Job Posting Description:

    • The Research Professional will contribute to projects aimed at understanding the mechanism of action (MOA) of existing and novel drugs for dermal indications.
    • S/he will be required to independently carry out in vitro and in vivo experiments to support specific project and team goals, with strict timelines.

Job Qualifications:

    • A Ph.D. in biology or equivalent, with 2+ years of postdoctoral or industry experience is strongly preferred or a MS in Biology or equivalent with 4 years specific experience is required.
    • The successful candidate would have experience with qPCR gene expression analysis and skin models, including primary skin cells, 3D tissue models, human skin explants and in vivo models.
    • Experience in the field of molecular biology, skin biology and dermatology are required. Experience with ELISA, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and Western blotting is preferred. The successful candidate must work well in a team environment.
    • The successful candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience with presenting results and writing project reports.

Job Description

Purpose
The Autoimmunity, Transplantation and Inflammation (ATI) disease area at Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) is looking for a qualified scientific associate with expertise in rodent disease models and ex vivo/in vitro cell biology to join our Integrated Pharmacology team. Reporting to the Lab Head, you will work in a science-driven environment with both exploratory and operational functions and have the opportunity to contribute to the investigation and understanding of novel pathways in immunology.
Your tasks will include

  • Actively contribute to projects aiming at discovering new ways to modulate the immune system for the treatment of autoimmune diseases
  • Perform mechanistic and disease studies in rodents
  • Implement new in vitro and in vivo lab techniques according to literature, and explore new approaches
  • Culture and characterization of primary rodent cells
  • Establish and use molecular and in vitro cellular methods (e.g. assessment of different activation parameters of leukocytes) to investigate the function of primary human and mouse leukocytes
  • Combinatorial application of a variety of readouts, like multicolor flow cytometry, western blots, ELISA and the assessment of leukocyte differentiation for the characterization of novel immunomodulating substances and pathways
  • Induction of antigen-specific tolerance in rodent models.

Use of cellular and biochemical methods to determine activation of complement pathways in primary cells and organs (blood, urine, tissue) derived from rodents or humans

  • Use of human and rodent material for drug development and target validation
    • Interact in a cross-functional and cross-divisional project team active in drug development
    • Present results at project team meetings and engage in scientific discussions with the team members

    Minimum Requirements

    • MSc, BSc, Diploma or strong apprenticeship in Immunology, Cellular biology, Biochemistry or another relevant scientific discipline
    • Fluency in English (oral and written). German is advantageous
    • Experience with different rodent disease models
    • Experience with experimental autoimmune encephalitis would be a strong bonus
    • Experience in rodent necropsy, tissue sampling
    • Solid knowledge of a variety of in vitro cell biology methods (flow cytometry, RT-PCR, western blot, stimulation of immune cells, complement assays)
    • Documented experience in isolating and handling primary mouse leukocytes
    • Proven practical experience in a relevant research environment; immunology background and knowledge of the complement system and/or antigen-specific tolerance is preferred
    • Theoretical knowledge of immunology and immunological methods
    • Eager to learn and combine new techniques and concepts
    • Demonstrated ability to perform exploratory activities independently and within a highly matrix team environment

Job Description

In this position, your main tasks include order reviewing, sample reception and accessioning. You confirm that samples arriving to our Helsinki laboratory comply with our sample requirements and that the enclosed paperwork is sufficient. You use your knowledge of our products and your background in life sciences to make sure the test choices are optimal for the customer’s needs.

Your work is very detail-oriented and guided by precise guidelines. You need problem-solving skills to apply those guidelines in practice for the diverse patient cases we get. You work closely with Client Services Team to make sure that the customer is aware of any exceptions in the process.

Qualifications

You should have a Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences. Specialization in medical/human genetics is an asset.

A postdoctoral position is available in the newly established laboratory of Adj.prof. Leena Latonen in University of Eastern Finland, School of Medicine, Institute of Biomedicine, Kuopio Campus. Our laboratory studies cancer-associated cellular mechanisms against protein and RNA toxicity.

We are seeking for a motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Academy of Finland funded project studying epithelial functions of androgen receptor-linked RNA binding proteins. We are interested in understanding the roles in cellular stress responses of macromolecules aberrated in prostate cancer. We use modern cell and molecular biology techniques ranging from imaging to next generation sequencing. In this project, we focus on interactions between protein and RNA molecules as well as intracellular traffic of macromolecular complexes.

A person to be appointed as a postdoctoral researcher shall hold a suitable doctoral degree (e.g. molecular or cell biology, or alike), a publication record of high quality, fluent written and spoken English, and ability to work both independently as well as a part of a group. Previous experience in RNA biology, mammalian cell culture and/or cellular imaging will be an asset.

Subject field and description of the position

The research field for the position will be medical microbiology and immunology. The duration of the position is 5 years. The starting date is January 1, 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter. A six-month trial period will be effective in the beginning of the 5-year contract.

The successful applicant must hold a PhD degree in biomedicine, or related discipline, and research on biomedicine and/or medical/health technology after PhD.

Demonstrated experience in writing scientific publications, supervision experience, activity in the scientific community, potential in acquiring supplementary funding and teaching experience will be taken as merits.

Our newly established research group has open positions for doctoral candidates who are motivated to investigate key open questions in the field of:
 
– Architecture/patterns of biological networks
– Vascular biology
– Adaptive immunology
– Heterogenous cell-cell interactions
 
We use state-of-the-art imaging methods and collaborate world leading experts to 1. characterize the architecture of the lymphatic capillary networks and the causative molecular mechanisms and 2. identify the lymphatic endothelial determinants of antigen presenting dendritic cell transmigration across the lymphatic capillary endothelium. Experience in cell culture, mouse models and/or image analyses are beneficial but not required.
 
The work is supervised by principal investigator doc. Kari Vaahtomeri.
