The Department of Biological and Environmental Science is currently seeking to recruit candidates to the positions of

Qualifications we are looking for
The Doctoral Programme in Biological and Environmental Science offers doctoral education in Aquatic Science, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Cell and Molecular Biology and Environmental Science. Doctoral Students work in the department’s research groups. You are the person we are looking for if you have a Master’s degree, or be about to obtain a Master’s degree, in a relevant discipline and have a strong interest in the offered research projects.
The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of a doctoral student are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. The Master’s degree must have been completed before starting the studies. A good command of English is required. Doctoral Student needs to be also enrolled in the doctoral programme which can be applied from the Faculty of Mathematics and Science after selection for the position.

The position and our expectations
The open postdoctoral position is going to start off a new endeavour in which we attempt to repurpose copper-centred monooxygenases as catalysts for new-to-nature reactions. The SweetCopper project aims at developing non-natural catalytic transformations based on fungal metalloproteins, the investigation of underlying mechanisms, and the engineering of the proteins to improve stereoselectivity and broaden the reaction/substrate scope. Key qualifications: experience in heterologous expression of fungal enzymes, protein engineering, directed evolution.

Our research is carried out in modern facilities with a state-of-the-art infrastructure. We are looking for three research scientists in cell and molecular biology to research and R&D projects focusing on genetic modification of T cells and NK cells with CARs.
The Finnish Red Cross Blood Service has a strategic interest in the development of novel cell therapeutics. Presently, mesenchymal stromal cells are being manufactured at the Advanced Cell Therapy Centre for treatment of patients, and we are also participating in an industry-led R&D project aiming at developing a Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR)-equipped T-cell product for patient treatment.
The projects
One research project is funded as part of the Academy of Finland Flagship program GeneCellNano (2020-2024). The person hired for this post will be employed by the University of Eastern Finland, but they will be supervised by and carry out their work at the Finnish Red Cross Blood Service in Helsinki.
Another project is a collaborative project between the University of Helsinki and the Blood Service and funded by the Finnish Cancer Foundation (funding secured for 2021-22 and further funding will be sought), and the scientist will be similarly supervised at and carry out their work at the Blood Service.
The third project is financed by the pharmaceutical industry and aims at developing new CAR T-cell therapeutics, aiming for clinical translation.
For these projects, two post-doctoral and one post-graduate researcher aiming at a PhD degree are sought. One of the post-doctoral scientists will to devote a part (10-20%) of his/her time to laboratory management.
We hope you could start your work in January-April of 2021.
The projects are conducted in collaboration with research groups from the University of Helsinki and University of Eastern Finland. Your work involves planning the research, carrying out experiments as well as interpreting and reporting the results. You will operate within a research group focusing on developing novel immune cell technologies.
Skills and experience
You have a suitable university degree and strong experience of cell culture. Experience in immunology and molecular biology will be helpful. The projects will employ animal tumor models but prior experience is not mandatory. The work requires self-driven and motivated scientists with previous experience in research. Collaboration and communication skills are also important. Describe in your application the experimental techniques in cell culture, immunology and molecular biology that you master, and the extent of your experience in these techniques, your motivation for academic research and lab-work, as well as possible references.

Responsibilities
You will be responsible for producing and characterizing recombinant proteins which represent disease targets for drug discovery projects in the early discovery. These proteins are utilized in the development of biochemical assays for compound screening, structural & biophysical assays to characterize protein ligand interactions and to develop oligonucleotide drugs. Qualifications
Essential Requirements
- MSc degree with significant experience from pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry or PhD in Biology, Pharmacology, Biochemistry or other a related discipline
- Expertise in Protein Science through a demonstrable knowledge of construct design, molecular biology, protein expression, purification, characterization and structure function
- Proven knowledge of a wide range of methods and technologies applied to the expression, purification as well as characterization of recombinant proteins. E.g. bacterial expression, liquid chromatography, SDS-PAGE, mass spectrometry and biophysical techniques
- Excellent analytical skills, good scientific judgement and communication skills
- Excellent team working and networking skills with experience of interacting effectively in multi-disciplinary and cultural settings
Desirable Requirements
- Experience of biochemical assay development
- Experience of setting up multi-parallel processes for protein purification

