Doctoral Student / Research Assistant in mitochondrial biology and signalling
for a fixed-term
The focus of the lab is to unravel fundamental signalling pathways and mechanisms controlling mitochondrial function. We are particularly interested in how mitochondria adapt signalling to metabolic cues in models of dysfunction including primary mitochondrial patient cell lines, cancer and associated disorders. We aim to exploit this knowledge on basic principles of mitochondrial signalling and subsequent metabolic susceptibilities in cellular models to help devise novel treatments of diseases that stem from misregulated mitochondrial function.
In this role the candidate will have the unique opportunity to drive an exciting project addressing limiting metabolic pathways in models of mitochondrial dysfunction by genome-wide CRISPR screening and mitochondrial structural analysis. The successful candidate will have access to a wide range of methodologies with work consisting in preparation of cell models, construction of libraries, and analysis of metabolic, proteomic and microscopic data at the cellular level.
We are looking for a highly motivated independent researcher with prime analytical skills driven by a passion for science. We expect you to formulate your own hypotheses, propose experimental design to address them, and take advantage of the laboratory and research community’s intellectual and skill resources to advance the knowledge of the field. The appointee is expected to publish in top-level international peer reviewed scientific journals. In addition, she/he is also expected to potentially take part on the other research tasks such as ones related to ongoing studies and preparation of grant applications. The specific responsibilities will vary according to the level of expertise of the candidate.
The ideal candidate has an extensive background in standard molecular cell biological methods, ideally encompassing genetic and microscopic techniques and/or bioinformatics (NGS data). Expertise in biochemistry and molecular biology is a pre-requisite for this position. Additional expertise for research projects involving human subjects, primary cell culture would be highly desirable. The ideal candidate is an adaptable team-player and has excellent communication and organizational skills and a strong command in written and spoken English and should be familiar with the constraints related to translational research.
This position will provide multiple opportunities for collaborations with potential lab visits abroad and cross-disciplinary scientific exchange, where the candidate will receive extensive training in cutting-edge technology. An aptitude to drive and maintain intra and inter team collaborations will be highly appreciated. We are seeking a motivated Postdoctoral/Project Researcher for our project “Towards molecular-level understanding of fertilization and sexual selection” (funded by the Academy of Finland, more information from research: https://gamcomgroup.wordpress.com/).
Fertilization is one of the most complex and enigmatic biological processes, which severely hinders our understanding about reproduction, evolution and beginning of life. It has traditionally been assumed that fertilization is a completely unbiased process, leading to random fusion of gametes. Against this assumption, our recent findings have indicated that gametes often combine non-randomly, which bias fertilization towards particular (compatible) reproductive partners (see: http://dx.doi.org/10.1098/rspb.2018.0836 and http://dx.doi.org/10.1098/rspb.2020.1682). However, the molecular-level mechanisms of this gamete-level sexual selection (cryptic female choice) have remained unclear. The primary aim of our research is to clarify these mechanisms in humans and this way also gain better understanding of the mechanistic basis of fertilization and infertility.
The Postdoctoral/Project Researcher will participate in experimental research that aims to clarify these mechanisms in humans. Depending on the expertise of the researcher, the duties can include either:
1) Molecular and/or immunological analyses (e.g. RNA sequencing, human leucocyte antigen analyses, and mass spectrometry of reproductive proteins), 2) sperm motility and chemotaxis measurements, or 3) determination of female-induced physiological changes in sperm. The researcher’s tasks also include data analysis and reporting of the results in scientific journals.
The applicant is expected to have good skills in written and spoken English. Earlier experience in laboratory work, relevant methods in molecular biology (e.g. RNA seq, other next-generation sequencing methods or proteomics) and cell biology (e.g. sperm motility or viability analyses, ELISA assays or flow cytometry) will be considered a benefit for the applicant. The research position is filled into the Academy of Finland research project (No 332510) which aims to use Artificial Intelligence methods to efficiently mine big biomedical data and quickly assess multivariate biomarker hypotheses formulated from multiple biomedical data sources, including biological knowledge networks, larger-scale genomics and clinical data. The post-doc employed will address two major unsolved problems in precision medicine: (i) the integration of biological knowledge, clinical and multi-omics data in a systems biology framework to characterize disease-relevant mechanisms and (ii) a multi-parameter optimization strategy to identify multivariate biomarkers panel based on their predictive performance, functional relevance and clinical utility. These AI-driven technologies will be used to discover highly predictive biomarkers of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and Alzheimer disease (AD).
The post-doc employed will have a central role in developing and applying approaches for the processing and analysis of omics data as well as machine learning within this project.

