The University of Eastern Finland, UEF, is one of the largest multidisciplinary universities in Finland. We offer education in nearly one hundred major subjects, and are home to approximately 15,500 students and 2,700 members of staff. We operate in Joensuu and Kuopio. In international rankings, we are ranked among the leading universities in the world.
The Faculty of Health Sciences operates at the Kuopio Campus of the University of Eastern Finland. The Faculty offers education in medicine, dentistry, nutrition and pharmacy, as well as in some other central fields of the health care sector. The Faculty is research-intensive, and its internationally recognised research activities are closely linked to the strategic research areas of the University. There are approximately 2 500 degree students and about 450 PhD students in the Faculty. The faculty has 680 staff members. http://www.uef.fi/en/ttdk/etusivuWe are now inviting applications for an Early Stage Researcher (Cardiovascular Genomics) position, at the University of Eastern Finland, Faculty of Health Sciences, A.I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences, Kuopio Campus.
The Cardiovascular Genomics Laboratory led by Associate Professor Minna Kaikkonen-Määttä at the A.I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences, in Kuopio https://uefconnect.uef.fi/en/group/cardiovascular-genomics-kaikkonen-lab/, has an exciting opportunity for a PhD student in the field of Cardiovascular Genomics. The overall goal of our lab is to elucidate cell-type specific mechanisms that underlie the development of atherosclerosis. We employ a wide array of next-generation sequencing methods to study disease-associated gene regulatory mechanisms in primary human cell cultures and mouse models of disease. Our research also makes use of large population cohorts (e.g. UK Biobank) to study mechanisms of disease susceptibility and gene-environment interactions. Here, our main interest is to understand the function of non-coding variants located within cell type specific regulatory elements (enhancers and promoters).
We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and efficient researcher with an MSc in a relevant discipline and solid understanding of genomics. Furthermore, we expect basic laboratory skills and experience in molecular/cell biology techniques. Good skills in the R programming language are required. Very good written and spoken English is important. The successful candidate will be capable of working independently while integrating into our highly international research team (currently 15 members) that works towards a common goal. A person to be appointed as an early stage researcher shall be qualified to pursue postgraduate studies, i.e. he or she is required to have completed a suitable higher university degree or an equivalent education abroad which in the country in question would qualify the person for similar academic studies. Positions of early stage researchers shall always be filled for a fixed term (UEF University Regulations, Section 31).
The position is filled for a fixed term from 1 January 2021 (or as agreed) to 31 December 2023. The position is filled for a fixed-term due to it pertaining to doctoral studies and to a specific project. The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities and is based on levels 2 – 4 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff (€2,055.66 – 2,563.09/month).
