KCT is seeking now for two enthusiastic and highly motivated (senior)
scientists to join 2-year fixed term research projects. Minimal
requirement is master degree in appropriate subject. The candidates will
contribute to the projects experimentally and scientifically. They
should have excellent written and oral English language skills for
internal and scientific reporting as well the ability to work in a team
oriented environment. The scientists will also participate in strategic
discussions, national and international collaborations and coordinate
project activities.
The first project is focusing on cardiovascular diseases. The second
project aims to resolve some of the remaining challenges in viral gene
delivery including controlled transgene expression. The candidates
should have experience in virology, molecular and cell biology as well
as recombinant DNA techniques. Background on viral-mediated gene
delivery¸ cardiovascular diseases, especially in atherosclerosis, and
gene therapy is preferred.

The
Marie-Sklodowska-Curie European Training Network Magicbullet-Reloaded
will develop and employ approaches for selective, targeted delivery of a
panel of anticancer drugs for directed tumor therapy. The ETN will
recruit 15 highly talented early stage researchers
(ESR) who will be involved in all stages of drug development, ranging
from Synthetic Chemistry over Medicinal Chemistry to Tumor Biology and
Assay Development in a highly cross-linked, inter-sectoral research
network between academia and industry. This network
warrants cutting-edge interdisciplinary education, supplemented by a
well-balanced and tailor-made training in transferable soft skills,
directly focussed on the demands and needs of each individual
researcher.
An
exciting opportunity has been created for a Senior Postdoctoral
Scientist to join the interdisciplinary research programme studying
Parkinson’s disease and related synucleinopathies in the Nuffield
Department of Clinical Neurosciences led by Associate Professor
Laura Parkkinen. The group focuses on elucidating biochemical and
genetic signatures in human brain and biosamples to assist with
understanding disease pathogenesis but also to provide diagnostic
biomarkers for Parkinson’s disease and dementia. These are much
needed to improve early diagnosis of PD and assessing the efficacy of
disease-modifying therapies in a biologically-targeted manner.
The
postholder will elucidate biochemical and genetic signatures in human
brain and biosamples to assist with understanding disease pathogenesis
but also to develop biomarkers
for Parkinson’s disease and dementia. They will also develop
alpha-synuclein seeding assay (RT-QulC) as an early predictive
biomarker, monitoring disease progression and stratifying between
different synucleinopathies and examine their toxicity and infectivity
in vitro.
The
postholder must hold a PhD in molecular neurosciences or in a field
directly relevant to translational neuroscience. They must have
substantial experience in protein chemistry,
cell culture, molecular genetics and neuropathology. Previously
demonstrated research acumen, a track record of successful
publication(s) and clear potential for future success is vital.
The
postholder is also expected to possess excellent skills in scientific
communication, both orally and in writing are expected and have a strong
drive to pursuing a career
in academia. Previous experience of working with human brain and
peripheral samples is highly desirable, including familiarity with basic
neuroanatomical concepts.

We are seeking a highly motivated person with an
engineering/computation/physics background interested in working in a
multidisciplinary project. The work will involve applying new and
advanced image processing methods to analyse 3D electron microscopy
datasets of the brain. The ultimate goal will be modelling and
simulation of the obtained data to diffusion magnetic resonance imaging
(dMRI) in order to correlate imaging information to tissue
ultrastructure. The research work will be conducted at the A. I.
Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences. The candidate will be
supervised by Research Director Alejandra Sierra López in collaboration
with Associate Professor Jussi Tohka’s research groups. The ideal
candidate has experience and/or studies in signal processing, image
processing or machine learning. Prior experience in medical or
biological imaging is a plus but not required. The candidate is required
to be proficient in English and have programming experience in Matlab
and/or Python.

cellular functions using two-photon imaging and electrophysiology. You

The Cardiovascular Genomics
Laboratory at the Faculty of Health Sciences, A.I. Virtanen Institute
for Molecular Sciences, Kuopio, has an exciting opportunity for a PhD
student in the field of Cardiovascular Biology and Molecular Genomics.
The overall goal of the lab is to gain molecular level understanding of
mechanisms that underlie the development metabolic disorders such as
coronary artery disease. We employ a wide-array of next-generation
sequencing methods (scRNA-Seq, GRO-Seq, TRAPSeq, bulk RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq)
to study disease-associated gene regulatory mechanisms in cellular
(primary human cells) and mouse models of disease. During the PhD
project, the researcher will develop wetlab (e.g. cell culture, qPCR,
(sc)RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq, CRISPR-screening, functional cell culture assays,
immunohistochemistry, etc.) and computational skills (e.g. analysis of
high-throughput sequencing data), providing the candidate an excellent
skillset for a future interdisciplinary career either in academia or
industry.
A person to be appointed as an early stage researcher
shall be qualified to pursue postgraduate studies, i.e. he or she is
required to have completed a suitable higher university degree or an
equivalent education abroad which in the country in question would
qualify the person for similar academic studies. Positions of early

We are looking for a highly
motivated, enthusiastic and efficient researcher with an MSc in a
relevant discipline and solid understanding of genetics and molecular
