in which 24 doctoral student (early stage researcher) positions are now open for application. Via this call for applications, you can apply for a position in the Doctoral Programme in Molecular Medicine (http://www.uef.fi/en/web/dpmm).
The persons selected to the doctoral student positions will be hired as early stage researchers by the UEF academic departments and schools. A person to be appointed as an early stage researcher shall be qualified to pursue postgraduate studies, i.e. he or she is required to have completed a suitable higher university degree or an equivalent education abroad which in the country in question would qualify the person for similar academic studies. Positions of early stage researchers shall always be filled for a fixed term. (UEF Regulations, Section 31).
The main duty of the doctoral students is to complete their doctoral dissertation in accordance with their approved research proposal. A fluent English language proficiency is required of applicants performing their research in English.
The doctoral student positions may be applied for by persons already enrolled as doctoral students at the UEF and by persons planning to do their doctoral studies at the UEF. Persons finalizing their higher university degree may also apply (degree must be finished by 31 August), but are required to submit their degree certificate and transcript of records to the Faculty of Health Sciences by 30 September 2020.
The doctoral student positions will be filled as from 1 January 2021, or as agreed in 2021.It is possibly to apply for a doctoral student position on a full-time or a part-time basis. Part-time positions must be co-financed with another funding source (eg. a foundation or another organization) so that the total amount of funding makes it possible to on the doctoral dissertation full-time.
The maximum duration of the doctoral student position is four years. Previously granted UEF doctoral student position will be considered in the selection process. It is also possible to apply for researcher months. In addition, the total time (as full time equivalent) used for PhD studies by 1 January 2021 will be taken into account (four years is the recommended time for PhD degree studies).
The salary of the early stage researcher is based on levels 2–4 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff in the Salary System for Finnish Universities (i.e. the job requirement component amounts to €2,033.29 – 2,535.20/month). In addition to the job requirement component, the salary includes a personal performance component, which may be up to 50% of the job requirement component. The salary is determined on the basis of the phase of the doctoral dissertation and the person’s personal performance.

Eligibility
A. Higher University degree
Only persons who have completed by 31.8.2020 a suitable higher university degree or an equivalent education abroad, which in the country in question would qualify the person for similar academic studies, can be hired as early stage researchers. Only applications filling this requirement will be evaluated.
B. Full-time used for PhD studies
Four years is the recommended time for PhD degree studies. If the full time used for PhD studies by 1 January 2021 exceeds four years, applications will not be evaluated. There is a separate question concerning the used time in the electronic application form.
C. Length of the research plan
The maximum length of the research proposal is three pages. In case of exceeding three pages, only the first three pages will be evaluated.

The position is available in computational biomedicine, with a focus on teaching in the Master’s Degree Programme in Biomedicine and in the life-long learning curriculum that includes summer schools and online courses.
The appointee will primarily teach in English, and contact teaching will form approximately 25% of working time. The main role of the appointee will be to actively develop course materials and participate in the supervision of BSc, MSc and PhD theses in this field. Towards this end, the appointee will also work actively (approximately 25% working time) with the expert communities in both teaching and research to develop new skills, i) by participating in ongoing research projects carried out at the Institute of Biomedicine and the UEF Bioinformatics Centre and ii) co-managing national and international teaching networks in biomedicine.

We are now inviting applications for an Early Stage Researcher (Bioinformatics / Toxicogenomics and Machine Learning) position, School of Medicine, Institute of Biomedicine, Kuopio Campus (extended application period) A doctoral student position is available in the research group led by Assistant Professor Vittorio Fortino in the Institute of Biomedicine, School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences (UEF) in Kuopio. Applicants with a background in bioinformatics analysis of next-generation sequencing and microarray data, and data analytics are encouraged to apply. The research position is filled research oriented and it is filled in the EU H2020 project EDCMET (No 825762), which aims to develop insilico, in vitro and in vivo methods assessing the metabolic effects of endocrine disruptor chemicals (EDCs) http://www.uef.fi/en/web/edcmet. The candidate will learn how to use toxicogenomic data, gene network analysis and machine learning (ML) methods for understanding and predicting compound (or drug) toxicity. Toxicogenomics utilizes high throughput technologies to generate sufficiently large data sets that can be used to assess/study the state of a biological system after a chemical/toxicant exposure. Biological measurement of compound activity in different cell lines and organs offered by various omics data types (e.g. genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, and proteomics) is complementary to the structure-based viewpoint of compounds in drug development, and thus can be a valuable tool in assessing potential toxicity. However, the use in combination of molecular network analysis and machine learning techniques for understanding and/or predicting toxicity of compounds, and in particular drugs, has not yet been fully exploited. The candidate will develop bioinformatics pipelines to analyze transcriptomic (microarray and RNA-seq) data, to model the mechanism of action of compounds in terms of molecular networks and pathway analysis, to train and validate machine learning based methods enabling prediction of chemical toxicity for drug design. We are looking for a candidate to assist and carry out research on regulatory non-coding RNA networks in
cerebral ischemia. The work includes culturing of primary and secondary
neuronal cell lines and analysis of non-coding RNAs under different
disease-associated stimuli, manipulation of therapeutic miRNAs
(overexpression and knockouts) and functional assays of cells. The

