The “Vertebrate Evolution, Development and Regeneration” group of Research Director Nicolas Di-Poi at the Institute of Biotechnology investigates a number of questions central to our understanding of craniofacial evolution and development in vertebrates. As an innovative approach, the laboratory takes advantage of squamate reptile models (lizards and snakes) to elucidate the developmental genetic basis of vertebrate craniofacial diversity but also to provide an evolutionary context to developmental disorders. Reptiles represent key emerging model systems in Evo-Devo as they display an exceptional array of life-styles, ecologies, morphologies, and regenerative capacities.
All projects of the research group combine state-of-the-art methods such as cellular biology, molecular embryology, genetics, geometric morphometrics, epigenetics, comparative omics, and theoretical modeling, which offer an interdisciplinary environment for research collaboration and training (see e.g., Science Advances 7:eabj7912(2021), Nature Communication 12:6001 (2021), Nature Communication 10:5560 (2019), eLife 8:e47702 (2019), Nature Communication 9:376 (2018)). The project is a comprehensive study of how resilient or eco-responsive host-microbiome interactions are to changing environments. Both biotic and abiotic factors can influence the bond between hosts and their associated microbes, and create an imbalance that may be linked to decrease in the host fitness and population dynamics in the field. The postdoc will have access to long-term data and yearly field samples to tackle related to microbiota / microbiome community change through space and time. The tasks of the postdoc will include field work, molecular work, and community analyses, and writing of manuscripts; and the details of the project will be adjusted to fit the research interests of both the PI and the postdoc.
For this position experience in analyses of meta-barcoding or metagenomic data is necessary. Experience with phylosymbiosis studies is not required but will be valued. Our work in cancer research may be complex, but our goal is simple: enable better outcomes and quality of life for cancer patients.
We are now looking for a bioinformatician with experience in omics data analysis and clinical data integration to work with the iCAN Data Team and the different subprojects of the ICAN Flagship. Our multidisciplinary teams work closely with clinicians at the hospitals, and our aim is to integrate the collected clinical and omics data, from e.g. high-throughput drug testing, bulk and single-cell DNA/RNA sequencing, microscopic imaging, metabolomics and pharmacogenomics, into an analysis platform to enable cutting-edge cancer research and robust translation back to the clinics for the patient’s benefit.
Specifically, we aim to develop an “integrative Molecular Tumor Board” (iMTB) reporting system to i) identify for each patient the really clinically relevant and actionable results and ii) present these in a concise and well-structured report to both researchers and clinicians. Helsingin yliopiston Kognitiivisen aivotutkimuksen yksikössä Medicumissa on käynnistymässä tutkimushanke, joka on osa Petri Toiviaisen johtaman Suomen Akatemian Musiikin, mielen, kehon ja aivojen huippuyksikön toimintaa. Professori Teija Kujalan johtaman hankkeen pohjana on vuonna 2014 käynnistynyt seurantatutkimushanke Lukivauva (Lukivaikeuden hermostolliset merkit, biomarkkerit ja kuntoutuvuus; johtaja Teija Kujala ja varajohtaja dos. Paula Virtala). Hankkeessa on selvitetty syntymästä lähtien aivotutkimus- (EEG:n kuuloherätevasteet) ja neuropsykologisten menetelmien avulla kuulo- ja kielellisten kykyjen kehitystä lapsilla, joista osalla on perinnöllisen lukivaikeuden ja kielellisten ongelmien riski. Lisäksi on tutkittu vauvaiän musiikki-intervention ja kodin musiikkitoimintojen yhteyksiä kuulo- ja kielellisten kykyjen sekä lukutaitojen kehitykseen.
Nyt käynnistyvässä uudessa hankkeessa toteutetaan näiden sekä hankkeeseen erikseen rekrytoitavien yhteensä noin 400 kouluikäisen (7–10 v.) lapsen laajamittainen tutkimus vuosina 2023–2025. Keskeiset tutkimusmenetelmät ovat EEG:n kuuloherätevasteet, magneettikuvaus (f/MRI) sekä behavioraaliset ja neuropsykologiset testit ja DNA-näytteenotto. Hankkeessa analysoidaan ja julkaistaan samalla jo kertynyttä laajaa aineistoa 0–5 vuoden ikäisiltä lapsilta. Hankkeen tavoitteena on selvittää luki- ja kielihäiriöiden neuropsykologista, hermostollista ja geneettistä perustaa, häiriöiden puhkeamiseen vaikuttavia suojaavia ja riskitekijöitä sekä mahdollisuuksia ennustaa ja ennaltaehkäistä luki- ja kielihäiriöitä.
Tohtorikoulutettavan pääasiallisina työtehtävinä ovat vastaaminen hankkeen aineistonkeruusta ja analyysista sekä tulosten julkaisemisesta yhteistyössä prof. Teija Kujalan ja pian tohtoriksi valmistuvan Peixin Nien kanssa. Keskeisessä roolissa on vuorovaikutus tutkimukseen osallistuiven perheiden, tiimin ja yhteistyökumppaneiden kanssa sekä maisteriopiskelijoiden ja tutkimusavustajien rekrytointi ja ohjaus. Työ tarjoaa resurssit toteuttaa laajamittaista ja menetelmällisesti kunnianhimoista tutkimusta sekä mahdollisuuden analysoida ja julkaista aineistoja kokeneessa tutkimusryhmässä ja Suomen Akatemian huippuyksikön tutkijayhteisössä. Hakijalta edellytetään soveltuvaa aivotutkimusalan tutkintoa esim. psykologian, kognitiotieteen tai neurotieteiden alalta (myös maisteriopintojen viimeistelyvaiheessa olevat hakijat huomioidaan). Työ edellyttää kokeellisen tutkimuksen, tieteellisen kirjoittamisen ja opiskelijoiden ohjaamisen taitoja.
Työ laajamittaisessa seurantahankkeessa edellyttää erinomaisia organisointikykyjä ja vuorovaikutustaitoja. Tutkittavan ryhmän (kouluikäiset lapset) ja tehtävässä keskeisen verkostotyön (yhteydenpito perheisiin, kouluihin ym.) vuoksi hakijalta edellytetään sujuvaa suomen kielen taitoa. Hakijalla on hyvä olla kokemusta vähintään joistakin hankkeen keskeisistä menetelmistä (EEG, f/MRI, neuropsykologiset tutkimukset). Eduksi katsotaan kokemus EEG-menetelmästä (erit. kuuloherätevasteista) sekä lasten tutkimuksesta. Tehtävä on määräaikainen, ja sen puitteissa on tarkoitus käynnistää tohtorin tutkintoon tähtäävä tutkimus. Se alkaa maalis-toukokuussa 2023 aikana tehtävään valitun henkilön tilanteen mukaisesti ja kestää vuoden ajan. Perehtyminen työhön alkaa heti sopivan henkilön löydyttyä. Tehtävässä on kuuden kuukauden koeaika. Palkkaus perustuu yliopistojen palkkajärjestelmän vaativuustasoon OV02 ja asettuu välille 2300 – 2600 EUR/kk.

