A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Scott Rawls in the Center for Substance Abuse Research (CSAR) and Department of Pharmacology at Temple University (Lewis Katz School of Medicine) in Philadelphia

25.6.2018 | Ajankohtaista
A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Scott Rawls in the Center for Substance Abuse Research (CSAR) and Department of Pharmacology at Temple University (Lewis Katz School of Medicine) in Philadelphia. Our laboratory is studying and developing neuropharmacological profiles of synthetic cathinones (e.g. ‘bath salts’) for comparison with established psychostimulant drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamine. A major emphasis is determining how chemokine and cytokine systems in brain reward substrates are impacted by psychostimulant drug intake and influence psychostimulant reward, reinforcement and relapse. We utilize a combination of behavioral (self-administration, conditioned place preference, ICSS, forced swim, elevated plus maze), neurochemical (in vivomicrodialysis/HPLC) and cellular (gene/protein expression, immunohistochemistry, binding) techniques. We also use contemporary drug discovery approaches through collaborations with medicinal chemists to separate adverse and therapeutic effects of synthetic cathinones.

For this position we are seeking a highly-motivated candidate with experience in studying behavioral and neurochemical effects of drugs of abuse to lead a NIDA-funded project investigating impacts of chemokine/cytokine systems on psychostimulant dependence and relapse.  The successful candidate will join a highly-interactive neuroscience community and will work as part of a team that includes members of other laboratories in CSAR and the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.

A recent Ph.D. degree in either neuroscience or pharmacology is preferred. Submit a curriculum vitae and contact information for 3 references to Scott Rawls, Ph.D., scott.rawls@temple.edu.  Salary will be commensurate with qualifications, laboratory experience, and institutional guidelines.

Two postdoctoral positions in Khodosevich group at BRIC, University of Copenhagen : Copenhagen, Denmark

Two postdoctoral positions in Khodosevich group at BRIC, University of Copenhagen : Copenhagen, Denmark

We are looking for two highly motivated and dynamic researchers, who will join a team of molecular and cellular biologists and computational scientists studying how human neurodevelopmental disorders arise during brain development and maturation

The Research Centre

The Biotech Research and Innovation Centre (BRIC) is a research centre of excellence for biomedical research, focusing on disease-oriented basic research, at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. BRIC hosts 24 independent research groups that perform basic and translational research aimed to understand diseases like cancer, neurological and metabolic disorders.
For further information about the Khodosevich group and BRIChttp://www.bric.ku.dk/

Our research

Our group studies mechanisms that are responsible for neuronal specification, positioning and circuit formation during prenatal and postnatal brain development, and how these mechanisms are impaired in neurodevelopmental disorders such as schizophrenia, epilepsy, autism. We analyse mouse models of neurodevelopmental disorders and human tissue to identify those neurons that are affected in a particular disorder, and how dysfunction of affected neurons contribute to brain circuit malformation and underlie cognitive impairment in human patients. Our work is highly interdisciplinary, from high-throughput analyses of single neurons in human and mouse tissues to functional studies of disease relevant genes in mouse models in vivo or in human cell cultures in vitro. Importantly, we have international network of collaborators for studying human brain disorders by variety of frontline technologies and cooperate with several Hospitals for most efficient transition from basic to translational studies.

Your job

Two postdoctoral positions are available:

1.You will investigate how human neurons are affected in neurodevelopmental disorders by comparative analysis of healthy and disordered brains. You will implement single cell transcriptomics pipelines that are established in the lab with follow-up analyses of disease-causing genes in human cell cultures and in mouse models.
2.You will investigate how neuronal circuits are affected in mouse models of neurodevelopmental disorders. You will study this question by analysing brain anatomy, neuronal morphology and cellular properties of affected neurons.

Profile

We are looking for highly motivated and enthusiastic scientists with the following competences and experience:

Essential:

You have a PhD in Life Sciences, preferably in Neuroscience, Developmental Biology or Brain disorders

  • You are highly experienced in molecular and cellular biology, and previous single cell work is an advantage
  • You are particularly interested in understanding of how neurodevelopmental disorders arise and in finding new targets for translational research
  • You have and excellent track record with several published papers where your contribution was essential
  • You have proficient communication skills and ability to work in teams
  • You have excellent English skills written and spoken

We offer

  • A 2.5 to 4-year contract (possibly extendable) with a competitive salary and social benefits (e.g. social security, health coverage, parental leave)
  • Access to state-of-the art tools and infrastructure
  • Tailored support in raising competitive funds and communicate your research
  • A stimulating and supportive international research environment

We have weekly internal seminars with PhD students and postdocs presenting their work as well as external seminars with international speakers. BRIC also hosts several research clubs; Hematology club, Chromosome Biology club, Stem cell club and Single Cell Transcriptomics seminar series. The Institute has an association for students and postdocs (ASAP), a PhD programme (MoMeD) and a Postdoc Career Programme (PCP). BRIC has extensive international collaborations and actively participates in the European alliance, EU-LIFE consisting of 13 excellent life science research institutions and is part of the EU-funded LIBRA initiative to obtain gender balance in life science research.

BRIC has a highly international profile (over 60% international researchers) and English as working language. An International Staff Mobility Office at UCPH supports and guides international researchers through your initial steps in Denmark (e.g. residence and work permits, tax and pension, banking, medical care, childcare). They also offer a dual career network open for spouses of our researchers.

Start date: preferably September 2018 or after agreement
