in plant molecular and cell biology to study stomatal function and vascular water transport and the role of the receptor-like pseudokinase GHR1 and its novel interactors in these processes. We have shown that GHR1 is a central regulator of stomatal closure that likely acts as a scaffold that gathers together the molecular machinery that drives stomatal movements. We have identified eg. ion and water channels and signalling molecules in the GHR1 complex. This project aims to characterize the molecular networks through which GHR1 regulates stomatal function. We have also shown that GHR1 regulates water transport in the vasculature and the project additionally aims to decipher how stomatal function and regulation of water transport are connected at the molecular and whole plant level.
We are looking for a highly-motivated candidate with a doctoral degree in molecular or cell biology, plant biology, biochemistry or other relevant field. Experience in molecular plant sciences and biochemistry is considered an advantage. We seek a candidate who is able to conceive, execute, and complete research projects, think independently and creatively, and who has excellent written and verbal communication skills. The candidate should work well in a team as she/he will be integrated into an international research team of experts in plant stress biology and participate in extensive collaborations, including mobility exchanges within Europe. The project is funded by the Academy of Finland and a doctoral student is also being recruited. The background and interests of the successful candidates will determine their specific lines of research.
The starting date is 1.1.2021 but can be negotiated. The position is funded for three years with a possibility for extension. The starting salary will be ca. 3300 – 3800 euros/month, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. There will be a trial period of six months in the beginning.

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER
The Varjosalo lab has a longstanding interest in the global and comprehensive understanding of how key cellular signaling molecules; protein kinases, protein phosphatases and transcription factors mediate their signaling potential and how the signaling is changed in diseases in the immunology and oncology axis, and more recently Covid-19. For this purpose, we have developed experimental and computational methods to identify the protein-interactions formed by these signaling molecules. Additionally, we employ quantitative mass spectrometry -based proteomics to assess the protein abundance changes, as well as phosphorylation status of the tissues/cells. Furthermore, combining the data from the different sets of ‘omics’ data (proteomics, HTS and HiSeq), allows us to generate global and systems level understanding on how disease-causing mutations mediate their effects, also enabling the development of therapeutic or diagnostic approaches.
We are seeking a post doc that has extensive practical experience in standard biochemistry/molecular biology/cell biological methods, ideally encompassing proteomics and microscopic techniques and/or bioinformatics. The ideal candidate is an adaptable team-player with excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and good organizational skills.
This position will provide multiple opportunities for collaborations with potential lab visits abroad and cross-disciplinary scientific exchange, when applicable. An attitude to drive own research and work in an intra and inter team fashion is highly appreciated. The ongoing pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). COVID-19 is currently rapidly spreading worldwide to over 180 countries, including Finland. To date, no specific antiviral drugs have been developed for SARS-CoV-2. Drug discovery is hindered by the fact that viruses do not have their own metabolism, but are dependent on the host. This project is part of a consortia grant funded by the Academy of Finland, aiming to fight the ongoing pandemic of COVID-19. The project is a combination of modern technologies used to study proteomics and genomics. The candidate will apply the interaction proteomics to construct a comprehensive virus-host protein interaction network and identify the potential protein targets for testing the available drug(s) against all possible variants or mutations of SARS-COV-2. The pipeline you will set up is important not only for the SARS-COV-2 but also for many other newly emerging viruses of interest.

Dr. Harri Itkonen is setting up a new research group at the Department of Biochemistry and Developmental Biology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki, and is looking for a highly motivated doctoral student to join his team.
The group of Harri Itkonen is looking for outstanding candidates for a PhD Student trainee position to study how metabolism is integrated to regulate global gene expression. We utilize a wide range of techniques including cell biology, organoid technology, live-cell imaging, mass spectrometry, ChIP- and RNA-seq among others to study processes that cancer cells are addicted to (see eg. Itkonen and al. Mol Cancer Res 2020; Itkonen and al. Theranostics 2019; Martin and al. J Am Chem Soc. 2018). The aim of the current project is to understand how the crosstalk between RNA polymerase II modifying enzymes regulates global gene expression.
We are looking a creative thinker with strong analytical skills and high motivation to develop novel therapies to treat cancer. Our group is well connected internationally, and the hired PhD Student will have a chance to present her / his findings in international conferences, and the training includes a tentative half a year research visit to University of Oxford.

