About the job

The Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Helsinki is excited to announce a fixed-term, full-time doctoral researcher position. The role commences on 1.09.2023, with flexibility on the starting date, and extends until 31.08.2027.

We are searching for a highly motivated and dedicated doctoral researcher to contribute to a pivotal project funded by the Academy of Finland. This study aims to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of acidocalcisome proteins responsible for phosphate regulation in protozoan parasites. We aim to assess these proteins’ potential as drug design targets through detailed structural and functional studies. Our successful candidate will employ state-of-the-art techniques such as x-ray cryo-EM and x-ray crystallography to probe the structure of acidocalcisome proteins and carry out biophysical and both in vitro and in vivo functional studies. Your work could significantly advance scientific understanding and contribute to the development of novel treatments for parasitic diseases like sleeping sickness and leishmaniasis.

Role Requirements

  • A Master’s degree or equivalent (e.g., licentiate), or imminent completion of such, preferably in life science, biochemistry, molecular and structural biology, or a related field.
  • Strong scientific curiosity, meticulous work ethic, and excellent time management.
  • Experience in basic lab techniques, including cloning, protein expression, and protein characterization.
  • Prior experience with protein structure determination via x-ray diffraction and/or cryo-EM, cell biology (especially Leishmania or Trypanosoma ), and/or biophysical techniques will be considered beneficial.
  • Excellent communication skills in spoken and written English.
  • The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Remuneration And Benefits

The starting salary will be set on level 2 of the national salary scale for teaching and research staff at Finnish universities, with a range of 2300-2700 euros/month (pre-tax). Salary progression to levels 2-4 will be contingent on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. A six-month trial period applies.
