a Postdoctoral Researcher (Neurosciences) position, Faculty of Health Sciences, A.I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences, Kuopio Campus
The Kanninen research group funded by Horizon 2020 and the Academy of Finland is seeking a motivated postdoctoral researcher to join a highly dynamic team of researchers working on multiple aspects of neurodegeneration and mental health. The group utilizes murine and human in vitro cultures of brain cells, mouse disease models and patient material to investigate molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurodegeneration and mental disorders. The group is particularly interested in the impact of environmental exposures on brain health. The successful candidate will work on EU- and nationally funded projects related to environmental exposure impacts on brain health. The topics of investigation include viral infection and air pollutant exposure effects on brain cell function. The candidate should have a PhD in neuroscience or a related discipline with experience in some of the following techniques:
- Primary cell culture
- Molecular biology techniques
- Single cell omics
- Biomarker discovery and validation
- Biostatistics
- Animal handling including drug administration, behavioural testing or microsurgery
Extensive experience in routine analytical techniques such as Western blot, qPCR or immunohistology are expected.
The successful candidate will be committed and motivated, display independent thinking skills, and possess the ability to work independently while supervising students. Experienced postdoctoral researchers are strongly encouraged to apply. A proven ability in supervising junior colleagues will be an advantage. The candidate must be willing to contribute to writing peer-reviewed publications and applications for research funding. Good knowledge of written and spoken English as well as meticulous record-keeping are required. The candidate will need to provide the contact details of at least two academic referees. The person to be appointed to the Postdoctoral Researcher Position is required to hold a doctoral degree, which may not have been completed more than five years ago at the time of accepting the position. In this context, the 5 years refer to a net period of time, which does not include maternity leaves, parental leaves, or military service, etc. Positions of postdoctoral researchers shall always be filled for a fixed term (UEF University Regulations, Section 31).
The position is filled for a fixed-term period from 19 October 2020 until 18 September 2021. The starting date of the position can be agreed. The position is filled for a fixed-term due to it pertaining to a specific project (Environmental factors and brain health project, 1.1.2020-18.09.2021).
A probationary period is applied to all new members of the staff.
The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities and is based on level 5 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff (€2,967.84/ month). In addition to the job requirement component, the salary includes a personal performance component, which may be a maximum of 50 % of the job requirement component.
