Postdoctoral Position: Mechanisms of synaptodendritic injury in opiate abuse and HIV comorbidity
A postdoctoral position is available immediately at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine to study fundamental mechanisms underlying glial dysfunction and synaptodendritic injury in the striatum and hippocampus following drug and HIV exposure.
The candidate will utilize and integrate cellular and molecular approaches to elucidate mechanisms by which opiate abuse exacerbates glial dysfunction and synaptodendritic injury in neuro-acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (neuroAIDS). A Ph.D. and/or M.D. or equivalent is required, and experience in molecular and/or virological approaches is preferred. The candidate will join a team that utilizes multi-disciplinary cell signaling, pharmacological, immunological, neurophysiological (optogenetic), virological, and behavioral strategies to explore opiate-HIV interactions in murine (in vitro and in vivo) and human (in vitro) models. The candidate will be provided with significant training in those disciplines with which they are less familiar, as well as significant mentoring to facilitate their transition to an independent research career.

Two postdoctoral positions, funded by an NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award, are available on or after February 1, 2017 in the Pittsburgh Center for Pain Research (PCPR) at the University of Pittsburgh. The PCPR aims to recruit and train the next generation of leaders in pain research, focusing on cutting-edge theories, techniques, and research strategies. Areas of research may include, but are not limited to, basic and/or clinical investigations on the molecular and cellular changes that contribute to the development of chronic pain, analysis of CNS pain circuits, human imaging studies, pain genetics, and fundamental processes underlying pain, itch, or touch. In addition, this training program provides a clinical component to the education of postdoctoral fellows with exposure to the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain patients. Qualifications:
Applicants must have a PhD or MD/PhD degree in Neuroscience, Biology, Molecular Biology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Bioengineering, or a related field, and have demonstrated excellence in research. Previous experience in pain research is not required.

CRISPR genome editing has dramatically facilitated the generation of genetically modified mice in recent years. In a rapidly developing field, new procedures with further improvements are published nearly every day and great research activity is ongoing to increase in particular the efficiency of introducing defined changes into the genome. In close collaboration with the Brakebusch group, the Transgenic Mouse Core Facility at the University of Copenhagen was one of the first places in Europe to generate genetically modified mice by CRISPR technology and since then established it as a routine transgenic technology. To stay at the front of mouse genome editing and to establish a molecular biology service for CRISPR genome editing tools at the Transgenic Mouse Core Facility, the Brakebusch group is now announcing a 2 year postdoc position, which, if successful, could be continued.
Our research/The Group
The Brakebusch group is investigating the function of Rho GTPases and Rho GTPase effectors in vivo using genetically modified mice with CRISPR genome editing as a central technology. We have strong experience in molecular and cellular biology and the analysis of mouse phenotypes, while all transgenic technologies such as ES cell manipulation, embryo injections, and embryo transfers, are placed at the Transgenic Mouse Core Facility, headed by Cord Brakebusch.
The research project
The postdoc will test and develop molecular biology methods to improve the generation of CRISPR genome edited mice. Successful methods will then be translated into novel molecular biology services at the Transgenic Mouse Core Facility. Aim is to establish within 2 years a state-of-the-art service that will then be continued together with the technology development activities.
Start: Preferably May 2017 or after agreement
Duration: 2 years
Qualifications
We expect you to be a highly motivated and highly ambitious scientist with the following qualifications:
- A PhD in Life Sciences and preferably postdoctoral research experience
- Excellent expertise in molecular biology
- Excellent experience in CRISPR genome editing including design and preparation of constructs for homologous recombination
- High interest in developing the best CRISPR genome editing service possible
- Excellent English skills written and spoken

Terms of salary and employment
Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Academics Central organization. Currently, the monthly salary starts at 32.351 DKK/ca. 4.250 Euro plus pension. Depending on qualifications, a higher salary may be negotiated.
Non-Danish and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.
The position is covered by the “Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at the Universities” of June 28, 2013.

Learning through bacteria?
Translating beneficial bacterial science to improving child education in Ivory Coast
In childhood, cognitive capacities are essential for learning new skills and participating in formal education. Many different factors facilitate the development of a child’s cognitive capacities: from socioeconomic factors and diet, to the quality of care. In this project, the focus will be on one potentially very relevant factor that has received little attention to date: the bacteria in our intestines. Intestinal bacteria have a central role in our health, but may also modulate brain development and functioning.
The goal of the project is to develop the novel and promising field of microbiota-cognition dynamics by performing two probiotic intervention studies, in infants and in preschoolers, within the Jacobs Foundation TRECC program in Ivory Coast. We will determine whether this probiotic supplement can be linked to better cognitive functioning in the young children. The ultimate goal is to improve children’s basic conditions for learning by achieving healthy brain development in a relatively easy and affordable manner. At the same time, the intervention should improve children’s health, physical, and psychological well-being.
This project is part of Prof. Carolina de Weerth’s Jacobs Advanced Research Fellowship.
