The University of Eastern Finland, UEF, is one of the largest multidisciplinary universities in Finland. We offer education in nearly one hundred major subjects, and are home to approximately 15,500 students and 2,500 members of staff. We operate in Joensuu and Kuopio. In international rankings, we are ranked among the leading universities in the world.

The Faculty of Health Sciences operates at the Kuopio Campus of the University of Eastern Finland. The Faculty offers education in medicine, dentistry, nutrition and pharmacy, as well as in some other central fields of the health care sector. The Faculty is research-intensive, and its internationally recognised research activities are closely linked to the strategic research areas of the University. There are approximately 2 500 degree students and about 450 PhD students in the Faculty. The faculty has 680 staff members. http://www.uef.fi/en/ttdk/etusivu

We are now inviting applications for

an Early Stage Researcher (Cardiovascular Biology, Molecular Genomics) position, Faculty of Health Sciences, A.I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences, Kuopio Campus

The Cardiovascular Genomics Laboratory at the Faculty of Health Sciences, A.I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences, Kuopio, has an exciting opportunity for a PhD student in the field of Cardiovascular Biology and Molecular Genomics. The overall goal of the lab is to gain molecular level understanding of mechanisms that underlie the development metabolic disorders such as coronary artery disease. We employ a wide-array of next-generation sequencing methods (scRNA-Seq, GRO-Seq, TRAPSeq, bulk RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq) to study disease-associated gene regulatory mechanisms in cellular (primary human cells) and mouse models of disease. During the PhD project, the researcher will develop wetlab (e.g. cell culture, qPCR, (sc)RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq, CRISPR-screening, functional cell culture assays, immunohistochemistry, etc.) and computational skills (e.g. analysis of high-throughput sequencing data), providing the candidate an excellent skillset for a future interdisciplinary career either in academia or industry.

A person to be appointed as an early stage researcher shall be qualified to pursue postgraduate studies, i.e. he or she is required to have completed a suitable higher university degree or an equivalent education abroad which in the country in question would qualify the person for similar academic studies. Positions of early stage researchers shall always be filled for a fixed term (UEF University Regulations, Section 31).

We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and efficient researcher with an MSc in a relevant discipline and solid understanding of genetics and molecular and cellular biology. Furthermore, we expect basic laboratory skills and experience in molecular/cell biology techniques. Prior knowledge of the R programming language is viewed favourably but not required. Very good written and spoken English is important. The successful candidate will be capable of working independently while integrating into our highly international research team that works towards a common goal.

The position is filled for a fixed term starting from 1.2.2020 (or as agreed) until 31.12.2023. Position is filled for fixed-term due to the doctoral studies.
