The Fagerholm group at the Faculty of Bio- and Environmental Sciences, University of Helsinki is seeking to recruit a POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER
The position is available from 1st September 2018 for minimum of one year with the possibility of extension.
The postdoc will participate in an Academy of Finland-funded project which investigates the molecular mechanisms by which integrins regulate immune cell programming and immune cell-mediated tumor rejection.
The Fagerholm group consists of Immunologists and Biochemists working together to understand the molecular mechanisms which regulate immune cell trafficking and function in vivo. We are especially interested in the role of integrins in immune system regulation and in immune-system related diseases such as immunodeficiency and cancer. We use a wide range of techniques such as mouse genetics, tumor models, in vivo immune cell migration and other functional assays, flow cytometry, cell biology, imaging and next generation sequencing to understand the molecular mechanisms involved in the regulation of immune cell function.

Indiana University School of Medicine, Department of Anesthesia, has a federally-funded postdoctoral position open in a cutting-edge Shock, Trauma and Neuroscience Research Laboratory that focuses on immunologic response to traumatic brain injury (TBI), trauma, and hemorrhagic shock.
The candidate will lead studies in the following areas:
1) persistent pain due to mild traumatic brain injury in adults: alterations of brain function, central sensitization, and inflammatory processes;
2) monocyte/macrophage transcriptional response to TBI in rodent models of mild TBI and polytrauma;
3) mechanisms of immune modulating therapy on the anatomic, physiologic, and transcriptional response to TBI, polytrauma, and hemorrhagic shock;
4) characterization of a model of mild TBI (concussion) for the long-term study of microglial and macrophage gene expression and response to immune modulating therapy; and
5) precision typing to determine sensitivity and tolerance of TBI and hemorrhagic shock.

Specific Responsibilities
· Process and analyze clinical blood samples derived from mild TBI patients, and assist in quantitative sensory testing of patient volunteers.
· Induce experimental traumatic brain injury alone or combined with polytrauma in rodents; harvest and process brain, muscle, bone, and viscera; perform and analyze advanced flow cytometry/cell sorting; administer, and collect and analyze RNA sequencing data.
· Supervise students and other techs working in the lab.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR IN NEUROBIOLOGY
The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent full professorship or a fixed-term associate / assistant professorship (tenure track) depending on their qualifications and career stage.
The professorship is based in the Molecular and Integrative Biosciences Research Programme, which is one of the three Research Programmes in the Faculty. Neurobiology, including electrophysiology and molecular and developmental biology of the brain, is an area of strength of the Programme. The other areas of strength of the Programme are cell and developmental biology, genetics, virology and structural biology (for further information see https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-biological-and-environmental-scien…).
The research and teaching activities at the Viikki Campus are supported by state-of-the-art infrastructures including core facilities for e.g. DNA sequencing and genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, and light- and electron microscopy including two-photon confocal and cryo-electron microscopes. Within the Research Programme, neurobiology research is supported by an in-house animal facility, and electrophysiological instrumentation is abundant in the laboratories. There are numerous research groups in the Viikki Campus that focus on e.g. molecular and developmental neurobiology, mechanisms of cell and network level activity, as well as on neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases. The Viikki Campus is one of the three centres of neuroscience research in the Helsinki area, the other two being located in the Meilahti Campus, and at the Aalto University.
The professor is expected to contribute to the advancement of neurobiology in the Molecular and Integrative Biosciences Research Programme. Demonstrated excellence and scientific leadership in the field of neurobiology is a requirement.
The main tasks of the assistant professor / associate professor / professor in neurobiology will include scientific research and research-based teaching, and participation in international collaboration.