Laboratoriotyön osaajana toimit tutkimusryhmän/-ryhmien kanssa ja olet mukana tutkimustyön tekemisessä. Keskeisimmät tehtäväsi ovat

erilaisten tutkimuskohtaisten biokemiallisten ja molekyylibiologisten kokeiden ja mittausten suorittaminen,

Tehtävä täytetään 1.5.2023 alkaen (tai sopimuksen mukaan) toistaiseksi. Uuden työntekijän tullessa tehtävään käytetään koeaikaa.
Tehtävän palkkaus määräytyy yliopistojen muun henkilöstön palkkausjärjestelmän vaativuustasolle 6 – 8 (2 171,31 – 2 640,49 €/kk). Tehtäväkohtaisen palkanosan lisäksi maksetaan henkilökohtaiseen suoriutumiseen perustuvaa palkanosaa, joka on 6 – 50 % tehtäväkohtaisesta palkanosasta. Vaativuustasosta ja henkilökohtaisesta palkanosasta riippuen palkka työsuhteen alkaessa on noin 2 500 – 3 350 €/kk.

Role and salary
We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join the A.I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences at the Faculty of Health Sciences in Kuopio, Finland. In this role, you will have the opportunity to conduct technical research in the field of neuroscience, specifically by developing and applying computational neuroimaging (MRI) analysis methods to projects primarily focusing on neurodegenerative diseases. The appointee will work closely with Academy Research Fellow Dogu Baran Aydogan and Prof. Jussi Tohka.
Specific responsibilities include:
Developing computational methods for connectivity and microstructure analysis with the aim of achieving technical objectives, such as predicting disease progression or developing biomarkers
Developing image processing and data analysis pipelines, especially for diffusion MRI and tractography, to study large datasets such as ADNI
Authoring high-quality scientific papers and contributing to the preparation of research projects.
We welcome candidates with an interest in multimodal data (e.g., multimodal imaging, EEG, genetics, behaviour) and a strong desire to take an integrative approach to understanding the brain and its disorders.
The research is expected to contribute to collaboration with scientists from different research groups in UEF’s Neuroscience Research Community (NeuroRC, see https://www.uef.fi/en/research-community/neuroscience-neuro). The international UEFRAE2019 evaluation panel assessed NeuroRC to be of outstanding quality in an international comparison (score 6/6). The research of the A.I. The A. I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences is a research institute housing an international staff of 150 full-time scientists. It is part of the Faculty of Health Sciences and focuses on biomedical research on neurological and cardiovascular diseases (see https://www.uef.fi/en/unit/ai-virtanen-institute-for-molecular-sciences).
The position will be filled from 1 April 2023 (or as agreed) until 31 August 2026. The position is fixed-term due to it pertaining to a specific project. A probationary period is applied to all new members of the staff.
The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the Finnish universities’ salary system. The salary comprises two components: a job requirement component and a personal performance component. Depending on the candidate, the job requirement component will be determined based either on level 5 or level 6 of the scheme for teaching and research staff. In this position, the job requirement component is €3044.00 per month on level 5 and €3549.72 per month on level 6. The personal performance component can be a minimum of 6% and a maximum of 50% of the above-mentioned sums. The estimated salary at the beginning of the employment will be in the range of €3348 – 3866 per month on level 5, and €3905 – 4508 per month on level 6.

