Senior Research Fellow position in the field of virology, immunology or molecular cell biology for fixed term – University of Turku, Institute of Biomedicine
8.5.2020Senior Research Fellow position in the field of virology, immunology or molecular cell biology for fixed term
University of Turku, Institute of Biomedicine is looking for a postdoctoral fellow (Senior Research Fellow) in the field of virology, immunology or molecular cell biology for a fixed term (1.6.2020 – 31.5. 2023) in the research group lead by Professor Ilkka Julkunen.
The project deals with analysis of the activation of innate immune responses in human primary macrophages and dendritic cells as well as in other established model cell systems in response to virus infection and cloned viral genes. The viral infection models include primarily SARS-CoV-2, but flavi- (Zika, Dengue and TBE viruses) and influenza (seasonal and avian) viruses are also being studied. In addition, cloned virus genes are used in transfection analyses in order to identify the mechanisms how viruses interfere with innate immune system. The project aims at visualizing viral infections, virus – host cell interactions and activation of intracellular signaling pathways by confocal and live cell imaging and interactomics approaches. The work is also related to vaccine research and aims at identifying viral antigenic epitopes and immunity induced by different viral infections (coronaviruses, influenza). Work in the Biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory is expected and previous experience in working with BSL-3 conditions is an advantage.
The candidate is expected to have a strong background in virology, immunology and molecular and cellular biology.
The candidate is also expected to provide laboratory guidance for undergraduate and other students in the laboratory. Institute of Biomedicine has good basic facilities for virological and immunological work and the Institute is in close proximity with the Turku Bioscience Centre, which have excellent microscopical, proteomics, gene expression profiling and versatile molecular biology facilities, which are readily available for the research group. The research group works in a novel Medisiina D building, which has an excellent research environment including BSL-3 laboratories.
The qualification requirements are written in the University of Turku rules of procedure. A person selected for the post of Senior Research Fellow is required to have a doctoral degree and the ability to conduct independent scientific work. For the post of a Senior Research Fellow on the third step of the teaching and research staff career structure, evidence of scientific research work and the necessary teaching skills are also required.
The salary of a Senior Research Fellow position will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research staff in the salary system applied at Finnish universities, according to which the base salary for the position is 2935,55 euros per month. In addition, a performance-based salary component of up to 50% will be paid. There is a trial period of six (6) months.
The position must be applied electronically at the latest on May 20th, 2020. A link to the electronic application system can be found from the following link: www.utu.fi/careers or at the beginning of this announcement (Apply for the job). Academic portfolio (www.utu.fi/en/university/come-work-with-us/academic-portfolio) (if available), CV, list of publications and a copy of diploma of the doctoral degree and list of two possible referees need to be attached to the application
