it involves processing of MRI data and network analysis. The novel techniques that will be developed by the Early Stage Researcher will contribute to our software development effort as well. With that, we foresee a large number of clinical applications, Alzheimer’s disease being the potential primary target for investigation.
A person to be appointed as an Early Stage Researcher shall be qualified to pursue postgraduate studies, i.e. he or she is required to have completed a suitable higher university degree or an equivalent education abroad which in the country in question would qualify the person for similar academic studies.

We are now looking for a highly motivated Doctoral Student to join the research group of Rajaram Venkatesan in a project aiming to understand the structure and function of lipid transporting protein complexes in mycobacteria.
Description
Applications are invited for a full-time fixed-term doctoral student position in the research group of Rajaram Venkatesan in the Protein and Structural Biology Research Unit, at the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine. The Venkatesan research group works on the structural and functional aspects of enzymes and protein complexes involved in lipid metabolism and transport in human and pathogenic organisms. The Faculty provides an excellent environment for doing cutting edge research in protein science and structural biology with access to state-of-the-art facilities located at Oulu, Finland, as well as across Europe. The research project concerns the study of mammalian-cell-entry (Mce) complexes from mycobacteria to understand the assembly, structure and function. The main tasks of the research project include but is not limited to working on the structural characterization of the components of the Mce complexes using a variety of biophysical and structural methods. The position is a full-time fixed-term position with the current funding available for a period of two years.
Qualification requirements
The successful candidate for the doctoral student position must possess a Master´s degree in the field of protein science, biochemistry, biotechnology or related fields. The candidate should have a strong interest in structural, molecular and microbiology research. Previous demonstrated research experience in protein science and structural biology is considered a significant advantage. The selected candidate should be able to work independently as well as in a group with a drive to excel in research. Fluency in both written and spoken English is required. Most importantly, we expect the candidate to have a high motivation to conduct high-level biochemistry research.

The salary will be based on the demand levels 2-4 of the salary system of Finnish Universities for teaching and research personnel. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50% of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 2400 € per month.