Hands-on experience in data analysis and method development (machine learning, complex networks, image/signal analysis) for neuroscientific applications

Experience in managing research projects and teams, practical experience from top-level international research institutes, and previous experience in neuroscience are considered to be assets
Previous experience in the supervision of PhD and MSc students and a successful track record of acquiring external funding are beneficial but not mandatory.

The Vascular Biology Group led by Dr. Johanna Laakkonen is recruiting an ethusiastic and highly motivated PhD candidate or postdoctoral researcher to study angiocrine signalling in vessel remodeling and therapeutic targeting of cardiovascular diseases.We utilize state-of-the art cell biological, tissue imaging and omics methods to study disease mechanisms. Our group is part of the Academy of Finland’s Flagship Programme GeneCellNano that develops therapeutics for cardiovascular diseases. Based on our findings in clinical samples, we develop novel therapeutics in 3D in vitro modelsand in vivo models.

MSc (PhD position) or PhD (Postdoctoral/Project Researcher position) in biomedicine, biotechnology or molecular medicine, or an equivalent discipline.
Experience with in vivo models, cell culturing, bioinformatics or Python programming is considered an advantage.
High motivation to study disease mechanisms or vascular biology.
Resilient and proactive attitude with good team-working skills.
Good knowledge of written and spoken English.
A person to be appointed to the Postdoctoral Researcher position is required to hold a suitable doctoral degree. If you have been awarded your doctoral degree less than five years ago, the post will be one of a Postdoctoral Researcher. If the doctoral degree has been awarded more than five years ago, the post will be one of a Project Researcher. In this context, five years is the net period of time, which does not include maternity leave, parental leave, military service, etc. The position of postdoctoral researcher shall always be filled for a fixed term (UEF University Regulations, Section 31).
A person appointed to the Doctoral Researcher position shall be qualified to pursue postgraduate studies, i.e., they are required to have completed a suitable higher university degree or an equivalent education abroad that would qualify the person for similar academic studies. Doctoral Researcher (Ph.D. student) in the field of Biomedical Engineering
to join its team to work in a challenging Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) project. This doctoral research is part of the Horizon 2020 MSCA Innovative Training Network Carthago (https://itn-carthago.sites.uu.nl/) focusing on novel gene delivery to treat osteoarthritis and intervertebral disc degeneration.
The Doctoral Researcher position focuses on studies of ultrasound-enhanced delivery of nucleic acids into cell, tissues and joints. Specific focus is on delivery to chondrocytes, articular cartilage and intervertebral disc. This project is highly experimental work and employs non-linear ultrasonic mechanisms, e.g. acoustic streaming and sound-bubble -interactions, to enable actuation and manipulation of matter leading to intended delivery outcome.
Your role We are looking for a Doctoral Researcher to investigate ultrasonic methods for delivery of nucleic acids into tissues and cells in connective tissues such as articular cartilage and intervertebral disc. These investigated state-of-the-art methods are expected to contribute to new regenerative therapies for management of degenerative joint disease such as osteoarthritis. The work is conducted mainly at Aalto University with mobility to other universities of the Carthago consortium.
Your work will include ultrasonic experimentation with cell cultures, tissue samples, building and enhancing experimental arrangements and conducting data analysis (signals, microscopy images). Our research at the Medical Ultrasonics Laboratory (MEDUSA, http://medusa.aalto.fi) in the Department of Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering (NBE), Aalto University, focuses on innovating new ultrasound platforms for biomedical use with a goal to translate these into hospital and research environments. Ultrasound provides unconventional means to manipulate human tissue and matter on microscopic and macroscopic levels. When intended, ultrasonic exposures generating sonic force fields can be applied from a distance, e.g. through the skin. This can permit creation of non-invasive and minimally invasive methods for various medical applications.
Your background and expertise The ideal candidate has the following qualities:
Capability to work independently in laboratory environment and learn new things quickly.
Resilience and readiness to work in ambitious environments and under pressure.
Experience with cell cultures and/or experimenting with mammalian tissue. Willingness and capability to work with human samples.
Excellent study record. Completed suitable studies (experimental, theoretical or both) e.g. biology, medicine, biomedical physics or biomedical engineering, or in other field relevant to the topic. Sufficient studies in mathematics, biology and/or physics are required.
Ability or high potential in running experiments in a diligent, systematic and highly careful manner.
Strong interest in development, testing, and using the ultrasonic methods and when necessary contribute to developing ultrasound setups.
Excellent command of the English language, excellent team working skills and can do -mentality.

What we offer The duration of the employment contract is 1,5 years, with an option of continuation. The duration of the doctoral studies at Aalto University is 4 years. The student is expected to contribute to personal funding application. The salary for a doctoral researcher is approx. 3400 €/month. The candidate must not have lived in Finland for more than 12 months in the past 36 months.
