The group of Henri Huttunen and Riikka-Liisa Uronen is seeking a motivated postdoctoral researcher for an Alzheimer’s disease project at the University of Helsinki Neuroscience Center,
located in Biomedicum. Our lab specializes in cellular and molecular mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease, developing new technologies to understand these processes.

Project and responsibilities
This Academy of Finland funded project involves studying the role of ER-mitochondria contacts in Alzheimer’s disease. You will study the cell biological consequences of Alzheimer’s disease in both primary neuron cultures, as well as cultured cell lines. You will perform imaging and molecular biology analysis of the cells. You will also supervise Master’s/ PhD students, prepare and publish scientific manuscripts and write grant applications.
Qualifications
A successful candidate holds a PhD in life sciences. Experience and qualification in working with cell cultures is obligatory. In addition, experience in imaging and biochemistry are essential.
Knowledge on neuroscience and neurodegenerative diseases will be advantageous.
Salary will be based on the Universities salary scheme for teaching and research personnel.
A successful candidate is expected to start February 2019, or according to agreement.

We are now seeking applications from highly committed, motivated and talented postdoctoral researchers to join the phage research team at Northumbria University for a fixed term, 24 months project in collaboration with clinicians at the Great Northern Children’s hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne. This Action Medical Research funded project will characterise the intestinal virome of preterm, low-birthweight infants to determine bacteriophage groups that are present in the early gut flora in neonates.
The successful candidate will join a supportive grouping of bacteriophage biologists, virologist and microbial ecologists using novel culture-dependant and independent approaches to study bacteriophages in this in this low diversity microbial setting. The candidate should have an in-depth knowledge of bacteriophage biology/ecology with experience in handling bacteriophages in the laboratory. The candidate importantly requires previous experience in processing and analysing shotgun metagenomics data. The ability to work in a command line environment and pipeline data would be a distinct advantage.

The Epithelial morphogenesis group (http://www.biocenter.helsinki.fi/bi/mikkola/) led by Research director Marja Mikkola is inviting applications for a PhD student positions in Cell and Developmental biology. The full-time position will start in January 2019, or later by agreement.
Our laboratory, funded by the Academy of Finland, Sigrid Jusélius Foundation, Cancer Foundation Finland, and HiLIFE, uses mammary gland and hair follicle as models to uncover the principles of epithelial morphogenesis in development and disease. We use a wide range of molecular, cellular, and imaging techniques, as well as ex vivo and in vivo manipulation of developing mouse organs. The PhD project will focus on cell fate specification and cellular mechanisms governing early hair follicle morphogenesis and is tightly linked to our single cell transcriptomics project aiming to uncover cellular heterogeneity in the embryonic skin, a collaborative Center of Excellence project.
We are seeking for dedicated and enthusiastic candidates with a Master’s degree in cell/molecular biology, developmental biology, genetics, biomedicine, or other appropriate field. Candidates who will receive their MSc degree in near future are also eligible to apply. Previous experience in confocal imaging and image analysis, quantitative gene expression analysis, or cell and tissue culture is considered advantageous. Good written and oral skills in English and a team spirit are a necessity.

Suomen Akatemia rahoittaa korkealaatuista tieteellistä tutkimusta, toimii tieteen ja tiedepolitiikan asiantuntijana sekä vahvistaa tieteen ja tutkimustyön asemaa. Pyrimme toiminnassamme siihen, että suomalainen tutkimus uusiutuu, monipuolistuu ja kansainvälistyy. Katamme kaikki tieteen ja tutkimuksen alat. Vuonna 2018 rahoitamme tutkimusta 444 miljoonalla eurolla. Tutkimusrahoituksellamme rahoitetaan vuosittain 2700 henkilötyövuotta yliopistoissa ja tutkimuslaitoksissa. Akatemia toimii opetus- ja kulttuuriministeriön hallinnonalalla. Akatemian hallintovirastossa työskentelee noin 140 henkilöä.
