Åbo Akademi University invites applications for a fixed term position as a PhD Student in Cell Biology starting 1.4.2019 within SPACE-Project (42 months) and within BACE-Project (48 months)

27.2.2019 | Avoimet työpaikat

Research group

The Cell Fate lab led by Professor Cecilia Sahlgren is focused on the
fundamental molecular mechanisms that guide cell fate and cell
organization in stem cell differentiation, tissue formation and in
disease such as cancer. Together with collaborators we utilize such
knowledge to develop material-based medical technologies to control
these mechanisms in regenerative and cancer therapies. Coordination of
cells through molecular cell signaling pathways is crucial for the
formation of functional tissues and signaling is often deregulated in
diseases such as cancer, allowing cells to acquire abnormal functions
and pathological remodeling of tissue architecture. The physical,
mechanical and chemical stimuli of the microenvironment also influence
cell signaling and cell fate decisions during development and disease
progression.

Project description

We are seeking 2 ambitious PhD candidates to join our projects on
Spatiotemporal activation of cell functions (SPACE) 1.4.2019-31.8.2022
or Bioelectronic activation of cell functions (BACE)
1.4.2019-28.2.2023. These projects form an interdisciplinary approach
bringing together researchers within experimental physics and
molecular biology, in order to activate Notch signalling on demand.
The Notch signalling pathway is a seemingly simple signalling system
where the interaction between a ligand at the surface of one cell and
a receptor at the surface of another gives rise to one active
signalling fragment, which regulates target gene expression. Notch is
involved in cell fate specification during development, usually by
facilitating binary cell fate decisions or by maintaining stem cell
fate. Perturbation of the signalling cascade is a contributing factor
in the development of various diseases. Strictly organised, both
spatial and temporal, expression of different receptors and ligands is
essential for proper development of different organs, with each
consecutive activation of Notch driving a specific morphogenic
process. The possibility of controlling Notch receptor activation by
regulating ligand dose and the specific timing of activation will
enable us to better understand different developmental patterns.

Open position for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant at University of Dundee (Cellular Medicine)

12.2.2019 | Avoimet työpaikat

Duration of Employment: up to 36 months

We are recruiting for an exceptional individual to join us as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant within our team, to study immunometabolic actions of metformin. The post holder will work on a British Heart Foundation (BHF) funded project that aims to study ‘immunometabolic’ remodelling of monocyte and macrophage responses by metformin in cardiovascular disease. The work will mainly involve primary cell work, including proteomics, signalling analysis and other approaches to study cellular and molecular biological effects of the drug on immunity.

Our work in this area (Circulation, Circulation Research) has established that anti-inflammatory effects of metformin are exerted irrespective of diabetes status, through mechanisms that are different from existing anti-inflammatory drugs. Control of immunity through changes in metabolism- ‘immunometabolism,’ if it can be better understood, is recognised as a potential site of therapy even in nondiabetic age-related cardiovascular disease (CVD). To work towards this, the purpose of this proposal is to study effects of metformin on monocyte and macrophage biology, to develop a mechanism-based understanding of metformin’s anti-inflammatory actions. Timely insights from the recent CANTOS study, establishing a CVD group receptive to anti-inflammatory therapy, underlines translational potential.

You will be joining a dynamic and growing team working in open-plan lab space alongside other groups, all of us interested in basic science with translational potential. We will offer you experience in supervising students and although the majority of time will be based in Ninewells, Dundee, the post holder will require to have the ability to travel flexibly as this post includes a unique research stay in Finland as part of the group’s interest in internationalisation of diabetes and cardiovascular disease research networks. Previous experience in appropriate research techniques is desirable but training is available.

The University of Dundee enjoys an international reputation for excellence that attracts top-class students and academics from across the world – with over 140 countries represented in the University community. You will be based at Ninewells Hospital and Medical School, one of Europe’s largest teaching hospitals where the School of Medicine provides outstanding opportunities in medical education and training supported by world class research facilities.

Your priorities will include:

  • Manage multiple strands of research work to meet deadlines
  • Prepare progress reports delivering to PIs and collaborators
  • Day-to-day supervision of students within the group
  • Write up results for publication
  • Visit Finland in year 1

Who we’re looking for:

  • Someone with a PhD or equivalent experience
  • Highly motivated to publish, already with a major contribution to at least one published paper
  • Ability/interest in leading a small team (through supervision of students) to achieve research goals
  • An interest in cardiovascular/diabetes research, ultimately to make life better for patients
  • Willingness and ability to visit Finland for collaborative research stay

The calibre of research at Dundee is high, with 95 per cent of staff working in areas of national or international excellence. Dundee benefits from a developed network of inter-disciplinary researchers collaborating across various Schools across our community.

For further information about this position please contact Dr Graham Rena at g.rena@dundee.ac.uk. To find out more about Ninewells Hospital and Medical School please visit https://www.dundee.ac.uk/medicine/.

7.2.2019 | Avoimet työpaikat

The Atherosclerosis Research Laboratory at the Wihuri Research Institute, located in Biomedicum Helsinki in Meilahti, is looking for a highly motivated post-doctoral researcher.

The Atherosclerosis Research Laboratory focuses on identifying novel methods to assess person-to-person differences in various atherogenic properties of lipoproteins, such as interaction of lipoproteins with proteoglycans and lipoprotein modification and aggregation. In a recent hypothesis-generating study we found a link between the presence of aggregation-prone LDL and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) death in a small group of patients having established atherosclerosis (https://academic.oup.com/eurheartj/article/39/27/2562/5049093).

The present research project aims at confirming this link. In addition, we will examine the metabolic factors that control LDL composition and aggregation using mouse models of atherosclerosis, cell culture systems, and in vitro studies. The ultimate goal of our research is to develop novel biomarkers that may facilitate identification of patients who are at increased risk for developing ASCVD.

The Atherosclerosis Research Laboratory led by Adj.Prof. Katariina Öörni is now seeking a post-doctoral researcher to participate in the studies. In particular, we are seeking a researcher with experience in mouse studies. The successful candidate has also experience in cell culture methods and knowledge of lipid and lipoprotein metabolism.

Experience and skills:

·         Ph.D. in biology, biochemistry, medicine or equivalent sciences

·         An excellent research track record

·         Experience in mouse studies

·         Experience in cell culture

·         Knowledge of lipid and lipoprotein metabolism

·         Excellent written and spoken English skills

The position is funded by the Academy of Finland and can be filled immediately. The position is initially funded for 18 months, but can be extended depending on the funding.

Please apply by sending motivation letter and CV in a single PDF file by e-mail to Adj. Prof. Katariina Öörni kati.oorni@wri.fi by February 25th. The position will be filled as soon as a suitable candidate is found.

For further information, please contact Katariina Öörni at the above e-mail.
