Job description 

We are seeking a Patent Counsel to help build and manage robust patent portfolios for Orion Corporation’s expanding pipeline in the pharmaceuticals industry. The ideal candidate brings deep knowledge of chemistry or biotechnology and experience in (bio)pharmaceutical R&D. Your key responsibilities 

• Identify and draft patent applications on pharmaceutical inventions in close interaction with inventors 
• Prosecute and defend patents in opposition proceedings in all major jurisdictions. 
• Manage patent portfolios in a time- and cost-efficient manner 
• Conduct freedom-to-operate (FTO) risk assessments and landscape evaluations for both innovative portfolio as well as our generic portfolio development purposes and monitor patent filing activities of competitors 
• Advise R&D and broader in house stakeholders on patenting strategy, FTO and risk mitigation 
• Provide expert patent opinions and evaluations to stakeholders and senior leadership, particularly in the context of external asset evaluations and strategic decision-making 
• Contribute to the further development of the IPR processes in the Company 

You will work closely with R&D and business teams and coordinate with external IP partners to execute our tasks according to the strategy. Your expertise will play an important role in shaping and implementing decisions that support Orion’s innovation pipeline and business goals. The responsibily area of the role will be defined in alignment with your skills and capabilities. 

This is a full-time and permanent position located in Espoo, and we also support hybrid working model. This position reports to Director Intellectual Property Rights.

Our expectations 

• Diploma or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Pharma, or (Molecular) Biology 
• Hands on experience with biopharmaceutical technologies and/or drug discovery and development 
• European Patent Attorney qualification (part/full) is considered as an advantage 
• Several years’ proven experience in pharmaceutical patenting (at least in EU and US), gained in-house or private practice 
• Strong analytical mindset and attention to details. You have proven ability to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple tasks efficiently 
• Highly motivated, collaborative working style with excellent communication skills (English being the main working language) 
• Ability to simplify complex scientific and legal concepts and provide clear, pragmatic advice in a commercial context

to join the Intestinal Signaling and Epigenetics research group led by Associate Professor Keijo Viiri in the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine.

This position is part of the HEALTH-DIMENSIONS (Profi 8) research programme, a national profiling action funded by the Research Council of Finland. The programme focuses on ”Multidimensional Big Data and Life-Course Health,” with a specific emphasis on molecular-level mechanistic validation of diseases.

About the Job

Think of the human body as a complex computer system. Celiac disease is like a software glitch triggered by an external input (dietary gluten) that causes the hardware (the intestine) to malfunction. This research project acts as a system diagnostic—examining the “code” (functional epigenetics) and the “power supply” (metabolism) to identify a “patch” (targeted therapy) that restores the system to its normal state. Above all, this project champions discovery science—uncovering fundamental principles that transcend disease-specific boundaries and generate knowledge with transformative potential across diverse health challenges.

The successful candidate will contribute to an interdisciplinary research environment that bridges clinical data with fundamental molecular biology. The project aims to understand the root causes of intestinal damage and develop personalized treatment strategies for autoimmune conditions.

Key research themes include:

• Precision Immunotherapy: Dissecting molecular pathways driving Celiac Disease (CeD) and its refractory forms to unlock new therapeutic strategies.
• Advanced Disease Modelling: Using omics technologies and patient-derived as well as transgenic murine models to understand why some patients continue to experience symptoms despite standard treatments.
• Metabolism and Cell Health: Exploring how cellular metabolism and epigenetic gene regulation interact to maintain a healthy intestinal lining and how inflammatory responses disrupt this balance.
• Viral Factors: Examining how external triggers, such as viral infections, may predispose individuals to autoimmune responses.

Who Are You?

Työtehtävän kuvaus

Virkasuhde sijoittuu Valvonta ja saatavuus -vastuualueelle Lääkinnälliset laitteet -yksikön Markkinavalvonta -jaostoon. 

Ylitarkastajana pääasiallisia tehtäviäsi ovat lääkinnällisten laitteiden valvonnan erilaiset tehtävät, kuten kotimaisten toimijoiden tarkastukset, markkinavalvontatapauksien käsittely yhdessä muiden asiantuntijoiden kanssa, asiantunteva ja asiakaslähtöinen neuvonta ja ohjaus toimijoille, lausuntojen valmistelu ja erilaiset esitykset sekä osallistuminen lääkinnällisten laitteiden valvonnan kansalliseen ja kansainväliseen yhteistyöhön.

Työhösi kuuluu:
• EU:n ja kansallisen lainsäädännön valvonta (MDR, IVDR, AI act, NIS2….) lääkinnällisten laitteiden sektorilla
• Toimijoiden ohjaus ja neuvonta sääntelyyn liittyvissä kysymyksissä.
• Valvontatehtävät, riskien arviointi ja ilmoitusten käsittely.
• Tiivis yhteistyö sisäisten ja ulkoisten sidosryhmien kanssa, mukaan lukien viranomaiset, valmistajat ja terveydenhuollon toimijat.
• Kansallinen ja kansainvälinen viranomaisyhteistyö, mm. EU-työryhmät.
• Tietojen analysointi ja päätöksenteko asiantuntijaosaamisen pohjalta.