Our team includes experts in human genetics, epidemiology, and machine learning and we have recently launched the COVID19 Host Genetic Initiative (https://www.covid19hg.org/), to study the genetic determinants of COVID19 severity.
Our lab is based at FIMM and at Massachussets General Hospital/Harvard Medical School and affilitated with the Broad Institute. The candidate would be able to work periodically in both locations, if necessary. FIMM also provides excellent training opportunities for postdoctoral researchers through the FIMMPOD postdoctoral program.
Qualification and requirements: We are looking for future research leaders to work with an unprecedented amount of health information (diagnoses, medications, socio/demographic information, etc.) from millions of individuals in combination with biobank-based genetic data. The candidate will develop and pilot cutting edge approaches that leverage this data to elucidate the biological basis of disease and translate these findings into relevant public-health intervention. The successful candidate should prove a solid understanding of statistical genetics methods, including genome-wide association studies, Mendelian randomization, polygenic scores, and family-based designs. Understanding of epidemiological design and measures is considered a plus.
The candidate should hold a Ph.D. in the field of genetics, statistics, mathematics, computational sciences or genetic epidemiology. The ideal candidate shows scientific independence, has publishing experience, and an aptitude towards developing novel techniques. Together with the PI, he/she is jointly responsible for coordinating projects and supervising PhD students.
Contract & salary:. The job is for a fixed-term of 2 years with a possibility of extension for additional two years. A trial period of 6 months will be applied. The starting salary will be ca. 3300 – 3800 euros/month, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience and including a salary component based on personal performance. The position is part of an Academy of Finland’s research project that aims to do network pharmacology modeling to provide the mechanism of action of drugs and drug combinations for a systems-level understanding of cancer. The Tang group combines computational methods to offer improved efficiency methods to identify more effective cancer treatments for personalized medicine. The Tang laboratory is based at Research Program in Systems Oncology (ONCOSYS) (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/research-program-in-systems-on…) at the Meilahti biomedical campus.
Role description:
We are seeking at least one postdoctoral researcher to work on the computational methods to develop network pharmacology models for predicting drug combinations. The project is focused on strategies for predicting potential drug combination and patient subclasses by constructing multipartite networks using drug response data. The primary goal of the project is to analyse drug sensitivity datasets to exploit drug-target interaction data to explore the biological mechanism of drugs. A key aim of the work is to propose drug combination regimens focusing on patient-derived drug response data along with the providing a biochemical and biophysical understanding of a drug combination. Hematological malignances and ovarian cancer are the available datasets for this project. The post holder will be responsible for planning and conducting computational research within the project under the supervision of Dr. Mohieddin Jafari, and Prof. Jing Tang.
The ability to work well within a collaborative team is critical for this position. You will work with unique datasets derived from large-scale experiments associated with a diverse range of projects in pharmacology and molecular biology. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience based on the University guidelines. The full-time position start Jan 2021. A six-month trial period will be applied.
Key requirements:
We are seeking a creative and highly motivated individual with primary interest in network science and biomedical data mining. Candidates should have a PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, statistics, computer science or other related disciplines. The ideal candidate will have experience in at least one of the aforementioned areas, and a strong interest in the others. Previous experience with biological networks, omics datasets, and expertise in related statistics and modelling are considered an advantage. Solid skills in scripting/programming (preferably R and Python) are essential prerequisites for this position. Excellent communication and presentation skills in English, good organisational skills, troubleshooting expertise and the ability to work effectively to tight deadlines are desirable.

The position is available from October 2020 onwards, and can be started later upon agreement. It is a two-year fixed-term position, with a possibility of extension. Trial period of 6 months will be applied. The salary will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. to discover combination therapies to overcome chemotherapy resistance in ovarian cancer. We have collected one of the largest high-quality data set that consists of WGS, bulk RNA-seq, whole-genome DNA methylation, ctDNA, single-cell RNA-seq or single-cell proteomics data from >1000 samples taken from 200 patients before and after chemotherapy within pan-Europe HERCULES (https://project-hercules.eu/) project. Complete and curated clinical data offers various data mining and integration opportunities in addition to the sequencing data. Our network enables validation of computational results and as well as translation of the validated results to clinic.
We expect:
• Strong methodological expertise. For example, in fields of statistics, applied mathematics, engineering or bioinformatics.
• Demonstrated track record of research experience in relevant subject areas, such as multivariate data analysis, machine learning, or mathematical modelling.
