Solubiologian Gradu- tai harjoittelupaikka Jyväskylässä

Etsitään solubiologiasta kiinnostunutta gradutyöntekijää ja/tai harjoittelijaa
tutkimusprojektiin, jonka aiheena on HDL:n vaikutus soluhengitykseen. Projekti
toteutetaan yhteistyössä prof. Heikki Kainulaisen (Jyväskylän yliopisto, Liikuntabiologia)
ja tutkimusjohtaja Matti Jauhiaisen (Lääketieteellinen tutkimuslaitos Minerva, Helsinki)
tutkimusryhmien kanssa ja työt tehdään Jyväskylän yliopiston liikunta- ja
terveyslaboratoriossa (jäähallin ja hipposhallin välissä Hippoksella).

Projektissa pääsee tutustumaan mm. soluviljelymenetelmiin HDL:n eristykseen
verinäytteestä ultrasentrifugaatiolla sekä käsiteltyjen solujen analysointiin esim. niiden
soluhengitystä mittaamalla (high resolution respirometry).

Päävastuu työsi ohjauksesta on allekirjoittaneella, mutta myös muilta laboratoriossa
työskenteleviltä tutkijoilta saat apua ja ohjausta. Projektin avulla saat käsityksen
työskentelystä useamman projektin yhteisessä laboratoriossa, kokemusta useasta
biotieteiden alalla käytössä olevasta tutkimusmenetelmästä ja käytännön kokemuksen
tieteenteosta.

Sinulta odotetaan laboratoriossa työskentelyn perustaitoja, soluviljelykurssilla opittavia
taitoja ja kykyä itsenäiseen työskentelyyn.
Projektin voi aloittaa heti tai myöhemmin syksyllä.

We are seeking motivated Early Stage Researcher (PhD student) for our project ”Molecular and immunological basis of gamete compatibility in humans” (funded by Academy of Finland). The primary aim of the project is to clarify molecular and immunological mechanisms of female-induced sperm selection (’cryptic female choice’) in humans and find new tools for the development of next generation fertility treatments, which are better tailored to individual couples. The primary duty of hired Early Stage Researcher is to write and defend a PhD thesis according to the formulated research plan. Main tasks include (but are not limited to) sperm motility and chemotaxis measurements and determination of female-induced physiological changes in sperm. The Early Stage Researcher also has a possibility to participate in molecular and immunological analyses of sperm selection mechanisms. His/her tasks also include data analysis and reporting of the results in scientific journals.

A person to be appointed as an Early Stage Researcher shall be qualified to pursue postgraduate studies, i.e. he/she is required to have completed a suitable higher university degree or an equivalent education, which in the country in question would qualify the person for similar academic studies (UEF University Regulations, Section 31). Suitable degrees for the filled position include e.g. various biological, biomedical and medical degrees.

The applicant is expected to have good written and spoken English. Earlier experience in laboratory work, flow cytometry, other relevant methods in cell biology (e.g. sperm motility or viability analyses, ELISA assays), immunology or molecular biology (e.g. RNA seq and bioinformatics) are viewed as a benefit for the applicant. English may be used as the language of instruction and supervision in this position.

The position is filled initially for a fixed term from 1 January 2018 to 31 August 2020. Potential continuation of the position (up to 31 December 2021) will be agreed later. A probationary period is applied to all new members of the staff.

Positions of early stage researchers shall always be filled for a fixed term (UEF University Regulations, Section 31).

The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities and is based on levels 2-4 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff (euro 1,985.85 – 2,475.31/ month). In addition to the job requirement component, the salary includes a personal performance component, which may be a maximum of 46.3% of the job requirement component.

Computational biologist position is immediately available in Biomedicum Functional Genomics Unit at the University of Helsinki

Biomedicum Functional Genomics Unit (FuGU) is a core organization located in Biomedicum Helsinki with expertise in genome profiling and viral gene transfer technologies. FuGU provides academic and industrial clients access to a wide range of functional genomics services and customized solutions. The unit operates at the University of Helsinki under national Biocenter Finland infrastructure network and is one of the five nodes in the HiLIFE Genome Analysis Infrastructure.

Computational biologist position is immediately available in FuGU. The position gives you an opportunity to develop your skills in a wide range of areas of genome-wide biology and functional genomics. The position involves processing and analysis of genome-wide data generated by next-generation sequencing and different biochip platforms. Your work will mainly focus on data preprocessing and analysis as well as development of customized data analysis services including interaction with national and international customers. The position will also involve development and implementation of quality assurance standards and reporting system, participation in design of customer projects as well as management duties in development of FuGU web interface towards customers and in-house data management.

Ideal candidate has a degree in science, ideally MSc, has good programming skills, basic knowledge on statistics, background in sequence alignment and microarray data analysis and excellent team working and communication skills. Successful implementation of your tasks will require ability to work independently and in a team of scientific researchers and research assistants who will work with you in providing and developing functional genomics products and services.

Postdoctoral researcher’s position in molecular genetics (molecular mechanisms of sex-dependent dominance) at the University of Helsinki

A postdoctoral researcher’s position is available until the end of 2019 (with a further 2 year extension possible) in Professor Craig Primmer’s research group at the University of Helsinki, Finland. The position is funded by an ERC Advanced Grant entitled “Age at maturity in Atlantic salmon: molecular and ecological dissection of an adaptive trait”.

The specific role of this postdoctoral researcher will be to conduct and co-supervise research that follows up our earlier findings (see Barson et al. 2015), that aims to understand the molecular mechanisms resulting in sex-dependent dominance of the main candidate gene (vgll3), and thereby sexual conflict resolution in salmon.

An appointee to the position shall hold a doctoral degree and have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work. Suitable applicants will have a strong background in functional genomics or systems biology in any species as demonstrated by publications in relevant fields. Experience with characterization of transcription co-factor interaction partners, and/or methodologies used in lipidomics, epigenetics, transcriptomics or proteomics, is also advantageous, as is knowledge of bioinformatics, a demonstrated interest in evolutionary genomics and/or experience with fish husbandry. The ability to work as a part of a larger research team addressing related questions is also important.

Postdoctoral position to study mammary gland stem cells and their relation with breast cancers

Our laboratory studies the fate of mammary gland stem cells during development, postnatal growth, pregnancy/lactation and tumor initiation (Van Keymeulen, Nature 2011; Van Keymeulen Nature 2015; Wuidard Genes & Development 2016; Van Keymeulen Cell Reports 2017).

In this project, we will define the mechanisms that regulate multipotent cell fate in the mammary gland and how these mechanisms are hijacked during tumorigenesis.
The project is funded by the FNRS and the European Research Council (ERC).

The position will be funded for 2 years with possibility of extension.
Candidates must have a PhD degree. Previous experience with mouse genetics,
bio-imaging and molecular biology, although not essential, would be highly advantageous.