Your Role and Goals
You would be working for the technical service for education and research at the School of Arts, Design and Architecture, responsible for the specialized hands-on-learning environments of the school. The service is organized in thematic teams. As a member of the Manufacturing team you are responsible for the Biofilia as a hands-on-learning environment. Biofilia – Base for Biological Arts provides the basic tools of molecular biology, tissue culture and engineering as well as microbiology for users from various backgrounds and interests. Your role as a Laboratory Master includes the following main tasks and responsibilities when ensuring functioning of the workshop and safe working environment as a learning and research environment for the students and researchers.
Maintenance and development
- Maintaining and developing the space and equipment as well as communication of the laboratory environment.
- Managing of the material and equipment purchasing as well as the storing processes.
- Responsible for material purchasing for the courses and research projects as well as assisting teachers with any course related activities or technical details.
- Annual planning and budgeting of the operations.
- Planning of new investments and carrying out procurement.
- Recycling and waste management, also consulting the ARTS Infra in all chemical related issues.
Guiding, instructing and supporting users
- Helping and guiding the students to organize, schedule and define technical details of their experiments and research settings with quality emphasized customer service mind-set.
- Teaching the introduction course (1 cr) of Biofilia four times a year and independently develop this course content further.
Managing health and safety
- Ensuring safe and healthy working conditions for students and other users of the workshop.
- Guiding users of the workshop into safe working practices.
- Active advisory on the use of protective gear.
Collaboration
- Collaborating with teaching and research personnel of other Schools of Aalto University and other Universities.
- Collaborating with Aalto University Junior that is sharing spaces and equipment with Biofilia.

Your experience and ambitions
Success in this position requires a master ́s degree in biology, biochemistry, chemistry (University or University of Applied Sciences degree) or equivalent. You have worked in a laboratory for at least one year and you have background in microbiology and cell culture work. Experience in these is prerequisite as well as being familiar with DNA working methods. You are able to work fluently with both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell lines. Applicant must have experience in teaching and/or working in a research laboratory with students. Pedagogical skills are considered as an asset. You have interest towards the field of arts and to multidisciplinary collaboration. Knowledge of the field of bioart is considered as a benefit. A major duty of the Laboratory Master is to advise, guide and instruct students and faculty in the use of the laboratory. Job description
We’re looking for an experienced biological engineer with a background in metabolic and/or protein engineering to lead our efforts to produce natural and novel molecules with therapeutic function. In this role you will use a range of bioinformatics and ”omics” tools to identify and test promising enzyme candidates leading to the production of target high-value molecules, use a range of protein modelling and mutagenesis techniques to generate improved enzyme variants with e.g. increased activity, substrate range, stability etc, and finally engineer yeast cell-factories to produce target molecules by fermentation.
Our ideal candidate will be able to handle as many of the following scientific areas as possible:
– Gene hunting: A proven track record elucidating biosynthetic pathways to high-value molecules.
– Protein engineering: An ability to analyse gene/protein sequences and identify hot spots for mutagenesis and generate and screen for variants with improved function.
– Metabolic engineering (particularly in yeast): Proven track record of engineering microbial cell factories to produce target molecules de novo . As well as identify production bottlenecks and design and implement genetic strategies to overcome them.

The role expands to leading technology research and feasibility studies with internal and external customers, commercialized product sustaining and support activities. The jobholder works closely and is expected to influence R&D peers in the UK, Finland and the US, and similarly with colleagues in Operations, Marketing and Sales.
- Leading the translation of customer needs defined by Product Management into product specification criteria and experimental activities.
- Creating high level project and technical work plans with timelines and resources and communicating them to the R&D Manager and project team.
- Leading and managing practical activities and ensuring successful implementation of the work plan.
- Utilizing expertise to ensure molecular food protection solutions are accurate, innovative and easy to use.
- Assessing the capabilities of the project team and working with the R&D Manager to ensure adequate support is in place to execute practical activities according to plan.
- Identifying associated technical risks, implementing mitigation strategies and communicating them effectively to stakeholders.
- Leading transfer to production activities for new products and sustaining and supporting for existing products.
How will you get here?
- Master’s degree or higher in biosciences or biotechnology or related field (e.g. microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, engineering discipline)
- Several years of experience in diagnostic method development is essential
- Foundational knowledge, experience and advanced competency in molecular and microbiological techniques and methods
- Experience in protein purification and characterization processes, DNA polymerase in particular
- Experience in working under Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) or in compliance with other medical or pharmaceutical quality standard
- Skills in summarizing and communicating relevant data to technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Proficient in constructing formal and informal technical reports, adjusting content to an appropriate level of detail dependent on the audience
- In depth and thorough understanding of validation requirements for alternative methods in a global food protection setting
- Evidence in the application of advanced statistical analysis of molecular datasets
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Strong teamwork capabilities
- High energy, with perseverance and the ability to work flexible hours (early start or late finish) in a high pace environment
- Fluent written and spoken English, and preferably Finnish