Työ on monipuolista ja vaatii teknistä ja juridista ymmärrystä, yhteistyökykyä ja kykyä hallita laajoja kokonaisuuksia. Keitä me olemme

FVR – Suomen rokotetutkimus on valtion erityistehtäväyhtiö, jonka tausta on Terveyden ja hyvinvoinnin laitokselta ja Tampereen korkeakoulusäätiöltä (Rokotetutkimuskeskus) siirtyneessä vahvassa rokotetutkimusosaamisessa. Yhtiö panostaa korkealaatuisen kliinisen rokotetutkimuksen lisäksi laajoihin rekisteritutkimuksiin (Real World Evidence, RWE) ja pragmaattisiin vaikuttavuustutkimuksiin.

Millainen työ sinua odottaa

Erityistehtäväyhtiössämme toimii kehittämishaluisia ja kannustavia kollegoita haasteellisissa tutkimusprojekteissa. RWE-liiketoimintayksikössä teemme sekä havainnoivia rekisteritutkimuksia että kokeellisia pragmaattisia rokotetutkimuksia, joissa hyödynnämme suomalaisia terveysrekistereitä innovatiivisesti. Toimitilamme sijaitsevat Tampereella, mutta teemme myös joustavasti etätyötä sopimuksen mukaisesti.

Johtava tutkija toimii RWE-tutkimuksissa vaativassa asiantuntijaroolissa. Työhön kuuluu tutkimusten tieteellinen johtaminen, sopimusprosessiin osallistuminen sekä vastuu tutkimussuunnitelman, tutkimuslupahakemusten, tiedonkeruun, analyysin, raportoinnin ja tieteellisen julkaisutyön edistymisestä.

Työ on vaihtelevaa projektityötä, jossa samanaikaisesti edistetään useita eri vaiheessa olevia tutkimuksia. RWE-yksikössä toimit yhteistyössä tutkimus- ja lääketieteellisen johtajan, projektipäällikön, tilastotieteilijän ja eri alojen asiantuntijoiden kanssa.

Tehtävässä on mahdollista tehdä valtakunnallista ja kansainvälistä yhteistyötä erilaisissa merkittävissä, terveysturvallisuutta edistävissä tutkimusprojekteissa. Tarjoamme perehdytyksen tutkimusmaailmaan ja työhön sekä tuemme osaamisesi kehittymistä. Panostamme tietoturvaan ja tietosuojaan.

The Hemato-oncology Research Group (HemoRES) at Faculty of Medicine and Health Technologyis looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow specializing in translational leukemia research. The position is full-time and will be filled for a fixed-term period until the end of 2028.

The Hemato-oncology research group studies the molecular mechanisms underlying childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), aiming to develop novel, mechanism-based targeted therapies. Our approach combines a variety of genomic and molecular analyses, drug screening, patient samples, and disease modeling using both cellular and animal systems, including zebrafish.

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology (MET) is committed to high quality research and education in the fields of biomedical engineering, biotechnology, medicine, and health technology. Job description

We are looking for a talented and motivated postdoctoral researcher to join a project led by Prof. Olli Lohi. The project, funded by the Cancer Foundation Finland, focuses on developing targeted therapies for T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). Our research aims to identify novel and effective combination treatments for T-ALL, enhance immunotherapies, and investigate the mechanisms of drug resistance. The work involves the use of cell lines, patient samples, zebrafish models, and a variety of cellular, molecular, and genome-wide assays.

Requirements

We are seeking a versatile and independent researcher with experience and a proven track record-such as published work or a thesis-in a wide range of cellular and molecular biology techniques, including cell culture, drug testing, CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing, and data analysis (e.g., NGS data, R software). Prior experience with leukemia research or zebrafish experimentation would be appreciated.

• Applicable doctoral degree in the field, e.g. Molecular and Cellular Biology, Immunology, Cancer Biology, or Genomics
• High motivation and a strong research orientation
• The ability to work independently, and stay current with relevant literature

This fixed position from 1.8.2026 (or as agreed) – 31.5.2030 is based in the Department of Molecular and Integrative Biosciences, which is one of the three Departments in the Faculty and located on the Viikki Campus.

Tasks

Teaching and teaching-related tasks account for the majority (70-90%)of the annual working time.  The primary focus will be on contributing to the curriculum of the Master’s Programme in Neuroscience —an international, multilingual programme that attracts both national and international students. In addition, the selected candidate will be involved in bachelor level teaching and teaching-related tasks.

Teaching responsibilities will include fundamental topics in neurobiology from molecular and cellular to systems level, as well as quantitative analysis methods and examples of modern approaches in fundamental research. The university teacher selected for the position will be the responsible teacher on selected courses, teach on courses coordinated by other teachers and to assist professors and university lecturers with course preparation and management. Key duties also include student guidance, bachelor’s and master’s thesis supervision and evaluation as well as participation in collaboration with the faculty’s degree programmes. The candidate is encouraged to integrate into Department’s research activities.

