The University of Eastern Finland, UEF, is one of the largest multidisciplinary universities in Finland. We offer education in nearly one hundred major subjects, and are home to approximately 15,500 students and 2,700 members of staff. We operate in Joensuu and Kuopio. In international rankings, we are ranked among the leading universities in the world.

The Faculty of Health Sciences operates at the Kuopio Campus of the University of Eastern Finland. The Faculty offers education in medicine, dentistry, nutrition and pharmacy, as well as in some other central fields of the health care sector. The Faculty is research-intensive, and its internationally recognised research activities are closely linked to the strategic research areas of the University. There are approximately 2 500 degree students and about 450 PhD students in the Faculty. The faculty has 680 staff members. http://www.uef.fi/en/ttdk/etusivu

We are now inviting applications for

an Early Stage Researcher (Bioinformatics, Biomedicine) or a Postdoctoral Researcher position (Bioinformatics), School of Medicine, Institute of Biomedicine (Kuopio campus)

A position for a motivated early stage or postdoctoral researcher is available in the Academy of Finland funded project  “Transcriptional regulatory mechanisms of anti-inflammatory glucocorticoid signaling“ led by University Researcher Einari Niskanen (PhD, Docent) at the Institute of Biomedicine (School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Kuopio campus).

The project explores the molecular mechanisms of glucocorticoid signaling. The focus is on chromatin events that lead to transcriptional repression of inflammatory genes in macrophages. The project utilizes state-of-the-art mass spectrometry and genome-wide techniques in a tight association with modeling of transcriptional regulation. A researcher selected for this position will be using various bioinformatics approaches to model the transcriptional regulation in glucocorticoid and inflammatory signaling.

A person to be appointed as an early stage researcher shall be qualified to pursue postgraduate studies, i.e. he or she is required to have completed a suitable higher university degree or an equivalent education abroad which in the country in question would qualify the person for similar academic studies. Positions of early stage researchers shall always be filled for a fixed term (UEF University Regulations, Section 31).

Successful early stage researcher applicant has i) a MSc degree (or nearly completed) in bioinformatics, biomedicine, cell biology, or equivalent suitable field, ii) strong interest to science and commitment to completion of a doctoral degree, and iii) curiosity towards developing one’s bioinformatics skills. Prior experience (courses, MSc thesis project, work practice) on bioinformatics (e.g. analysis of genome-wide data) and programming are considered an advantage.

A person to be appointed as a postdoctoral researcher shall hold a suitable doctoral degree. Positions of postdoctoral researchers shall always be filled for a fixed term (UEF University Regulations, Section 31).

The person to be appointed to the Postdoctoral Researcher Position is required to hold a doctoral degree, which may not have been completed more than five years ago at the time of accepting the position. In this context, the 5 years refer to a net period of time, which does not include maternity leaves, parental leaves, or military service, etc.

Successful postdoctoral applicant has a doctoral degree (or nearly completed) in bioinformatics, computer sciences or equivalent suitable field, and a suitable track record of bioinformatics projects. Prior experience with next-generation sequencing data analysis, transcriptional regulation projects and machine learning applications are considered an advantage.

Good command of the English language is required.

The position of Early Stage Researcher is filled for a fixed term from 1.9.2020 to 31.8.2024 (or later by agreement). Post Doctoral Researcher position is filled for two years starting 1.10.2020 to 30.9.2022 (or later by agreement, possible extension to four years). The position is filled for a fixed term due to project work (the Academy of Finland funded project studying “Transcriptional regulatory mechanisms of anti-inflammatory glucocorticoid signaling“’).

The salary of the early stage researcher position is determined in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities and is based on levels 2 – 4 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff (€2,055.66 – 2,563.09/month).
The salary of the postdoctoral researcher position is determined in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities and is based on level 5 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff (2,967.84 €/month). In addition to the job requirement component, the salary includes a personal performance component, which may be a maximum of 50 % of the job requirement component.

For further information on the position, please contact University Rearcher Einari Niskanen, +358 29 445 4044, einari.niskanen@uef.fi (e-mail preferred).

The electronic application should contain the following appendices:
a résumé or CV  (max four pages)
a list of publications  (not expected from Early Stage Researcher applicant)
– copies of the applicant’s academic degree certificates/ diplomas, and copies of certificates / diplomas relating to the applicant’s language proficiency, if not indicated in the academic degree certificates/diplomas
– motivation letter (1-2 pages): What is your experience and expertise in bioinformatics projects? What motivates you as a researcher?
– Scientific and research merits (not expected from early stage researcher applicant)

The application needs to be submitted no later than Monday, 10.8.2020 (by 24.00 hours Finnish time) by using the electronic application form.
