Open position for a postdoctoral researcher to join the phage research team at Northumbria University, Newcastle, UK


We are now seeking applications from highly committed, motivated and talented postdoctoral researchers to join the phage research team at Northumbria University for a fixed term, 24 months project in collaboration with clinicians at the Great Northern Children’s hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne. This Action Medical Research funded project will characterise the intestinal virome of preterm, low-birthweight infants to determine bacteriophage groups that are present in the early gut flora in neonates.

The successful candidate will join a supportive grouping of bacteriophage biologists, virologist and microbial ecologists using novel culture-dependant and independent approaches to study bacteriophages in this in this low diversity microbial setting. The candidate should have an in-depth knowledge of bacteriophage biology/ecology with experience in handling bacteriophages in the laboratory. The candidate importantly requires previous experience in processing and analysing shotgun metagenomics data.  The ability to work in a command line environment and pipeline data would be a distinct advantage.
