Summer
School on Modern Methods in Biostatistics and Epidemiology, with
teachers from Harvard University, Karolinska Institutet, and other
European
universities, will take place in Italy from May 31st to June 13, 2020.
Registration is now open and the deadline for early registration is 8th
of March 2020.
The
School aims to provide introductory and advanced courses in medical
statistics and epidemiology, and their application to clinical and
etiology
research and public health.

Course description:
This course will present state-of-the-art methods
and science in cancer research. The course consists of two days of
seminars, a poster session, and a demo day for live-cell imaging and
analysis with the IncuCyte S3 cell imager. The goal
of this course is to gain a wide overview of current methods in cancer
research introduced by top-level cancer researchers nationally and
internationally. The demo day will introduce students to IncuCyte S3 and
its novel applications.
The course includes a range of aspects from
molecular, cellular and tissue level research to whole organism disease
modelling. The latest techniques, analysis methods and bioinformatics
related to cellular, tissue, high throughput, sequencing
and imaging technologies are introduced. The methods are presented in
the contexts of real-life research questions and project. While geared
towards cancer, the techniques introduced in this course are applicable
to other research fields as well.
Lectures are open to all students, postdocs and
personnel. Maximum participant amount to the lectures is 150. For demos
maximum participant amount is 40.

Seminaari järjestetään teemalla Tiede murroksessa – Biotieteiden haasteet ennen ja nyt, ja luvassa on upeita esityksiä usealta biotieteiden asiantuntijalta! Seminaari alkaa klo 14, minkä jälkeen jatkamme heti juhlintaa cocktailtilaisuudella klo 18 alkaen. KCT is welcoming Johanna Nystedt to talk about The Finnish Red Cross Blood Service: Cell therapies at all levels.
The seminar is taking place at meeting room Mega, Microkatu 1, Technopolis on 21st November at 10-11am.

ABSTRACT
The Finnish Red Cross Blood Service (FRCBS), a not-for-profit organization, is the nationwide blood service provider in Finland and our main task is to provide the Finnish hospitals with various blood cell products for treating patients. The FRCBS is also active in the cell therapy field and hosts the Advanced Cell Therapy Centre with its GMP facilities for the development and manufacturing of novel cell therapy products. The presentation will shed light on past and on-going cell therapy programs with specific focus on mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) from basic biology, immunomodulatory mechanisms, GMP manufacturing and clinical use.

Järjestimme seminaarin teemalla Rohkeat biologit – Intohimo ja innovatiivisuus suunnannäyttäjinä. Puhujina seminaarissa olivat Virpi Muhonen (Askel Healthcare Oy), Leona Gilbert (Te?ted Oy), Leena Valmu (dosentti, lasten- ja nuortenkirjailija) ja Matti Jalasvuori (akatemiatutkija). Mika Nurmikolu Evogenom Oy:sta joutui perumaan osallistumisensa, mutta saimme kuitenkin Suomen Akatemian akatemiapalkinnon saaneen Matin mukaan seminaariimme! Puheet olivat äärimmäisen inspiroivia ja opiskelijat olivat selvästi kiinnostuneita erilaisista uratarinoista. Keskustelu jatkui rennosti viinin ja snacksien merkeissä 😊
