The Faculty of Health Sciences operates at the Kuopio Campus of the University of Eastern Finland. The Faculty offers education in medicine, dentistry, nutrition and pharmacy, as well as in some other central fields of the health care sector. The Faculty is research-intensive, and its internationally recognised research activities are closely linked to the strategic research areas of the University. We are now inviting applications for Postdoctoral Researcher (Neurosciences) position, Faculty of Health Sciences, A.I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences, Kuopio Campus The Kanninen research group funded by the Academy of Finland is seeking a motivated and experienced postdoctoral researcher to join a highly dynamic group of researchers working on multiple aspects of neurodegeneration. The group utilizes both murine and human in vitro cultures of brain cells and mouse models of disease to investigate molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurodegeneration. The group is particularly interested in mitochondrial dysfunction in Alzheimer’s disease and the impact of environment and life style factors on brain health. The candidate should have a PhD in Neuroscience or related discipline with experience in in vitro culture of neurons and/or glia. Candidates with experience in culture of stem cells are highly encouraged to apply. In addition, experience with calcium imaging, epigenetic techniques and in vivo experimentation are considered an advantage. Experience in routine biochemical assays and immunocytochemistry are expected.
The successful candidate will be committed and motivated, display independent thinking skills, and possess the ability to work independently while supervising students. Good knowledge of written and spoken English are essential. It is required that the applicant provides the names and contact details of at least two academic referees. Recommendation letters from referees are encouraged.
A person to be appointed as a postdoctoral researcher shall hold a suitable doctoral degree. Positions of postdoctoral researchers shall always be filled for a fixed term (UEF University Regulations, Section 31).
The person to be appointed to the Postdoctoral Researcher Position is required to hold a doctoral degree, which may not have been completed more than five years ago at the time of accepting the position. In this context, the 5 years refer to a net period of time, which does not include maternity leaves, parental leaves, or military service, etc. The position is filled for one year starting from 19.3.2018 or as agreed. The position is filled for a fixed term due to the duration of the project.
The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities and is based on level 5 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff (€2,865.30/ month). In addition to the job requirement component, the salary includes a personal performance component, which may be a maximum of 46.3% of the job requirement component.
