Nine postdoctoral researcher positions at the University of Eastern Finland – 9 tutkijatohtorin tehtävää
18.9.2017Nine Postdoctoral Researcher positions
The University of Eastern Finland (UEF) is a multidisciplinary university, which seeks to find solutions to global challenges through interdisciplinary research. The UEF has 9 open positions for postdoctoral researchers to carry out their research under the global challenges recognized in the strategy of the UEF:
- Ageing, lifestyles and health
- Learning in a digitised society
- The Cultural encounters, mobilities and borders
- Environmental change and sufficiency of natural resources
In the area of Ageing, lifestyles and health research focuses on Cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, neurosciences, translational cancer research, musculoskeletal disorders, bioinformatics in health sciences and drug targeting technologies (especially on ocular treatments). Research is carried out in multidisciplinary groups under the themes of prediction, prevention, diagnostics, therapy and care, as well as effectiveness and cost effectiveness.
In the area of Learning in a digitised society research focuses on the challenges of learning in the rapidly changing digitalised world, where people should be provided with the abilities of collaborative problem solving, critical and creative thinking, learning skills and information literacy. The research focus is on 1) intelligent and adaptive educational technology (modern teaching technologies and learning environments) and 2) learning of utilization of technologies in teaching and learning processes and 3) active learning in communities under the global transformations.
The Cultural encounters, mobilities and borders area focuses on 1) European borders and Russia, 2) mobilities and migration and 3) cultural and linguistic encounters. In this framework, scientific emphasis is on bordering (the multilevel process of creating political, social and cultural borders) as well as on related socio-cultural transformations and cultural encounters. Interdisciplinary profile combines the methodologies of the humanities and social sciences in order to enhance the formation of shared critical frameworks required to address the new and complex phenomena generated by increased globalisation.
The Environmental change and sufficiency of natural resources area focuses on 1) aerosols and climate change, 2) forests and the bioeconomy and 3) sustainable governance of natural resources. The research will provide novel means, solutions and tools for improving sufficiency and sustainable use of natural resources for the growing needs of the bioeconomy and the society as a whole under the changing operative environment (e.g. climate change).
The University of Eastern Finland invites applications for postdoctoral researcher positions in the research areas mentioned above. The most distinguished and well-suited candidates will be selected. Once selected, the main task of the postdoctoral researcher is to complete the research presented in the research proposal. The postdoctoral researcher will also participate in the supervision of academic theses in their post-doctoral researcher’s field of research, and give teaching in the field in question.
Successful applicants to the postdoctoral researcher positions will hold a doctoral degree, which may not have been completed more than five years before the application deadline (doctoral degree certificate must have been conferred between 20 Oct 2012 and 20 Oct 2017). Applicants who have completed their doctoral degree more than five years ago can be considered only for special reasons (maternity, paternity, parental or childcare leave, military service or non-military service). If the applicant pleads to the above mentioned reasons, he or she needs to explain them in the application. Successful applicants are expected to have experience on research mobility (working in a research environment other than where their doctoral degree has been completed). The applicant should indicate mobility already completed or planned to be completed during the UEF post doctoral period in their application.
The postdoctoral researcher positions will be filled for a three-year term beginning on 1 January 2018. Post-doctoral researcher positions are always filled for a fixed term (UEF University Regulations, Section 31). The salary is based on level 5 of the job requirement level chart of the teaching and research staff in the salary system for Finnish universities (€ 2 865.30/month). In addition to the job requirement component, the salary includes a personal performance component, which may be a maximum of 46.3 % of the job requirement component.
A person can be appointed to a UEF postdoctoral position supported by UEF strategic funding only once.
The application should include:
– A curriculum vitae (e.g. according to: http://www.tenk.fi/en/content/template-researchers-curriculum-vitae)

– Possible documents related to research mobility during the UEF post doctoral period
Curriculum vitae, list of publications and research proposal are recommended to be submitted in English.
