A postdoctoral opportunity is immediately available within the Group to apply state-of-the-art molecular/cell biology and new functional genomic tools for mechanistic studies focusing on functionally important epigenetic “driver” genes (“epidrivers”) and associated molecular pathways. This also includes the development and application of in- vitro models (for example, human and mouse immortalization models), new (epi)genome editing tools, and functional genomics. We also study interactions of epidrivers with selected known and suspected carcinogens (with focus on non-genotoxic “epigenetic” agents) that may play a role in tumour initiation and progression through epigenetic mechanisms.
Candidates with a solid background in epigenetics, molecular biology, and cancer research with a good command of English are encouraged to apply. Experience in genome editing (such as CRISPR-Cas9 system), genome-wide shRNA screens and functional (epi)genomics would be an asset.
The postdoctoral opportunity is initially for one year with possibility of extension. The IARC stipend is currently €2750 per month (net of tax). The cost of travel for the post-doc, and in certain circumstances for dependants, will be met, a dependant’s allowance paid, and health insurance covered.

A PhD student position in ovarian cancer research at University of Turku
A doctoral student position is open in the ovarian cancer research group at the Department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine, Institute of Biomedicine, University of Turku, Finland. The research group focuses on translational cancer research on high-grade serous ovarian cancer.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated person to study treatment resistance mechanisms, markers for resistance prediction and drugable targets for personalized ovarian cancer treatment. Survival of the ovarian cancer patients is very poor due to typical late diagnosis and development of treatment resistance. We have recently identified a set of expression markers that predicts ovarian cancer patient survival (Chen, Huhtinen, et al 2015 Cancer Res) and identified potential mechanisms leading to platinum resistance, which works as a background for the PhD project.
This project focuses on evaluating the role of the prognostic markers in drug resistance and development of new tools for diagnosis and treatment of the patients. The work is a part of ongoing multidisciplinary research collaboration between clinical, systems biology and laboratory researchers and is connected to EU H2020 Hercules project. We use diverse and modern laboratory methods, including cell free DNA analysis, CrispR-Cas gene knockdown, Chip-Seq and next generation sequencing, as well as both clinical samples and patient derived primary cell lines. The project will be performed in the laboratory of Professor Olli Carpén at the Department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine, Institute of Biomedicine, University of Turku, Turku, Finland, under supervision of docent Kaisa Huhtinen. The position will start as soon as possiblewith 3 months trial period.

– MSc in biosciences e.g. molecular biology, biochemistry or health biosciences (already obtained or soon-to-be) or medical student at biomedical research track
– Highly motivated person with strong interest in translational cancer research
– Ability to strive for the progress of the project

Two Postdoctoral positions – Towards deciphering mechanisms of transcriptional and post-transcriptional gene regulation in eukaryotic cells
Two postdoctoral positions are available early 2017 in the laboratory of Lidia Vasiljeva funded by a Senior Research Fellowship from the Wellcome Trust at the Department of Biochemistry, University of Oxford (http://www.bioch.ox.ac.uk/ ), which is a part of the University of Oxford’s thriving scientific community. The laboratory is located in a new state-of-the-art building providing interactive environment and various research facilities.
We are looking for highly motivated candidates with an interest in gene regulation in yeast and mammalian cells. The proposed projects will utilize state-of-the-art biochemistry and structural approaches combined with the functional genome-wide analysis to understand how transcription factors and chromatin modifiers regulate transcription of protein-coding and non-coding genesis in yeast and mammalian cells. The structural study will be done as a part of existing productive collaboration with Jonathan Grimes laboratory at STRUBi (Oxford). Candidates trained in protein purification, RNA analysis, and mammalian cell culture are encouraged to apply. Basic knowledge of bioinformatics is beneficial. Applicants should have or will shortly obtain a PhD and are expected to be highly motivated, with excellent critical thinking skills and with good communication skills and have the ability to work as part of a team.

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the project entitled: pH and function of neural cells
The position is immediately available and funded for two years with salary according to public service tariffs. In the central nervous system, rapid pH shifts occur even during neuronal activity. Our current research addresses the regulatory mechanisms of neurons and astrocytes to cope with changes of extracellular pH. Work will involve molecular and functional characterization of the mechanisms accountable for regulation of several acid‐base transporters in neural cells under physiological
conditions and in response to pathologic stimuli.
The position is available from January 01, 2017 onwards. We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed candidate who holds a Ph.D. degree with strong experimental background in cell/molecular biology, or physiology. The candidate should be able to carry out independent research, as well as to collaborate in teams. Expertise in primary tissue culture, cell/molecular biological methods is required. Previous experience in working with transgenic mice is advantageous.

PhD student position at the Department of Biosciences
PhD student position is available at the Laboratory of Neurotherapeutics located at the Department of Biosciences, Division of Physiology and Neuroscience, University of Helsinki. The research group investigates the underlying neurobiological mechanisms and predictive (bio)markers of rapid-acting antidepressants using in vivo pharmacological tools, biological screenings (e.g. quantitative phosphoproteomics), pharmaco-EEG (electroencephalogram) and behavioural tests.