Our ideal candidate has:
- Ph.D. in Genetics or Clinical Laboratory Geneticist degree in Clinical Molecular Genetics / Laboratory Genetics and Genomics.
- Excellent understanding of human genetics, inheritance models and inherited human diseases and ability to understand medical terminology and learn clinical aspects of the diseases.
- Knowledge of current genomic information and variant databases, in addition to experience in NGS methods.
- Uncompromised attention to detail. In practice this means analytical, critical and systemic approach, as well as ability to follow rules is needed to maintain coherent variant classifications throughout the team and high quality of the reports.
- Experience in interpreting and reporting genetic test results in a clinical setting utilizing NGS, Sanger sequencing and other methods is an asset, but similar research experience is valued as well.
- Excellent verbal and written skills in English are a necessity.

We are now inviting applications for an Early Stage Researcher (Biomedical MRI) position, A.I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences, Kuopio Campus The researcher will work in a project, where hyperpolarised metabolic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques at high and low magnetic fields will be used to study cerebral ischaemia (stroke), the cause of 10% of annual deaths worldwide. Metabolic information obtained with hyperpolarisation MR techniques is optimal for stroke imaging because it reports on fast catabolic processes disturbed in stroke (e.g. lactate formation and acidosis). These questions will be investigated in four interleaved work packages, in which the necessary preclinical techniques for high and low magnetic field imaging of stroke will be explored using a range of hyperpolarised metabolic (e.g. pyruvate, glucose) and perfusion markers. Furthermore, the project will aim to deepen the understanding of hyperpolarised signal kinetics in the brain. The project is expected to result in novel tools for high and low magnetic field metabolic imaging of stroke, which will complementexisting techniques such as CT and FDG-PET. Techniques are applicable to other neurodiseases with perturbed metabolism, such as traumatic brain injury, as well as cancer research.
The researher will work in a group led by Research Director Mikko Kettunen. The group focuses on developing new metabolic MRI techniques using hyperpolarised markers, and the project forms a part of the researcher’s PhD thesis.
A person to be appointed as an early stage researcher shall be qualified to pursue postgraduate studies, i.e. he or she is required to have completed a suitable higher university degree or an equivalent education abroad which in the country in question would qualify the person for similar academic studies. Positions of early stage researchers shall always be filled for a fixed term (UEF University Regulations, Section 31).
The person to be appointed to the position is required to hold a higher university degree in suitable field (including but not limited to biochemistry, physics, engineering). Previous experience in animal experiments or MR research is preferable but not essential. Good knowledge of written and spoken English is required.
The position is filled for a fixed-term period of one year from 1.9.2020 to 31.8.2021. The starting date of the position can be agreed, but the selected person must start at latest on 1.11.2020. The position is filled for a fixed-term due to it pertaining to a specific project.

A position for a motivated early stage or postdoctoral researcher is available in the Academy of Finland funded project “Transcriptional regulatory mechanisms of anti-inflammatory glucocorticoid signaling“ led by University Researcher Einari Niskanen (PhD, Docent) at the Institute of Biomedicine (School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Kuopio campus).
The project explores the molecular mechanisms of glucocorticoid signaling. The focus is on chromatin events that lead to transcriptional repression of inflammatory genes in macrophages. The project utilizes state-of-the-art mass spectrometry and genome-wide techniques in a tight association with modeling of transcriptional regulation. A researcher selected for this position will be using various bioinformatics approaches to model the transcriptional regulation in glucocorticoid and inflammatory signaling.
A person to be appointed as an early stage researcher shall be qualified to pursue postgraduate studies, i.e. he or she is required to have completed a suitable higher university degree or an equivalent education abroad which in the country in question would qualify the person for similar academic studies. Positions of early stage researchers shall always be filled for a fixed term (UEF University Regulations, Section 31).
Successful early stage researcher applicant has i) a MSc degree (or nearly completed) in bioinformatics, biomedicine, cell biology, or equivalent suitable field, ii) strong interest to science and commitment to completion of a doctoral degree, and iii) curiosity towards developing one’s bioinformatics skills. Prior experience (courses, MSc thesis project, work practice) on bioinformatics (e.g. analysis of genome-wide data) and programming are considered an advantage.
A person to be appointed as a postdoctoral researcher shall hold a suitable doctoral degree. Positions of postdoctoral researchers shall always be filled for a fixed term (UEF University Regulations, Section 31).
The person to be appointed to the Postdoctoral Researcher Position is required to hold a doctoral degree, which may not have been completed more than five years ago at the time of accepting the position. In this context, the 5 years refer to a net period of time, which does not include maternity leaves, parental leaves, or military service, etc.
Successful postdoctoral applicant has a doctoral degree (or nearly completed) in bioinformatics, computer sciences or equivalent suitable field, and a suitable track record of bioinformatics projects. Prior experience with next-generation sequencing data analysis, transcriptional regulation projects and machine learning applications are considered an advantage.
Good command of the English language is required.
