The Head of Research & Development for MBD is a high-impact global R&D leadership role focused on advancing innovation and driving strategic goals across clinical, food, and pharmaceutical microbiology markets. Reporting to the Division President, this role is part of the MBD Leadership Team, the corporate R&D extended leadership team, and the divisional Growth Board. The position requires extensive experience in new product development, cross-functional team leadership, and aligning R&D strategy with business objectives.
This role is based in ideally within Basingstoke, UK or Vantaa, Finland, with regular travel to other sites as required. Open for candidates to commute on a regular basis / relocation.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & People Management
- Lead global R&D teams of 60+ staff, managing resources, talent development, and team culture.
- Build leadership bench strength and attract, develop, and retain top talent.
Strategy & Innovation
- Define and execute technology strategy and product innovation roadmap.
- Collaborate with Marketing, Operations, and R&D teams to drive internal and external innovation.
- Ensure customer-centric product development.
Technical & Program Leadership
- Oversee innovation, product development, and transformation projects, ensuring technical excellence and regulatory compliance.
- Manage product lifecycle, quality, and design history.
- Implement process improvements across multiple R&D sites.
Program Planning & Business Management
- Supervise R&D PMO to ensure projects meet cost, schedule, and quality targets.
- Evaluate the portfolio to align with strategic objectives and mitigate risks.
- Manage R&D budget, track performance, and report on product vitality.
Communication & Industry Engagement
- Engage with executive management, customers, and regulatory agencies on program status.
- Maintain industry presence through conferences, publications, and relationships with Key Opinion Leaders.
Qualifications
- Graduate degree, ideally Ph.D., in Microbiology or related scientific field.
- 10+ years of R&D experience in regulated environments (FDA, EMA), including 5+ years in in vitro diagnostics or related sectors.
- 10+ years of people leadership, with experience leading large teams globally.
- Proven track record in developing innovative products from concept to commercialization.
- Knowledge of GMP and regulatory compliance.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
- Ability to operate in a global, multicultural, matrixed environment.