Tehtävässä toimit Terveystalon laboratoriotoiminnan analytiikan vastuuhenkilönä ja asiantuntijana ja teet tiiviisti yhteistyötä laboratoriodiagnostiikan johtajana toimivan kliinisen kemian erikoislääkärin kanssa. Työtehtäviin kuuluu mm. laboratoriokoordinaattoreiden tiimin toiminnan ohjaaminen, laboratoriotoiminnan prosessien kehittäminen, Terveystalon itse suorittamien laboratoriotutkimusten menetelmien valinta, validointi ja laadun valvonta, uuden potilastietojärjestelmän käyttöönotto ja kehittäminen laboratorion osalta sekä laboratorioasiantuntijan tuki Terveystalon toimipisteille.
Tehtävä edellyttää sairaalakemistin tai sairaalamikrobiologin pätevyyttä, tai vaihtoehtoisesti FM tai DI koulutusta kliiniseen laboratoriotoimintaan soveltuvassa koulutusohjelmassa ja vähintään 2 vuoden työkokemusta kliinisessä laboratoriossa (sairaalalaboratorio tai yksityinen kliininen keskuslaboratorio). Kokemus esimiestehtävistä katsotaan eduksesi.
Tehtävän menestyksellinen hoitaminen vaatii vahvaa kliinisen laboratoriotoiminnan substanssiosaamista, hyvää organisointikykyä, valmiuksia laboratorioprosessien kehittämiseen, yhteistyö- ja vuorovaikutustaitoja sekä asiakaslähtöistä työskentelyotetta.

How will you make an impact?
You will work in our Operations organization for microbiology business. Your essential responsibility is to conduct the Quality Control procedures for an instrument and it’s accessories as specified in related manufacturing documentation and specifications. You will also prepare microbiological samples for Quality Control procedures. This is a role with versatile responsibilities and enables you to get familiar with many areas of expertise.
What will you do?
We are looking for a laboratory technician with microbiology background and/or hands-on experience with microbiological samples and ability to learn and adopt new techniques quickly. It is essential, that you are able to work in co-operation and demonstrate flexibility in changing situations. You are able to take action and execute manual process steps in the laboratory. You enjoy working with high technology products and driving multiple initiatives at the same time. You want to develop yourself and way of working.
Key responsibilities:
- Performing instrument Quality Control procedures
- Documenting all procedures and possible deviations diligently
- Culturing microbiological samples for Quality Control purposes (e.g. bacterial cultivations on BSL-2 level laboratory)
- Performing the Quality Control procedures of instrument accessories
- Management of laboratory reagents (ordering and book keeping) and responsibility for the operation and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation
- Following and improving good microbiological working practices
- Monitoring demand to balance the manufacturing volume
- Recording defects and forwarding them further to be resolved
- Participation in the Handling of Nonconformity, Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) and Continuous Improvement processes
How will you get there?
Education
- Laboratory technician/ B.Sc. level degree or similar in biosciences or biotechnology or related field (e.g. microbiology, biochemistry, chemistry)
- Experience
- Three years of work experience in microbiological laboratory environment
- Ability to understand and conduct work according to work instructions
- Understanding of quality systems requirements and the demands of regulated working environment

Radiometer has a diverse and technologically advanced line of Medical Devices that is used for diagnosing a broad group of patients worldwide.
It is your opportunity to lead and execute clinical studies, collaborate with doctors and nurses to identify which sites are most suitable to conduct studies with. Furthermore, you can look forward to being a key contributor internally when you communicate the progress of clinical studies to key stakeholders.
Responsibilities
You can expect to:
• Manage global clinical trials and programs associated with all RMED’s business areas to support global registrations
• Represent the Sponsor in clinical study planning, study design, study execution and study closeout. Examples of deliverables include clinical protocol, monitoring plan, site budgeting, contracting and Trial Master File.
• Lead the Study team and on a daily basis proactively lead study execution within budget along with your Clinical peers.
• Collaborate with other functions (data management, regulatory, quality, R&D, Marketing and Operations, legal) as well as external partners (investigators, subject matter experts, Contract Research Organizations) on clinical study deliverables
• Proactively identify clinical project risks, provide input to appropriate counter-measures and contingency plans and assure implementation of action plans to reduce project risk and meet clinical study timelines
The assignments require you to maintain knowledge about clinical input required by European regulators, ISO, FDA and Good Clinical Practice (GCP). You also get to collaborate cross-functionally with data managers, regulatory, quality, R&D, Marketing and Operations. Collaboration with external partners such as investigators, subject matter experts and Contract Research Organizations on product development process deliverables are also part of the job.
The job requires travelling up to 40% of your time.
Edellytämme sinulta
- Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) or Master of Science (M.S.) in a scientific, biological or medical science discipline is required. This combined with the following increases your chances of success in the job:
- More than 5 years of experience in leading clinical study execution as a Clinical Study Manager
- Knowledge of how to apply clinical development expertise to create excellent clinical protocols and being able to inspire trust and respect among international colleagues
- Experience with successful proactive planning and leading clinical study execution for clinical diagnostics and/or medical devices in a regulated environment
- Demonstrated solid track record of successful results and in leading collaboration in effective teams and getting work done through others
- Demonstrated strong ability to understand complex scientific, engineering and business concepts
- Clinical experience with Blood Gas testing, Transcutaneous Monitoring and Immunoassays testing is an advantage.
- On a personal level you are positive, energetic, structured and organized combined with a having a high level of ethical standards.