We expect the candidate to be able to work collaboratively, contributing to joint teaching initiatives and to foster a learning environment that encourages critical thinking, creativity, and problem solving.

Selection criteria

According to the University of Helsinki’s administrative regulations, applicants must have a relevant higher education degree and teaching experience. When assessing applicants’ qualifications, emphasis will be placed on proficiency and teaching experience in molecular and integrative biosciences, in particular that  of relevance for the curriculum of the Master’s Programme in Neuroscience,  demonstrated pedagogical competence, supervision of bachelor and master’s theses, and ability to advance the use of interactive and student-centered education methods. Expertise in blended learning approaches that incorporate modern digital tools are regarded as an asset.

The successful candidate should have good knowledge of cutting-edge approaches for investigating neurobiological systems at different levels of organization and to be committed to excellence in research-based undergraduate education.

Additional merits include a doctoral degree and other research experience, particularly in the field of neurobiology. 

Teaching skills

The overall teaching skills of a university teacher must be at least at a good level. Applicants’ teaching skills will be assessed in relation to the curriculum of the Master’s Programme in Neuroscience in the field of neurobiology. Applicants’ teaching skills will be assessed using the faculty’s assessment matrix and a teaching demonstration.

Language skills

The university requires that those holding teaching and research positions must be proficient in the language of instruction, which in this case is English. There is no requirement to be proficient in Finnish for foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish. However, the ability to understand written Finnish and/or Swedish is considered an advantage.

Salary

The salary for this position is based on levels 4–5 of the university salary system’s teaching and research staff requirement level chart. In addition, a salary component based on personal performance is paid. The total salary is 3400-4200 eur/mo.

Tehtävät

About the project and group 

The Nanoscale Architecture Lipid Flux – Veijo Salo research group aims to uncover the molecular logic of lipid flux and organelle biogenesis in metabolic health and disease. We use state-of-the-art approaches in cell biology, imaging, and in-cell structural biology to reveal nanoscale membrane architectures that drive lipid flux in their native context. The group operates across two interconnected sites: the University of Helsinki and Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. For more information, please visit our website. 

This project will focus on structural and biochemical approaches to understand membrane-associated protein assemblies involved in lipid homeostasis. Depending on the candidate’s expertise and interest, the work may include protein and organelle purification, biochemical reconstitution, and single-particle cryo-EM analysis of membrane protein complexes, as well as structural–functional assays in human cells. The exact project will be developed together with the selected researcher. The role will be integrated with complementary cellular approaches in the group and will contribute core mechanistic insight to our broader research program. 

The group is newly established, and the selected candidate will play an important role in building a collaborative, supportive, and scientifically rigorous research environment within the group.  

About you 

• You have a strong background in structural biology, particularly cryo-EM or membrane protein biochemistry. 
• Further degree requirement for postdoctoral position: The degree requirement must be met by the beginning of the employment. 
• You are motivated to use structural and biochemical approaches to understand the mechanisms of membrane-associated protein complexes and are interested in how these structures relate to cellular function.

• Candidates must meet all eligibility criteria as outlined in the individual research project descriptions.
• Candidates must meet the entry requirements of the institution to which they apply.

Application Requirements

The candidates will be selected based on the quality of the application, expertise, work experience, and qualifications. In the first instance, an expression of interest should be lodged containing the following documents (in English) consolidated into one single PDF file. As mentioned above, it will increase your chances if you apply to more than one project.

• A current cv (max 2 pages).
• A short cover letter, no more than 600 words that covers the following: 
  1: your motivation and key research experience/achievements that demonstrate independent thinking and your ability to complete a PhD.  Evidence the skills you claim with the documents you give us. 
  2. the original working title of your MSc or BSc thesis. 
  3. The first scientific memory that you have (max 250 words)
• A clear statement if and how and what AI tools you used. We recommend you do not use them.
• The table of contents of your thesis
• A research outline (max 500 words) related to the DC topic in which you suggest how you meet and can develop further the research project described in the project advertisement. Be specific: where in your attached certificates can we find proof of the necessary qualifications for the given position?

The following items are also needed, but not as part of the single PDF.

• If, as we suggest, you are applying for up to 3 PhD positions in StraDiVarious list your choices in order of preference. (You do not need to provide further information.)
• Details of 2 referees (names, contact details) who can provide additional information about your qualifications.
• Official Academic Record – Bachelor’s and Master’s Certificates and Transcripts
• We expect that, if a Master’s Degree is required, you will either have completed it at the time of application, or will do so with the requisite grades and be able to provide a degree certificate by July 1^st ,2026. In such a case, acceptance is conditional.
• Demonstration of English-language proficiency (official certificates from language tests, or based on your schooling and where you grew up).
• Any other requirements as outlined in the individual research project description.

If we suspect unreported use of AI-generated text, we reserve the right to check using AI-text detection tools and summarily reject the application. This is consistent with our no-tolerance policy towards plagiarism.