Candidate profile:
The candidate should have a Master’s degree in cell biology, molecular
biology, biomedicine or in a relevant discipline and experience in basic
cell cultures and working in sterile conditions. In addition, the
candidate should have basic knowledge of cellular biology. Enthusiasm
and commitment will need to be coupled with attention to detail and
adherence to good laboratory techniques. Good knowledge of written
and spoken English is essential. An ideal candidate will have a high
degree of independent thought and initiative. The candidate is expected

looking for a Postdoctoral researcher to a project that will be carried
out in collaboration with a nation-wide consortium consisting of
academic groups and industrial partners. The chosen candidate will be
based in the group of Professor Tarja Malm (https://www.uef.fi/en/web/aivi/tarja-malm-group/).
The
aim of the project is to characterize in depth the molecular networks
mediated by non-coding RNAs carried by extracellular vesicles as well as
to study hypoxia targeting moieties of these vesicles. The work
includes transcriptomic and proteomic analyses coupled with modern
molecular biology methods, such as CRISPR, viral vectors, RNA mimics,
etc.

Candidate profile:
The candidate should have a PhD in molecular biology, cell biology,
biochemistry or in a closely related field. Previous experience in
non-coding RNA research and modern molecular biology technologies such
as EV isolation methods (e.g. size exclusion chromatography), flow
cytometry analysis of EVs and/or RNA, next-generation sequencing methods
and mass spectroscopy are highly valued. Additional skills in
bioinformatics will be considered an asset. Ambitious and self-driven
attitude is also expected as well as ability to supervise post-graduate
students.
Good
knowledge of written and spoken English is essential. The candidate is
expected to have a letter of recommendation from two previous and recent
supervisors / PIs.
The
position is filled for a two-year fixed-term period from 1 April 2020
or as agreed. The position is filled for a fixed-term due to it
pertaining to a specific project.
The
salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary
system of Finnish universities and is based on level 5 of the job
requirement level chart for teaching and research staff (€2,935.55/

headed by Professor Taina Pihlajaniemi and Adjunct Professor Valerio
Izzi in the Extracellular Matrix & Hypoxia Research Unit, operating

Our research project focuses in the interplay between acute myeloid
leukemia (AML) and osteoblasts, especially in the context of
extracellular matrix and intercellular communications, and its potential
to unravel new therapeutic targets. We use bioinformatics, biochemical
and cell biological methods, and genetic mouse models to understand how
the relationships between AML and osteoblasts shape drug sensitivity and
resistance, and how bidirectional communication networks are
established. Furthermore, we have access to patient-derived material to
evaluate our findings in a pre-clinical context. We offer a research
environment with excellent technological facilities and a motivating and
supporting community. This project is part of a larger consortium (the
ELMI consortium, http://www.oulu.fi/fbmm/node/196382)
by which we can offer successful candidates access to state-of-the-art
facilities to perform collaborative experiments outside Oulu when

Requirements
The successful candidate must possess a Ph.D. degree in the field of
biochemistry, molecular or cell biology, medical science or related
fields. Prior experience in cancer research, cell culture and cell-based
experiments is required and proficiency in molecular biology and
microscopy is expected. Prior knowledge of the research field is
considered an advantage. Good communication and teamwork skills are
appreciated. Fluency in both written and spoken English is required and
candidates with publication experience will be preferred. Most
importantly, we expect the candidate to have a high motivation to
conduct high-level biomedical research.
Salary
The salary for the Post-doctoral researcher will be based on level 5
of the national salary scale for the teaching and research staff of
Finnish universities, which with the supplementary remuneration for an
early-stage post doc is usually between 3400 and 3800 € per month,
depending on the appointee’s qualifications and prior experience.
